The novel that I learnt in Form Five is ‘The Curse’ written by Lee Su Ann. There are many
places or settings involved in this novel but today I am going to write about the physical
setting o the novel. There are two main physical settings in this novel. The story started with
the setting in London when we were introduced to the main character! A"reen Saleh.
#asically! the readers are introduced to the university college where A"reen was pursuing an
undergraduate course. The readers are given more inormation that A"reen was going to sitor her e$ams soon but she had to ly bac% to &alaysia due to her sister! &adhuri’s death.
'e$t! we are brought to e$perience the lie o the university college when A"reen had to wal%
through the college’s residential hall. (ere! A"reen’s thoughts lew bac% when she recalled
her two years o student e$periences. She had many sweet e$periences in her lie as a student.
She also met many new riends o various races here and she was reluctant to go bac% to
&alaysia even or a while. The second physical setting is when we are ta%en to )LIA *)uala
Lumpur International Airport+. (ere! A"reen had to wait or two hours beore she could
board a connecting light to ,ulau Lang%awi! her hometown. -hen A"reen was recalling her
old times with her sister! &adhuri! the readers are brought to Lang%awi International
Airport. A"reen meets her oster parents! atin Shariah and atu% /ul%ili who came toreceive her at the airport. Last but not least! we are brought together with A"reen to ,ulau
Lang%awi and a little village. In this beautiul! small village! we are introduced to A"reen’s
home where she had bitter sweet memories or A"reen when she remembers about her
sister. 'e$t! the village itsel was the place where all the drama ta%es place! both in the past
and present.

The Curse by Lee Sue Ann! the character that I consider e$emplary is A"reen because she is

‘&other’s Love’ The novel ‘The Curse’ by Lee Su Ann touches on many values that are useul
in our daily lives. As or me! I am touched with the value o mother’s love in this novel.
A"reen’s mother is orever seen tal%ing nonsense since her Al"heimer’s disease was becoming
worse. She was not given a name in this novel but always reerred to as ‘&a%’. A"reen elt
guilty because she was the one who was responsible or her mother to loose one o her leg.
2ven though! we %now that A"reen admitted leaving the gate o the arm open but actually
she was only helping &ohd Asra rom being blamed. ue to her act! her parents met with an
accident when her ather’s motorcycle hit the bull. A"reen’s mother never hated A"reen or
what had happened and she always loved A"reen. She even told A"reen that it was not her
ault that she lost her leg in the accident. This proves that ‘&a%’ was never angry towards
A"reen and she accepts what happened to her as aith. This shows the true love that a mother
has or her child even though she is in pain. Another incident that showed how true a
mother’s love is when &adhuri’s mother! the mad lady who strolled in the village and always
watched over her daughter. 2ven though &adhuri was raised by 2nci% Saleh and his wie
rom a baby! the mad lady always %ept hersel close to &adhuri. She used to watch &adhuriand A"reen when they come bac% rom school. This shows that she still loved her daughter
even though she gave in when her baby was lost. She %new she could not raise &adhuri in a
proper way so she 5ust %ept ?uite when 2nci% Saleh too% the baby and decided to raise the
child. #ut as a mother! she still loved &adhuri and always sees how her daughter is living
with her oster parents rom ar. This is what we call mother’s love. 2ven i the child is not
with the real mother but she always pray or her child to lead a happy lie and that is why she
too% revenge against 2nci% Saleh who %illed &adhuri. From these two mothers! the readers
are shown the value o love that a mother has or a child. #oth mothers in this novel are not

