NOTE TO SELF
Compassion Fatigue
Compassion fatigue is a combination of physical, emotional, and spiritual
depletion associated with the trauma-related work we do where others are in significant emotional pain or physical distress. It’s known as the high cost of
caring.
The Distance Learning Playbook, Grades K–12: Teaching for Engagement and Impact in Any Setting (2021) Douglas Fisher, Nancy Frey, and John Hattie.
Compassion Fatigue
Sphere of Influence Control
Influence
Limited InfluenceSphere of Influence: Learning to recognize what aspect you have:a) The greatest control over, b) Influence over c) Very little or no control /influence over.
Control = Those aspects where you have a significant amount of control over--Usually self:* What time you get up.* What project you want to focus on.* How you choose to interact with people.
Influence* = Through a) relationships, b) authority, and/or c) punishment you can influence the decisions others make by:* Modeling the desired behavior and have others imitate you.* Implementing action plans for teachers .* Threatening dismissal if certain behaviors are not shown.
Limited Influence = Those aspects where we have very limited control or influence:* Economic level of our district.* Parenting styles.* Politics within our district.
When developing intervention plans make sure your plans are not
focusing on efforts that you have limited influence over.
* If you select to use your authority and or punishment to influence individuals, be aware that once the threat of punishment or authority is removed; the individuals may regress back to their original behaviors. This is not always the case when “Relationships” influence is used.
