Grade I - Best Out Of Waste

‘We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.’

– Native American Proverb

To unleash the creativity of young minds a “Best Out of Waste” contest was conducted for Grade 1 on 10th of July 2018. This competition proved to be a very good means of teaching the little minds how we can make productive use of the things we generally think are waste.

In order to make children aware of uses of waste, a habit must be generated amongst children as to how to put waste to the best use. Students got a first-hand experience of practicing the importance of not wasting things and putting them to good use.

The event displayed the imagination of the kids where the waste was transformed into beautiful things. It was amazing to watch their creativity unfold and their enthusiasm reaching a different high as they progressed through the competition.

Grade III – Poster Making

Art provides an opportunity for kaleidoscopic thinking. Each time we shift the lens of our perceptions, we gain new perspectives — and new opportunities for innovation. — Linda Naiman

Inter house contest ‘Poster Making’ for the students of Classes III, was held on 9th July 2018 in the school. The students displayed their artistic skills through an array of posters on the given topic. The aim of this competition was not merely to see the creative aspect but also to trigger the thought process of the children, engross the hidden talent of the students, bring out the creative expression of the students and also to gauge their awareness quotient and sensitize them towards these burning & serious issues. Competitions of the sort increase the observational skills, response to thoughts, awareness and concern of the children towards global issues. The students showed their abilities through art wherein they expressed their feelings in the form of quotations, paintings, sketch etc. All the students have participated with great enthusiasm and performed well. The students of class XII were invited to judge the competition and they were very excited about the exposure and experience they were gaining through this.

Grade VI – Reuse of E-Waste

E-waste are the toxic legacy of our digital age. We are throwing away literally tons of electronics because don’t know how to fix them. There aren’t enough recyclers in the world, to handle all the electronics we are throwing away. When electronics end up in landfills, toxics like lead, mercury and cadmium leach into the soil and water. Looking at the horrifying statistics of the amount of e-waste produced by us, there is a pressing need to educate

people to reduce, reuse and appropriately recycle e-waste. Grade VI initiated this thought through an inter house competition based on the topic Reuse of E-waste. The competition was held on 18 July, 2018. Students were divided into groups, house wise. Creativity and innovation was in the air as the students enthusiastically made Wall hangings and decorative items using E-Waste like key board, cell phone, and many other items.

Grade VIII – Creative Corner “Others have seen what is and asked why. I have seen what could be and asked why not.” – Pablo Picasso

Everyone has an imagination. Art takes it a step further. Through art, children create something that, until that point, was only imagined. Thus, they create visual manifestations of abstract ideas. It’s a way to uncover talent that may not be seen otherwise. Art is a means of communicating ideas, feelings, and solutions in a way other than verbally or written.

Grade 11 & 12 – Art Installation

“Every soul has a creative potential and from the moment you can express this creative potential, you can start changing the world. It’s not where you take things from - it’s where you take them to.” Like most moments that make up modern and contemporary art, installation art exhibits an avant-garde movement, paying particular attention to the ways in which it creatively engages audiences and expertly transforms any space into a customized, interactive environment creating new enthralling experiences.

On Friday, 6th July 2018, an art installation competition was conducted for the students of grade 11and 12 giving them a chance to explore art from new and different perspectives. The competition specified no topic or medium and students had the freedom to experiment with different objects and media to express deep concepts they truly felt connected to at the location of their choice. Not a single soul left seeing the art installations put up by the students without awe. From trying to express the deep need for equality irrespective of caste, color, creed to how life is not a beautiful at all times, but definitely worth living, participants have exhibited true creativity. One team presented a piece representing India as the fastest growing nation on the planet. Some teams elaborated on seeing the light in every dark situation, while another team enlightened the viewers and the judges about the greatness of yoga. Finally an art piece was put up which represented the concept of an ideal state of happiness, freedom and peace within and among all people and nations on earth. Principal,

Ms. Geetha Vishwanathan ma’am and Wing In-charges viewed the exhibits and interacted with the participants.

The participants had a wonderful time and took lots of memorable experiences as take away. The judges Ms. Varsha Mahendra and Mr. Kuntal appreciated the efforts made by the students. The judges and the participants indulged in deep conversations regarding the concepts the participants expressed themselves upon.

