Having noted a very special connection to this project, Fred has assured us that it will be completed on his birthday, as scheduled. There is a tremendous amount of enthusiasm and energy surrounding our progress and what needs to be accomplished this year. Still, favorable patient experiences must remain at the forefront of providing quality healthcare. Starting in January, Lou Heimbach, Chairman of the Board, and I have been making patient rounds. Expectation: Excellence Priority: QualityStar Of The Year 2010 Barbara Place-Moreau

Barbara Place-Moreau, a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) on Tower 5 at the Horton Campus, has been named Orange Regional’s 2010 Star of the Year.

Barbara is a 29-year nursing professional who

began working for Horton Hospital 17 years ago. Throughout her career, she has made quality patient care her number one priority, exemplifying Orange Regional’s mission to improve the health of our community by providing exceptional healthcare. Barbara often goes above and beyond in many ways on a daily basis. However, delivering quality clinical care is not all Barbara provides to her patients. She realizes patients feel better when they are comfortable with their appearance. A patient’s overall well-being helps to further promote healing and recovery, ultimately providing overall patient satisfaction. That’s why Barbara has gone the extra step to help some patients look their best by providing makeovers during their stay. Donating jewelry, a curling iron and make-up, as well as her time to assist in a makeover, truly touched one patient prior to her discharge. For these reasons, Barbara was selected as Orange Regional Medical Center’s 2010 Shooting Star.

“Barbara is an excellent and seasoned nurse who goes above and beyond always,” said Tower 5 Nursing Director, Ann Diagostino. “She regularly visits her past patients who have been discharged to adult or nursing homes; going as far as bringing them gifts and their favorite food.”

Barbara takes the initiative to solve problems and always strives for success at Orange Regional. She should be commended for her commitment to excellence and dedication to her patients.

Orange Regional Medical Center and Catskill Regional Medical Center are members of the Greater Hudson Valley Health System (GHVHS). This year, we are integrating the corporate departments into

the GHVHS structure including Finance, Human Resources, Quality, Planning and Marketing, IT, Legal, Corporate Compliance and Real Estate and Audit. The purpose of combining the corporate departments is to save money on overhead expenses and standardize work at both organizations. We continue to work closer and more efficiently as one system. This is good for both organizations; strengthening each hospital individually.

Implementation and training for the successful launch of the EPIC Electronic Health Record System is in full swing as we prepare to “go live” in late March. The training program is going very well and I’m very impressed by the enthusiasm of our nurses and physicians. A special thank you to the IT and education staff for their dedication and hard work. There are many benefits to the EPIC system. One huge improvement will be in the ordering of medications. With physicians ordering prescriptions directly to the pharmacy, hours of time will be saved and the opportunity for errors greatly reduced. This is a key benefit of the EPIC system and will improve the

timeliness and safety of medications delivered to our patients.

An extraordinary focus of ours in 2011 will be delivering the new hospital on time and within budget. We’ll continue to monitor costs, keep a close eye on the construction schedule and execute move plans to coincide with a seamless transition for our patients. I recently met with Fred Kummer, President and CEO of HBE, our design-build firm. Coincidentally, Fred was born at Horton Hospital and will celebrate his 82nd birthday on April 23, 2011: the same day we are scheduled to complete construction.

We have interviewed patients at both the Horton and Arden Hill Campuses and have received very favorable feedback from patients and family members. Thank you for all you do in taking great care of our patients every single day.

Connections February 2011

My father, Leo Grippe, was a patient at the Arden Hill Campus from June 17 through June 28, 2010. He suffered six disabling strokes. There were two very outstanding employees I wish to extend my deepest appreciation to. They are Mary Petak, RN, and Pedro Oyola from the Environmental Services Department. Many nurses crossed paths with my father during his stay, but Mary went above and beyond with all of her patients. She showed genuine concern for them. She did not just think of it as a job, but showed compassion. Mary is a very hard worker and made my father’s stay much more comfortable. Pedro, from Environmental Services, was a bright part of every day. He would be cleaning the room and would always catch our conversation and quickly turn it into stand-up comedy. This was great as my dad has lost his ability to speak, but he sure did laugh. When they say laughter is the best medicine, they’re not kidding. My father looked forward to Pedro’s visit daily. If not for these wonderful people, my father’s outcome would not have been so great. May God bless them both. Please make sure that both Mary and Pedro receive a copy of this letter. Sincerely, David M. Grippe Crossville, TN

Orange Regional: A Culture Of CaringPatient’s Son Thankful For Caring Staff At The Arden Hill Campus

Below is a letter from a patient’s son who was impressed with the care his father received at the Arden Hill Campus. In the letter, he recognizes the compassion and engagement of two staff members that led to his father’s positive outcome.