‘The Curse’! the main character is A"reen. She has a ather and his name is 2nci% Saleh. As or
me! throughout the novel! 2nci% Saleh portrayed negative traits even though the positive
ones were hidden within him. Firstly! 2nci% Saleh is very hot@tempered. As apoor armer in a remote village in ,ulau Lang%awi! 2nci% Saleh is a strong man as he had
hard physi?ue! huge ists and o course he is very hard@wor%ing man. (e wor%ed all the time
on the arm to earn a living and his daughters always %now him as a very hot@tempered man.
-e can see this when he ordered A"reen to ta%e her mother home when she too% her mother
to the cemetery to visit &adhuri’s graveyard. 2nci% Saleh was very angry because A"reen
too% her sic%ly mother there I thin% he should have understood the situation and ace the
act that both o the ladies came to pay respect to &adhuri. (e should not shout at them
because they are also sad about &adhuri’s death even though his wie doesn’t %now or reali"e
the act that &adhuri was dead. (ere! I would strongly say that 2nci% Saleh portrayed the
negative ?uality to the readers. Secondly! I see 2nci% Saleh as a very 5udgmental and biasedperson. (e loves &adhuri as his eldest daughter because she is ull o good ?ualities whereas
he is always stern and angry towards A"reen. Actually! 2nci% Saleh oten mis5udges A"reen
because he sees himsel in her. This is because A"reen reminds him o himsel who also used
to be outspo%en and hot@tempered when he was young and he still is the same until now. I
always see that 2nci% Saleh punishes A"reen wrongly or too severely until he used to cane her
even when she was small. All these prove that 2nci% Saleh is a very 5udgmental and biased
person and o course I would not be li%e him. Finally! I also ind 2nci% Saleh is too mean in
his traditional ways by being strict to his children. The incident where he grabbed A"reen and
led her out o &adhuri’s room in anger proves how strict he was towards A"reen. (e even
raised his ist to punch A"reen when she argued with him. #ut! to avoid punching her! he
ordered A"reen to go to the dining room and attend to her mother. There was even a situation
where A"reen and 2nci% Saleh ate their dinner in complete silence. All these proves that
2nci% Saleh is too traditional and strict towards his children and I thin% this is not at all
appropriate. ,arents and children should discuss whatever problems that occur in their
everyday lives. #ased on all the evidences above! it is surely proven that 2nci% Saleh is all

in the novel that is ‘courage’. The value o ‘courage’ can be seen clearly in A"reen’s character.
A"reen was a good riend with the 3ld Lady who became a precious conidante and
counsellor despite ignoring the warnings and pre5udices o the villagers. A"reen was
determined to riends with the 3ld Lady till the last minute o the 3ld Lady’s lie.As a child!
she was not allowed to visit the 3ld Lady by her parents. 2ven the villagers warned A"reen
that the 3ld Lady is a witch. This shows that A"reen is very courageous or accepting the 3ld
Lady or what she is. From this! I learnt to be courageous in order to spea% and act according
to what I thin% is right. I also learnt not to 5udge others by listening to rumors and to thin%
practically. A"reen also showed courage when she too% the blame or the bull’s escape inorder to save &ohd Asra. At irst! she wanted to help Asra out rom the wic%ed arm owner!

this situation and agree to what she had done. She taught me to stand up or my believes in
my lie and this will really help me a lot in the uture. Last but not least! I also ind A"reen asa courageous person when she challenged her ather to reveal the truth behind &adhuri’s

setting0 escribe the physical setting o the novel... The novel that I learnt in Form Five is
‘The Curse’ written by Lee Su Ann. There are many places or settings involved in this novel
but today I am going to write about the physical setting o the novel. There are two main
physical settings in this novel. The story started with the setting in London when we were
introduced to the main character! A"reen Saleh. #asically! the readers are introduced to the
university college where A"reen was pursuing an undergraduate course. The readers are
given more inormation that A"reen was going to sit or her e$ams soon but she had to ly
bac% to &alaysia due to her sister! &adhuri’s death. 'e$t! we are brought to e$perience the
lie o the university college when A"reen had to wal% through the college’s residential hall.
(ere! A"reen’s thoughts lew bac% when she recalled her two years o student e$periences.
She had many sweet e$periences in her lie as a student. She also met many new riends o
various races here and she was reluctant to go bac% to &alaysia even or a while. The second
physical setting is when we are ta%en to )LIA *)uala Lumpur International Airport+. (ere!
A"reen had to wait or two hours beore she could board a connecting light to ,ulau
Lang%awi! her hometown. -hen A"reen was recalling her old times with her sister! &adhuri!
the readers are brought to Lang%awi International Airport. A"reen meets her oster parents!
atin Shariah and atu% /ul%ili who came to receive her at the airport. Last but not least!
we are brought together with A"reen to ,ulau Lang%awi and a little village. In this beautiul!small village! we are introduced to A"reen’s home where she had bitter sweet memories or
A"reen when she remembers about her sister. 'e$t! the village itsel was the place where all
the drama ta%es place! both in the past and present. From my e$planation above! it is proven
that the physical setting o the novel varies and creates an enthusiastic eeling when we read
the novel. From London to ,ulau Lang%awi is what the whole novel is about. Hou might also

about the theme o ‘love’ which is actually the main conlict in this whole novel. Firstly! we
can see this aspect between mother and child when we read how loving was A"reen towards
her mother when she came bac% rom London. She reali"ed her mother still does not %now
about the death o her sister! &adhuri. A"reen too% over the duty to ta%e care o her mother

