Teach your children well
From the principal Hi everyone – What a SPECTACULAR year!!!
Schools Spectacular
Last Friday night I travelled down to Sydney to attend the Schools Spectacular and it really was amazing. The talent
that we have and develop in our public schools is exceptional. Our schools take all comers, regardless of financial
background and academic capabilities. We are inclusive and supportive and I felt very proud to be part of such a
wonderful organisation.
I truly believe that the health of our society depends on a strong public education system that promotes acceptance and
tolerance of each other no matter what economic or ethnic background we have. This has never been more important
than now. I have been a public education teacher for 40 years and my passion and belief in our power to ensure a
cohesive society has never diminished. Anyway, enough of the soapbox!
We were very fortunate to have seats three rows from the front. Despite being on the side, we had a great view and
imagine our excitement when our own students ended up right in front of us in the finale, amongst thousands of other
students. The theme of the Spectacular this year was ‘Dream Big’ and the intention that the performance would inspire
excellence. That is what we always encourage our students to do. The sky is the limit and excellence is what we must
aim for.
The Schools Spectacular organisers write:
“International research has proven that involvement in the arts results in increased engagement and improved
results for students, and high-quality, participatory arts education has been shown to have the greatest impact on
students’ self-esteem and life satisfaction.”
We absolutely agree! Huge thanks to Ms Skinner and Mrs Seymour for having the passion and commitment to give up
so many hours to train the group, fundraise, and leave families for a week to accompany the group to Sydney.
Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
From last week, if you are thinking about presents for Christmas, why not buy your child a laptop, especially if he/she
is going into senior school. We do have some laptops to share but it is so much better for them to have their own. If you
think you have found a device that looks promising, why not visit your friendly Technology Support team here at
school free of charge and get some advice about the best machine to buy.
End of an Era
2016 is a very auspicious year for Yvonne Coffee and her family.
This year marks the end of the 50th year of continuous education at
Trangie Central School for Yvonne and her family. Sue-Ann was
the first when she enrolled in 1966, followed by Grant, Andrew,
Todd, Monique and Meg then followed by their children.
It is very fitting that Ellie, Sue-Ann’s daughter and who has just
finished her HSC, should be last.
Yvonne has been on P&C, canteen, Mothers Club, attended
excursions and sporting events. Always supporting and always
there for her family, Yvonne epitomises the parents and
grandparents who work for their family at the school and with the
school. TCS would like to recognise your contribution and say
thank you. And now, it might be time for you to have a rest!
Finally ........
My door is and always has been open – whether you are happy, sad or mad. I need to know if we are not doing
something right but I also need to know that you trust our motives and our intentions. Everything we do, every single
day is for YOUR children. If we can do it better, tell us – to our face. FaceBook is the coward’s way out!
All the best

Years 9-11 Sydney ‘Urban Challenge’ Excursion
Mrs Wilson and Mr Jones will be travelling to Sydney next week with our senior students for their major excursion for
this year. The ‘Urban Challenge’ should provide many fun educational experiences and give our students a greater
awareness of living in a city environment. We look forward to hearing about their adventures when they return.
University of Newcastle Visit
Next week (Week 9) some of our Year 9 girls will be travelling to Newcastle to spend a week at the university where
they will be participating in a program designed to develop an awareness of university life and encourage them to
consider attending Newcastle University after the completion of their HSC.
Year 8 Swimming
Our Year 8 students are participating in a Swimming Program as part of PD/H/PE on Tuesday mornings. Please
ensure that students come prepared for this activity with suitable swimming clothing, pool entry fee, sunscreen etc.
ANZAC Mural
Mr Jones and several students will continue working on the mural at Trangie USMC. This project has been delayed
due the many wet days experienced earlier in the year.
The Amazing Race - SRC
Unfortunately, the SRC “Amazing Race”
planned for this week has had to be postponed.
This event will be rescheduled to a suitable
time in the new year.
2017 Swimming Carnival
Be sure to get in early for the 2017 TCS
Swimming Carnival to be held first week back
next year. Entry form is on the Sports page of
this weeks newsletter.

4T’s Gobondery Cup
On Wednesday 23rd November, Mrs Rush
took eight students to Tottenham to
participate in the Gobondery Cup. We
participated in European Handball and AFL
against Tottenham, Tullamore and Trundle.
We won all of the AFL games and won two
and drew one of the European Handball
games. While this was an excellent result, we
came third because we didn’t provide a senior
team! We also went to the pool for some
activities and teamed up with the other
schools to compete in the Gobondary Cup
Trivia, which the teachers won. We all had a
great day and had the opportunity to make
lots of new friends.

