    Friday Night Flicks Movie Series Returns with The Lego Movie

    The City of East Point De- partment of Economic De-velopment is proud to an-nounce the return of the Fri-day Night Flicks OutdoorMovie Series for its fourthseason. The first movienight will be this Friday,August 15 featuring The

    Lego Movie (PG). Activi-ties for the kids will beginat 7pm, followed by themovie around 8pm-ish(once it gets dark enough tosee the movie on thescreen). The movies areshown in the DowntownCommons, 2757 East PointStreetjust one block fromthe East Point MARTATrain Station; across from

    East Point City Hall, right behind the East Point Li- brary on Main Street.

    The activities for the kidsand movie night admissionis free. Parking is also free.

    Concessions like hot popped popcorn, candy, sodas andwater will be available forsale. Be sure to bring your

    blankets and lawn chairs andgrab dinner to go at one ofthe fabulous restaurants inDowntown East Point beforeyou head over for the movie.

    East Points Centennial Quilt - A History Lesson in Needlework

    Schedule:

    Thursdays 1 - 4pmSaturdays 11am - 3pm

    In 1987, members of the East Point Womans Club stitched together aquilt to commemorate East Points Centennial. Each of the 49 squareshelps tell the story of East Points history. The quilt is on display at theEast Point Historical Society. This is the sixth in a series of East Point his-tory lessons, as reflected in a sampling of the quilts squares.

    ROSE GARDEN

    After several years in design work and fundraising, the Keep AmericaBeautiful Rose Garden was dedicated in August 1986. It was part of anationwide beautification program that continues today through KeepEast Point Beautiful. A variety of roses were planted, are maintained andnurtured by volunteers, local businesses and the city parks depart-ment. Each year in May or June, KEPB hosts a garden tea to encouragecitizens to appreciate and enjoy the roses.

    TOWER CLOCK

    The Tower Clock and the East Point MARTA station were both dedicatedon August 16, 1986, and timed to celebrate the 99 th anniversary of EastPoints incorporation. The Tower Clock was envisioned as a landmark fordowntown and an image for East Points move into its second century andits continuing associations with different forms of transportation.

    DICK LANE VELODROME

    East Point has been a destination for cycling enthusiasts from the1890s. Inspired by the 1972 Munich Olympics, the Dick Lane Velodromewas built in 1974 and was used during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics as atraining facility. One of 26 Velodromes in the U.S., it isthe only one that features a green space, oak tree andcreek in the center. It continues to serve cycling, rac-ing and youth programs. Dick Lane was a long-termdirector of East Points recreation department and astate representative.
