Medical tourism is growing world wide and the traditional model of care (bounded by geographical boundaries) is not applicable anymore
Advanced technology is available at lower cost in countries like India, Thailand
Quality of care is at international standards in some of the overseas hospitals
Consumers cannot afford the high cost of treatment (out-of-pocket cost)
Waiting time is unacceptable to the consumers as it impacts their quality of life
Some treatment are unavailable in Australia, for example surrogacy
Medical tourism is an unregulated industry in its current state
Healthcare is becoming increasing expensive and appears unsustainable in its current delivery (AIHW, Productivity commission)
Individual out-of-pocket costs have increased over time (AIHW)
3
Change is imminent…..Globalisation is changing the way medicine is practiced today but the principles in medicine remain the same wherever best practices is
followed.

As a society & from health system perspective, we have to make a

- or doing nothing and having an ad hoc approach to the increasing trend of
medical tourism. .
A case for reflective improvement....