The Trangie Central School Aboriginal Dance Group is
winding up for the year and what a year it has been! We
could not be any prouder of their achievements and with
Schools Spectacular finishing up for 2016, it was a nice
way to finish as a team.
These students have run many dance workshops in the
local community, sharing their cultural knowledge through
dance, even performing at prestigious events! They again
ran a successful NAIDOC Touch Football Knockout which
helps raise funds for the Trangie USMC to help pay for the
service men and women’s breakfast on ANZAC Day in which they also help serve on the day. They took on new
challenges this year, working with the Trangie LALC to run the community Halloween night, each playing an integral
part and also performing at the Grandparent’s Day luncheon. There is more to us than just dance. Our students are
forever giving back to their community’s and TCS is so proud of them for this!
During last week’s Schools Spectacular, the students officially
added TWO Guinness World Records to their resumes. The
first was breaking the current record held at just over 2000
students performing in the same item on an amateur stage with
over 5000 students in this year’s Schools Spectacular
performance. The second was being the largest group of
Aboriginal performers on stage at once in an amateur staged
production with a total 350 students. Not everyone can say they
hold a Guinness World Record and we are so proud to
contribute to this success!
This is a bitter-sweet moment for the team as we lose two of our main dancers
this year as they progress into their HSC year. Pat Skinner and Nick Newman
have been leaders and frontiers of our story as a dance group; being part of our
very first dance group 5 years ago. They have stuck with the group and the
growth in their ability and skill has inspired not only me as a teacher, but their
peers too. They have played a huge role in developing Aboriginal culture and
pride in our student body, school and their communities. Although they will still
be dancing during 2017, we recognise that their HSC is vital and wish them all
the best with the next stage of their lives. We thank you for your community
work and for being great role models for our younger dancers currently in the
group and those coming up through the Primary ranks.
The Aboriginal Dance Group is looking to expand in 2017 and we encourage you to give it a go. We are looking
forward to a bigger and better 2017!

Our Students Shine in Canberra
Last week 32 students and four staff spent a very informative, fun and action packed week in
Canberra. The students were enthusiastic learners, took great pride in keeping their rooms and
belongings neat and tidy and really looked out for each other. Our days were extremely busy and
long but I was particularly proud of how the students maintained their composure and took every
opportunity to learn more and ask questions.
At the Australian War Memorial, a place where hundreds of school groups from all over
Australia visit each week, our guide was left speechless by the group that accompanied Noelene
and I. He said he’d never met such thoughtful children and was really impressed with their questioning and the
respect they demonstrated when touring the building. He even gave them each a complimentary poppy! It was a very
proud moment for Trangie Central School and our little town. Please see the following pages for the highlights of
their excursion.
School Food Reminder
As the weather heats up it is important to stay
hydrated. Please pack lots of fresh fruit and
vegetables for your children as well as a drink

could get the earthquake seismometer to scribble. It got to about 3cm

Here’s a little fact for you from the National Dinosaur Museum….as
dinosaurs bred they sometimes got smaller, for example sloths used to be
enormous! This process is called evolution” – Bayley Barber
“At the War Memorial we all walked into a room that had a real
helicopter from the Vietnam War. After a while the air conditioners were
on really high, guns started blasting and radios were being used. It was a
re-enactment and made many of us feel scared” – Summah McMaster
“We went to a cinema at the National Museum, but it wasn’t an ordinary cinema, it was a rotating cinema that went
around in quarter circles. We watched mini clips. This experience helped me learn more about Australian History”
Brock Kilgour
“The Australian Institute of Sport was one of my favourite places. We saw gymnasts from the Australian team
practising flips. We had free time in a big building full of sporting challenges and the part I liked the most was
seeing the 100m sprint runner doing weights in the gym” – Cheyenne Kemp
“When we arrived at Cockington Green we were swept away into a world of miniature houses, landscapes and
figurines. We walked along the gravelly paths; each step discovering a new and wonderful creation” – Stacey
Stoneman
“When the Europeans first came to Australia, England was in the middle of a depression and couldn’t afford to send
over many coins for use as money. Luckily they had a thousand Dutch coins. Aussies cut out the centres and then
had twenty thousand coins” – Luke Broughton
“When we went to Canberra we did lots of things but Lanyon Homestead was my favourite. It never existed until all
of the convicts came over and built the stables, outbuildings and houses. We worked as convicts all morning.”
Emmerson Fraser
“In Questacon we were able to follow our interests and go where we wanted. There were different interactive
stations that you could experiment with hands-on science. The building was a tower and we spiralled our way
upwards” – Xanthe St Clair
“Every law made in Australia has to be discussed in the House of Representatives. The topic is debated between the
two teams; the government and the opposition until the topic is agreed on. The debate afterwards goes to the
senate….The House of Representatives is a green room. The green in the room is the same colour and tone of
Eucalyptus leaves. There are many different eucalyptus leaves so every row of seats in the House of Representatives
is different, beautiful shades of green” – Kamaliyah Khan

3/4M have been studying the Science unit ‘Built Environments’. The focus for this unit was on using built
environments not just from their own experiences, but also the wider world. Students enjoyed all the learning
experiences and developed a thorough understanding that built environments are designed for a purpose. We
especially loved engaging in the Angry Bird Tower Challenge where students had to work with a partner to create
their own built structures. They were given access to various materials and they got to choose which ones to use and
how. Each group was given a checklist so that their structure met the requirements. It had to support the Angry Birds
from an attack by the Piggies as well as withstand wind, earthquakes and hail. We had a ball constructing the
structures as well as testing them against the various earth forces and attack of the Piggies!
Please also enjoy some other examples of 3/4M working hard on Visual Arts and Social Skills. Thanks for all your
hard work 3/4M - you have all done a fantastic job with learning this term!