DPS MUN

It is said that for good ideas and innovation, you need human interaction, conflict and debate. On the 26th of July, 2018, Delhi Public School, Hyderabad kick started the 4th edition of the Model United Nations Conference to be held over a span of 2 days (26th and 27th July, 2018). Model United Nations, also known as Model UN or MUN, is an extra-curricular activity in which students typically roleplay delegates to the United Nations and simulate UN committees. This activity takes place at MUN conferences, which is usually organized by high schools or college MUN clubs. At the end of most conferences, outstanding delegates in each committee are recognized and given an award certificate.

“Why must students attend MUN sessions?” one might ask. MUN is a great setting where people can try to face their fear of public speaking. This chance to overcome a fear of public speaking is great because it supports delegates’ personal growth and triggers self-confidence. It will expand ones knowledge about global issues because MUN obligates every participant to understand the global issues and their opinion may contribute to solve the problems that affect our planet today. MUN teach students how to be a good diplomat with increase their diplomacy and negotiation skill. Model UN conferences are opportunities to practice research, public speaking, teamwork, negotiation, and writing skills in a safe and structured environment.

The Inauguration Ceremony was attended by the Principal of the school, Ms. Geetha Vishwanathan, teachers and the members of the honourable Secretariat along with our 250 delegates from classes IX to XII.

The ceremony began with much fervour and enthusiasm within the school premises. In her address to the audience, the Principal, Mrs. Geetha Vishwanathan, spoke about the significance of empowering young minds through active participation in such coveted events as the MUN. She urged them not only to discuss, deliberate on issues but also to assimilate and internalize the knowledge gained so that they could make a positive difference to their immediate environment. She extolled them to think and act rationally and responsibly so as to set an example for others to follow.

A lovely medley of songs followed which included the inevitable “We are the World”. Members of the Secretariat were then introduced and the chairpersons of 5 committees (WTO, INTERPOL, AIPPM, INTERNATIONAL PRESS, AI) were handed the Gavel by the Principal. “Education is the most powerful weapon with which you can change the world” said Nelson Mandela. MUN gave a chance to delegates to conduct formal debate, participate in moderated and unmoderated caucus which increased their knowledge base immensely. Participation in MUN fosters academic research, negotiation and communication skills. The delegates of AI Committee expressed that government monitoring is required on private agencies making AI. They debated on the facts that laws should be replaced by semi-autonomous system, that AI should not be used in wars and that the developed countries should train the other countries with the technical knowhow of AI. After long discussions on disadvantages of AI, its misuse and how to prevent it, they drafted a resolution in which they opined that ‘a framework should be developed to verify the misuse of AI and that it should be used for driving vehicles, field of medicine, exploring remote places and performing hazardous work like mining’.

The committee of Interpol started discussions on the various terror outfits prevalent in the world today when a crisis was declared as a ship was sighted moving towards Turkey with its flag carrying the name of a terror outfit. Two days later the Russian embassy in turkey was bombed. An emergency session was held to discuss this and after three unmoderated caucuses a notice was issued which elicited information about the calamity. The committee of AIPPM deliberated on the plight of Kashmiri Pandits in J&K. Delegates Ms. Mufti, Mayawati, Rahul Gandhi, C.F. Thomas, Modi, Sushma Swaraj and others held a heated discussion on the topic blaming each other. A crisis about a person from a minority being killed suspecting of selling beef was introduced which inspired heated debate from all the delegates of each political party. The boisterous debate that ensued was followed by a press conference where every delegate was literally roasted and few were left squirming. The delegates further pondered upon the topics of triple talaq, mob lynching, discrimination showed to women, and the corrective measures that need to be taken. WTO committee held heated debate on trade imbalances between USA and other countries like China, India etc. The discussions showcased the amazing research that the delegates equipped themselves and the interesting pot-shots they took at each other. The delegates showing highest level of efficiency and competence were awarded in the closing ceremony on 27July 2018. All the delegates and the administrative dais had an incredible experience working as a team. The event was truly an educative stimulant where students learnt to research global issues, debate, think critically and develop leadership skills. The students realized that if countries showed willingness to collaborate then many social issues can be resolved. By participating in MUN, the students of DPS Hyderabad had a powerful experience which made them global citizens aiming for world peace.

Mobile Photography

“Photography is a language more universal than words”.

—Minor White

Photography for children offers a range of exciting and valuable learning experiences.

