    From design to scaleup on a pilot scale of microbial and enzymatic processes. Theoretical andmethodological foundations of applied chemical kinetics and design of chemical reactors with thecharacteristics(kineticsandtransportphenomena)ofbiochemicalandmicrobiologicalprocessesinordertosystematizetheprinciplesunderlyingtheanalysisanddesign/sizingofbioreactors.Specifics:

    (Micro)biologicalprocessescharacterizedkineticallyandthermodynamically:cellgrowth,itsmeasurementorestimation,useofsubstrate(s),formationofproduct(s).Yields.Productivities.Kineticmodels.Parameterestimation.Themethodologyofmaterialandenergybalancesfortheanalysisofbiotechnologicalsystemsandoftheirperformance.Batch,continuous,semicontinuousreactors.Transportphenomenaappliedtotheanalysisofaeration,agitation,rheology,scaleupandsterilizationofbioreactors.

    Attheendofthisactivity,thestudentisableto:

    1.Applythemethodologyofmaterialbalancestotheanalysisofbiotechnologicalsystems2.Applythemethodologyofenergybalancetotheanalysisofbiotechnologicalsystems3.Applythemethodologyofreactordesigntotheanalysisanddesign/sizingofbioreactors(areaofbiochemicalandmicrobiologicalprocesses)inthespecificcaseofbatchreactors4.Applythemethodologyofreactordesigntotheanalysisanddesign/sizingofbioreactorsinthespecificcaseofCSTR(continuousstirredtankreactor).5.Applythemethodologyofreactordesigntotheanalysisanddesign/sizingofbioreactorsinthespecificcaseofsemicontinuousreactors(fedbatch).6.Applymasstransferphenomenaintheanalysisofdifferentoperations(aeration,agitation,etc.)thatcantakeplaceinbioreactors.7.     10.Search for real values of constants ''or of other parameters in correlations that are essential to thedesign/sizingofbiologicalreactors.

    11.Aspartof thedesignofanewbiologicalreactorpropose inareasonedmanner(with itsadvantagesand limitations) the design of themost appropriate reactor with respect to the industrial context underconsideration.

    1. These exercises are designed to familiarize the student with themethodology of solving quantitative problems in the design and analysis of bioprocesses:makes use ofcalculationsforsizingorperformance,constructionofflowsheetscombiningunitoperations,searchofrealvalues of constants or other parameters of correlations useful in design or modeling / optimization of

Kineticmodels ofmicrobial growth.Modeling of a batch reactor modeling of acontinuous stirred biological system with and without recycling ' twostage continuous stirred systems.Enzymatic process reactors design and performance. Sterilization processes. Scaleup from laboratoryscale throughpilot scale to industrial scale.Bioseparationsengineering. Ideal recoveryprocess:primaryseparation, isolation, purification and polishing.
