Volunteers in RecreationPeople who help each other tend to feel better about themselves and their lives. Formorethan100years,PortlandParks&Recreationhasprovidedsafe,funactivitieswherepeoplecanconnectwithothers,learnnewskills,andimproveormaintaintheirhealth.Frompageantstosportsleaguesandartshowstohikes,volunteershaveprovidedideasandtalentstostretchourservicesandreachmorepeople–forthebenefit ofallPortlanders.
Children who participate in early learning activities do better in school. Lastyear173peoplevolunteeredinpreschoolprogramsincommunitycenters.Asaresult,childrenreceivedmoreindividualattention,volunteerslearnednewskills,andparentsfoundasocialnetwork ofpeoplewithsomethingincommon–youngchildren!
Confident children are less likely to bully or be bullied. 756middleschoolstudentsvolunteeredwiththeJr.Lifeguard,SwimInstructor,andPlaygroundLeaderprograms.Theylearnedjobskills,gainedself-confidence,exploredcareeroptions,andpracticedwhat theylearned.
Teens that are encouraged by adults tend to be more successful.715coachesshowedyoungplayersthatpreparation,effort,andteamworkleadtosuccessonandoffthecourt–demonstratingthatthere aremanyadultswhocareabouttheirwell-being.
Seniors who volunteer are healthier.
•18SeniorRecreationvolunteersled240hikesduring2013.

Trees, trails, and native habitatsNaturalareasprovideendlessopportunityforcommunityengagementthroughvolunteerism.Stewardshipcoordinatorsworkwithdozensofschoolsinwhatareeffectively“outdoorclassrooms.”Theyleadtwopublichabitatrestorationprojectseveryweekendandhelpdozensofgroupsprotectnaturalareasintheirneighborhoods.Lastyearalonetheirvolunteerslogged81,966hoursofservicearoundthecity.
Goodenvironmentalstewardshipimprovesairquality,keepsriversrunningclean,andsupportshealthypopulationsofnativewildlife.CityNatureWestfostersanastounding19volunteerorganizations,logging21,404volunteerhours.Ontheeastside,volunteersworked13,534hoursandourWillametteWatershedStewarddirected14,837hoursofvolunteerlabor.That’smorethan49,775hoursspentplantingandmulchingnativeplants,removinginvasivespecies,andrepairingtrails.Alongtheway,hundredsofPortlanderslearnedhowtherightplantintherightplaceremovesimpuritiesfromrunoffandimproveswaterquality.
Growingfruitsandvegetableshelpsgardenerssavemoneyandimprovetheirdiets.Sociologistsreportsignificantgainsin“qualityoflife”ratingswhenpeoplebegingardening.
TheCommunityGardensprogramboastsmorethan7,000bedssupportedby129volunteergardenmanagers.Approximately2,536communitygardenershavelearnedsustainablegrowingtechniqueswhilegrowingtheirownhealthyfruitsandvegetables.
Healthystreettreesincreasepropertyvalues,sequestercarbon,improveairandwaterquality–andmakethebesthomebasesforhide-and-seek!
TheNeighborhoodTreeStewardprogramtrained194 neighborhoodvolunteerstodeterminethehealthofaneighborhoodtree.Nowsicktreescanbeaddressedandhealthytreescanflourish. Thesevolunteersarehelpingtogrowahealthier,moresustainableurbancanopy.

Flower gardens refresh our senses with pleasing sights, fragrances, and textures.Our“CityofRoses”claimsmorethan20,000rosebushes.200volunteer“deadheaders”expertlysnipwiltingbudssovisitors canenjoyaflushofcolorsfromJunethroughHalloween.
Engaged neighbors keep communities cleaner, safer, and more livable.AtMtTaborPark,27volunteerswalkedthetrails,pickinguplitterandreportingproblems,whileothersspent1,581hoursremovinginvasiveplants.ThenewVisitorCenterwelcomedguestsfromacrosstheUnitedStatesand32countries.
They also bring new ideas.Since1989,ColumbiaParkvolunteershavekeptthe“community”intheirneighborhoodpark.TheyrestoredtheoldStoneCottagetoabeautifulspotsuitableforweddings,birthdayparties,andothercommunityevents.
Even small groups can make a huge difference.TheFriendsofArgayParkpatroltheneighborhood,tendthepark’sflowergarden,and,everysummer,hostmoviesandconcertsin thepark.Theyhavefewerthanadozenmembers,buttheyhave ahugeimpactbyencouragingcommunityprideandneighborhoodinvolvement.
