workers to clean 50 times more cotton than by hand
47. spirituals – religious folk songs sang by slaves that contained coded
messages about a planned escape or an owner’s unexpected return

49. abolitionist – someone who tried to help end slavery
50. Underground Railroad – a series of aboveground escape routes with for
runaway slaves from the South to the North
51. Uncle Tom’s Cabin – 1852 abolitionist book by Harriet Beecher Stowe
about moral issues of slavery.