Keeping in mind this year students of D.P.S Hyderabad tried to explore their photography skills through Mobile Photography held between

25th July and 30th July, 2018. As we all know selfies are very popular in mobile shoot among any age group. But this mobile photography has an immense chance beyond that. Photography for children can develop their learning across the curriculum and enable them to build a deeper understanding of themselves, others and their environment. Classes I to XII were provided with different topics based on their ages. Like Fruits, Flowers, Shadow, Building, Reflection etc. Some of the classes explored themselves through black and white photography, while others with colours. Through this activity students got a chance not only to understand their ideas, thoughts and feelings better but also to showcase their unique kaleidoscopic views of the world around them. The display took place in the school premises and students studied and analysed the photographs of their peers as well. D.P.S Hyderabad has taken a new initiative to prepare a good photography team that will open new doors and provide a one of a kind learning experience through the freedom of expression.

Pictures speak a thousand words…

‘Perfection consists not in doing extraordinary things, but in doing ordinary things extraordinarily well.’

– Angelique Arnauld

Class assembly of XII A and XII B was conducted on 18th July 2018 and the topic of the assembly was “Experience is the Best Teacher”. The backdrop of the assembly was appreciated a lot by the Principal, Mrs. Geetha Vishwanathan as well as the audience. It was a combined effort of Hamsa, Sadia, Rishita, Amili, Gayatri and Vishali of classes 12-A and B. They beautifully portrayed the topic of their assembly by depicting two different phases- One with knowledge but no experience, and the other with both knowledge and experience. The former was shown in a monochrome, a combination of black and white while the latter in bright colors which was vibrant and lively. A realistic face stood in between the division. A thin black rope divided the face showing two different human emotions. The strong that the backdrop conveyed was that ‘A person with no experience and having only bits of knowledge is confused which takes away his confidence, eventually leading to frustration. Whereas, the same person with experience knows how to deal with real life situations confidently, making him proud and happy.’ The cranes on either side of the division signified knowledge and speech, but were of different colours. The white cranes on the inexperienced side signified the lack of confidence that an individual might have, in expressing his views and therefore isn’t able to move forward, whereas the coloured cranes depicted confidence and thus they also held up the banner, “Experience is the best teacher”.

The black and white picture showed that experience cannot be made up of dots of random sizes, depicting bits of knowledge, are not connected. This lack of connection makes the person confused and makes him indecisive. A couple of symbols were used to illustrate this phase. These included a caterpillar and a baby bird, which symbolize immaturity, roaring waves depicting the instability of the mind and hence the idiom “Empty Vessels make more sound” and lastly, a withered away shrub, which shows the dullness of life. The dark, dull and monochrome colour shows the one-dimensional perception of inexperienced people. On the other side, the dots are coloured and connected, which represent the ability of the person to use the knowledge in real life situations. Therefore, the person is confident and happy. The symbols that illustrated the phase were the butterfly and an adult bird, depicting maturity, beauty and power, a clock, depicting time management that is being followed by these people , a pencil, depicting the immense value of education and finally, the globe, depicting that with knowledge and experience, the world would become a better place to live in.

Theme of the Month

Theme of the Month - Little Chef

“One Day . . . I’m gonna . . . make the onions cry . . .”

Theme day Little Chef was celebrated by the Pre Primary wing on 25.7.18. Little ones love getting hands-on experience in any task. Our little Dipsites were introduced to various innovative art and craft activities and variety of food choices as part of the ingenious theme of the month “the little chef-healthy and nutrition”. Designing chef hats, cooking without fire were planned as part of the event.

In the process of doing activities, the kids not just developed measuring skills, literacy skills, and direction skills as they worked on the recipe but also got exposed to myriad colors and textures pertaining to the food. They also developed socio emotional skills, motor control(while they poured, mixed and scooped), hand and eye coordination and cognitive skills . These activities also enhanced language development as they got introduced to new vocabulary like pots and pans, utensils, spoons, forks, knives, stove, spatulas, sieve and rolling pin which they get to relate in their real life. Children participated in the art of making pumpkin collage by sticking pieces of paper with help of the glue. Also, the children were narrated a story on healthy eating habits- ‘The vegetable king’. All these activities not just elevated confidence in the child but also added a great sense of belongingness to the group and also made them feel responsible. The event started with a poem “Pat a cake” recited by the children and an introduction on the theme of the month “The little chef”. The children were asked to imagine themselves as chef. Also, adorned with the chef’s costumes they were taken through the various cookware materials used in our day to day cooking, followed by a fire free bhel puri activity. The children of Nursery and Prep actively participated in the bhel puri mixing activity in two different groups per section. The theme of the month culminated by exposing the children to good habits, manners and kitchen vocabulary through audio visual aids.