Nurse Of Distinction Committee Nominates Semi-Finalists Each year as a part of an 1199SEIU joint labor management project, nurses are selected to represent their organizations at a gala historically held in New York City. The ceremony is attended by nurses and their leaders. This event is often referred to as the “Academy Awards for Nurses”.During the event, all 1199SEIU semi-finalists are honored with a red carpet ceremony and one winner is announced in each category: nurse leader; preceptor; novice and nurse of distinction. The winners of these categories represent the pinnacle of nursing in New York State.Orange Regional’s Nurse of Distinction Committee has selected its nominees to represent the hospital as semi-finalists at the ceremony on May 18, 2011. These nurses were nominated by peers and management in acknowledgement of their skills and dedication to their profession; patients; co-workers and our medical center. As part of our new hospital relocation planning, the proposal process for firms that are bidding to assist Orange Regional with moving files, furnishings and some medical equipment from our Arden and Horton Campuses to the new hospital was conducted on January 19, 2011. In order to provide us with the most accurate bid for the work, several bidders walked through the buildings to assess the size and scope of the relocation. Inpatient Rehabilitation Department Receives A ‘Thank You’ Celebration

On January 28, 2011, Ed Epstein, a 10-year post-stroke survivor, thanked inpatient rehabilitation staff at the Horton Campus for their talent and dedication to helping stroke patients regain their quality of life. As a past patient of the Inpatient Rehabilitation Department, he credits the staff with his recovery after his stroke. Ed especially thanked the rehabilitation unit’s Doctor of Physical Therapy, Lucy Ricardo-Torres, who was his lead therapist during recovery. “Without her compassion and attention I wouldn’t be standing here today,” said Ed. Four years ago, Ed began volunteering his time on the rehabilitation unit, working with the patients. Eight years ago, he initiated Orange Regional’s Stroke Education and Support Group, which he continues to co-facilitate today. For more information on inpatient rehabilitation services, please call 342-7120.

Pet Project: Helping Animals In Need

At Orange Regional, employees frequently demonstrate the capacity to serve, volunteer and give back both inside and outside the walls of our organization. Whether it’s by participating in a charity walk, volunteering within the community, sending packages to soldiers or monetary contributions in support of a good cause, our hospital family is incredibly generous.

A perfect example of this was the overwhelming employee response to Employee Health’s Annual Animal Food Drive. Our employees realize how important pets are to people and families, providing unconditional love and at times helping patient recovery from life changing health conditions. Understanding that shelters care for “man’s future best friend”, Orange Regional collected $50 which enabled the Employee Health Department to provide more than 250 items to two local animal shelters in dire need. Thank you for your amazing generosity!

Angel Beebe, ANP, of Employee Health, stands with Tessa to display the impact of Orange Regional’s amazing generosity to animals in need.

Transitioning To The New Hospital - Facilities Management

With each passing day we move a little closer to our relocation and occupancy of our new hospital. To support this

transition from construction to operations, the Facilities Management team began a daily working schedule at the new

hospital campus. There are a multitude of operational-based inspections, risk assessments and new building systems

calibrations and training that must be completed within a precise timeframe.

During this transition, Administrator of Facilities Management, Joseph Glaski, will be predominantly working at the new

hospital, and the day to day Arden Hill and Horton Facilities Management functions will be overseen by John King.

Several days each month, Facilities Management leadership and staff will be carrying out their work in the new hospital.

Availability at the Arden Hill and Horton Campuses will be limited. You can support this transition by limiting work requests

to urgent repairs and items impacting our patient’s experience or environment of care. For more information, please

contact Joseph Glaski at 342-7611 or [email protected].

For a minute, think about an inpatient waiting to go for a test, an Emergency Department patient waiting to see

a physician or an outpatient waiting for a test result. To them, 15 minutes can feel like an hour or more. During

patients’ wait time, they are nervous, anxious and vulnerable; they are in an unfamiliar place where complex terms

and words are often spoken. In an effort to enhance our patients’ experiences, we must always remember that good

communication helps them understand what they’ve been through and what to expect next. It also shows them that

staff has not forgotten them. Frequent, proactive communication improves both the quality of patient care and the

manner in which patients perceive their care. Please remember to communicate with our patients and visitors often.

For more information on improving the patient experience, please contact Administrator of Quality and Support

Services, Susan O’Boyle, at 342-7381 or [email protected].

Good Communication Helps Patients Understand

A two-day training program has been created to assist employees in preventing and

managing crisis situations during a code gray. The program covers topics such as

de-escalation of volatile situations, reduction of the need for direct physical contact

with individuals who are acting out and reduction of the use of restraint. If you are

interested, register through the Employee Online Learning System (Swank) located on

Orange Regional’s intranet. For more information, contact Lead Workers’ Compensation
