Computer Maintenance BasicsDon’t feel powerless, you can do this!

Check video, power and mouse/keyboard connections to verify computer is properly setup.
Verify computer is plugged in
Check internet connection via ethernet cable or WiFi. If connection is shown, but you cannot use internet, contact Internet Service Provider.

Each Windows operating system will have
different procedures for completing basic maintenance on a computer, but the
differences are normally minimal.

• In your windows search bar, enter
‘MSCONFIG’.
• Select the ‘Startup’ tab, and review programs that launch when the computer is started.
• Select the programs you don’t want running at startup, right click, then select ‘disable’.

Open ‘File Explorer’, select ‘This PC’, and verify your hard drive has available space.

Type ‘Resource Monitor’ into your Windows search bar, select the ‘Memory’ tab, and review your RAM usage.
RAM (Random Access Memory) Capacity
If your computer doesn’t come with a sticker showing your processor model, you can type ‘About System’ into your Windows search bar to get the basic information you need.

Disk DefragmentationDisk defragmentation is an application that rearranges files stored on your hard drive in order to increase access speed, which will improve your computer’s performance.
• Open ‘File Explorer’• Select ‘This PC’• Right click on ‘Windows (C:)’• Select ‘Properties’• Select ‘Tools’• Select ‘Disk Defragmenter’ or
‘Optimize’• Find ‘Windows (C:)’ and select• Select ‘Optimize’ or ‘Defragment Disk’

CHKDSKCHKDSK is a system tool for windows machines that scans your computer’s file systems and fixes file errors.

Uninstall ProgramsIt is good practice to review the programs on your system periodically and decide if you still need each on your system. Ones that are no longer in use, or shouldn’t be there in the first place, can be uninstalled from the computer.
• Type ‘Uninstall Program’ into your Windows search bar and select ‘Uninstall or Remove Program’
• Review programs on your system, and remove ones you deem unnecessary by right clicking on the item and selecting ‘Uninstall’

• Microsoft Security Essentials ( or
Windows Defender) is a free product that provides protection against various types of malicious software.
• Because this product is created by Microsoft, it will not have any compatibility issues with Windows.
• To enable, type ‘Microsoft Security Essentials’ or ‘Windows Defender’ into the Windows search bar and open the application.
• Turn on protection through the settings tab

• Exit out of popups, do not click inside the window
• Microsoft or Apple will never try to contact you through a popup
• Adblockplus.org is a great extension for your browser, and free!

Other ToolsThere are many other tools available to help you protect your computer, however your will need a decent competency level in order to safely utilize them. Here are two tools that can help if you feel comfortable giving it a try.
• Malwarebytes is an application that can help you remove unwanted malware or programs
• Safemode is Windows diagnostic tool used to identify problems in your system.
