workers to clean 50 times more cotton than by hand

52. Fugitive Slave Act – law included in the Compromise of 1850 that helped

slaveholders recapture runaway slaves in the North.

53. Missouri Compromise – Attempt #1 to solve slavery. 1820 law that

admitted Maine as a free state & Missouri as a slave state & kept the

balance of power between slave & free states in the Senate.

54. Compromise of 1850 – Attempt #2 to solve slavery. California was

admitted as a free state for Northerners & the Fugitive Slave Act was

included for Southerners.

55. Kansas-Nebraska Act – Attempt #3 to solve slavery. Popular sovereignty

would decide if territories were free or slave – this ended the 1820

Missouri Compromise.
