It’s history that usually draws visitors to Rajasthan. But now its glorious heritage will also become a setting for some cutting-edge contemporary art. The 18-century Nahar-garh Fort will host the country’s first sculpture park, showcasing works of noted Indian and international artists.Set to open on December 10, the initiative is part of a Rajasthan government’s effort to put the state on the global culture map. It has partnered with Saat Saath Arts, a non-profit foundation headed by Aparajita Jain, and corporate sponsors to transform Madhavendra Palace inside Nahargarh into an art gallery.

Delhi-based Peter Nagy, who is curating the exhibition, has put together a formidable list of artists which includes Subodh Gupta, Jitish Kallat, Thukral & Tagra, and Bharti Kher. As the palace is divided into various apartments - identical ones for the queens - Nagy said he had selected some artists who worked with everyday domestic objects. For instance, Jitish Kallat’s Annexation, which is an oversized kerosene stove, is one of the works that will be part of the year-long show.Malvika Singh, full-time member of the chief minister’s Advisory Council (CMAC), called the park a “unique experiment” aimed at drawing more travellers to Rajasthan. Jaipur is already an important fixture on the festival circuit as it hosts an annual lite-rature festival and several musical events. Now, it’s trying to woo art visitors as well.

Titled ‘Housing the body, Housing the soul’, the exhibition at Kalakriti Art Gallery indeed houses the bewitching variety and intricacies of artistic expres-sions.With artworks of Vinita Karim, Aami Atmaja, Nandini Vallimuthiyal, Chitra Ganesh, Kim Seola, GR Iranna, Sujith SN, Prathap Modi, Thukral & Tagra, A Rajeswara Rao and Bose Krishnamachari, the assortment is as diverse as it can get.However, the binding element is the richness in terms of colour, that not only lures viewers but also manages to draw their attention to the essence of the paintings, subsequently triggering a thought process.While Vinita Karim’s works serve as snippets of her travel diaries, tracing cityscapes and nature’s wonders, Nandini Vallimuthiyal’s performative pho-tographs place the Indian God in modern contexts, thereby lending a certain quirkiness to the work.South Korean artist Kim Seola deconstructs his subjects and invites the viewers’ attention to the underlying implications. Aami Atmaja, on the other hand, challenges rules binding artistic expressions and chooses to work at the will of her creative spurs.Thukral & Tagra’s collaborative works serve as a humorous as well as thou-ght-provoking reflection on today’s world, sticking by the Indian identity.‘Housing the body, Housing the soul’ will be on display till October 30, from 11 am to 7 pm.

Preparations are on in full-swing for the fourth edition of Kochi-Muziris Biennale (KMB). We hear that the upcoming edition’s curator, Anita Dube, has been busy travel-ling, cherry-picking artists for the 2018 edition. While the curator goes about her job, over here in Mumbai, the Kochi Biennale Foundation (KBF) and auction house Saffro-nart will host a fundraiser with 41 works — an exciting mix of photographs, paintings and sculptures — all donated by leading artists such as Gauri Gill, Bharti Kher, Thukral and Tagra, and Himmat Shah. These works, some of which were shown earlier at KMB, will go under the hammer on October 31. This will be the second such fundraiser art auction by KBF in collaboration with Saffronart. With no buyer’s premium on the auction, the net proceeds will go towards supporting the KBF’s resources. Manju Sara Rajan, the CEO of the KBF, says that it’s great to see the art community helping its own. “The Biennale was founded by artists and has always had artist-curators, so our art patrons coming together shows how important this festival is for the community,” she said. Rajan also added that while the festival itself gets donations, this fundraiser is the only occasion when the foundation gets revenue, a big push to gather together their resources.

Saffronart and the Kochi Biennale Foundation (KBF) will hold a fundraiser auction on October 31 in support of the Kochi Muziris Biennale. The KBF is a non profit charitable trust engaged in promoting art and culture and educational activities in India. Saffro-nart, founded in 2000 by Minal and Dinesh Vazirani, has hosted almost 100 auctions.Featuring artworks by more than 40 leading modern and contemporary artists, the net proceeds from the auction will benefit the efforts of the Kochi Muziris Biennale, which showcases leading talent from India and around the world.Most artworks on offer have no reserve price, and there will be no buyer’s premium on any of the lots.Among the lots on offer are works by Amrita Sher Gil, Subodh Gupta, Bharti Kher, Manisha Parekh, Varunika Saraf, Vivan Sundaram, Thukral and Tagra, Atul Dodiya, G R Iranna, B Manjunath Kamath, Parvathi Nayar, Bharat Sikka, Pushpamala N, and international artist Francesco Clemente. Some of the artworks have been donated by the artists themselves, making them patrons of the Biennale. Most artists have been represented at previous editions of the Biennale.The auction features an exciting mix of photographs, paintings and sculptures. Among the highlights are tw works on paper, dated 1927, by Amrita Sher Gil.Sher Gil was one of India’s most important women artists of the 20th century. Her wor-ks are rare to come b and it is rarer still, for two of her artworks to be offered in the same auction. Also on offer is Ascending (2017), by leading Italian contemporary artist Francesco Clemente.Clemente, who first visited India in 1973, gained international fame when he participa-ted in the Venice Biennale in 1970. His work has been shown at exhibitions around the world. Other auction highlights includ T V Santhosh’s Uploads of a Survivor III (2013), Bharti Kher’s Duck Face (2016), Subodh Gupta’s Untitled (2017) — a stainless steel installation, and a set of two prints by Bharat Sikka (2014/15).The auction highlights the efforts of Minal and Dinesh Vazirani as supporters of art and culture. As the offici auction house associated with the Biennale, this is the second time that Saffronart is partnering with the Kochi Biennale Foundation for a fundraiser


auction. The first edition of the auction was held in April 2015, where net proceeds amounted to over Rs2 crores. Nearly 93 per cent of the works sold, contributing to the funds needed to sustain the Biennale.“As the largest art event in the country, the Kochi Muziris Biennale has gained immense significance over the past three editions. In a fascinating group exhibition the Pearl Lam Galleries presents ‘Empirical Atlas’. Through a variety of mediums, the artists displayed each explore the relationship between empires and their influence on us, while also shedding light on a plethora of other subjects. Presented at the Singapore based gallery, the exhibition will run until late October.

The exhibition brings together a collection of works that focus on the relationship between identity and politics, as well as touching upon globalization, material pro-duction and consumer culture. Each artist explores the meaning of established and emerging empires around us and how they affect us individually. The works reflect on the aftermath of the empires that form a new world around us, through varied mediums such as role-play, code switching, and self-fashioning. The works also blend into the modernization of the urban world and the intersections of power and collective history. The landscapes and architecture simultaneously present new connections highlighting the inherent contradictions within our collapsed notions of time, space, and place. The exhibition presents itself as a constant renegotiation between natural evolution and diasporic influences. The artists participating in the exhibition include: Dharma Bum, Weixin Chong, Inci Eviner, Gao Weigang, Gonkar Gyatso, Hew Locke, Ben Loong, Francis Ng, Ged Quinn, Anne Samat, Melati Suryodarmo, Sinta Tantra, Thukral & Tagra, Zen Teh, and Yang Yongliang.