or her mother li%e &adhuri used to do and ed her. This shows that A"reen loves her mother very much and eels responsible to ta%e care o her ater her sister’s death. The concept o
‘love’ can also be seen through 2nci% Saleh who loves his daughters very much but does not
%now how to show it. (e %ept his love within him and was always loo%ing ierce and angry

best out o him due to his love towards them which he does not show openly. (ere! I admit
that I admire 2nci% Saleh as a loving ather towards his amily but he should have shown his
love in a more appropriate way. Lastly! the concept o love can be seen in the characters o the
3ld Lady and A"reen. A"reen was very luc%y to ind a meaningul and comortablerelationship with the 3ld Lady o the orest. She was very close to the 3ld Lady until she told
her all her secrets. She always goes and visits the 3ld Lady whenever she elt bored! angry or
happy. This shows that A"reen really loves the 3ld Lady and does not give a single thought to
what the villagers say about the 3ld Lady. A"reen’s love towards the 3ld Lady was very
strong until she was willing to go into the burning house in order to save the 3ld Lady. #ut!
aith wins. The 3ld Lady died in the ire while A"reen was saved by her ather due to his love
towards his daughter. As we can see! the concept o ‘love’ is very strong throughout the novel.

-rite on the theme o orgiveness.... Lee Su Ann! the writer o the novel ‘The Curse’ had
brought up many themes in her writing. 3ne o the themes that I li%ed very much in this
novel is ‘orgiveness’ which was clearly portrayed in A"reen’s character. As we %now rom the
beginning! A"reen is a very outspo%en! aggressive and stubborn character but towards the
ending o the story she had learnt to orgive others. A"reen was very much inluenced by the
3ld Lady who begged A"reen to learn to orgive others at the time o her death. -e can see
very much that A"reen %ept her promise when she orgave &ohd Asra who had deliberately
played with her emotions. All the while A"reen thought Asra li%ed her but! Asra was actually
alling or &adhuri and when he admitted that to A"reen! she was speechless at irst. A"reen
hid hersel rom Asra by running away until she reached the cli o the hills when Asraconessed his love towards &adhuri. #ut as time passed! her anger melted away slowly and
she orgave Asra as the 3ld Lady had told to her 5ust beore she died. A"reen too learnt to
orgive her ather who murdered &adhuri. 2ven though she elt sad at irst but she did not
eel angry or resentment at him but she reali"ed that she had lost her only ather that she
used to %now as a very hot@tempered man. Slowly A"reen orgave her ather but she could not
see him eye to eye so she let him alone and that was the time when 2nci% Saleh had a heart
attac% and collapsed. #ut i at all A"reen had not promised the 3ld Lady to orgive others! I
do not thin% that she would orgive her ather or murdering &adhuri. A"reen too orgave
&adhuri or all the hurt and resentment she caused in A"reen’s lie. A"reen was 5ealous o
&adhuri’s beauty and genteel behavior. She was the avorite daughter. She also resented&adhuri as &adhuri was able to captivate Asra who eventually ell in love with her. #ut!

she inds out the truth and leaves or London an orphan but more resilient and wise. The
character I li%e most is A"reen Salleh. She is a :J@year@old student who is studying in a
university college in London on an e$change programme. She is short! bespectacled! rather
boo%ish and outspo%en. I li%e A"reen because she is outspo%en and she is not araid to spo%e
her mind. She is vocal and says her opinions although sometimes she says the wrong things
at the wrong time. She also hates her atherNs treatment o her oster parents and &adhuriNs burial ceremony that is conducted without her presence. In handling the village gossip! ,n
'ormala! A"reen tells her o that the rain has started even beore the 3ld Lady comes into
town. The second ?uality she has is she is courageous. As a child! she plays hoc%ey and
ootball with the boys. In the bullNs incident! she is brave enough to accept the blame or the
bullNs escape instead o blaming someone else. A"reen also shows her courage by ta%ing up
the dare to %noc% on the 3ld LadyNs door when none wants to do it. In another instance!
A"reen conronts her ather about &adhuriNs murder despite her young age. A"reen also has
strength o character. -hen she returns to her village! she hears a lot o gossip surrounding
her sisterNs death such as as &adhuri having white blood and her death signals a curse to the
villagers. A"reen eels upset but she never retaliates. Sheshows patience and strengh becauseshe %nows that whatever she does! she cannot stop the villagers rom gossiping about her
amily. In another instance! A"reen is told that her sister is murdered. She should have
been very upset about this news but she ta%es it calmly and does not become hysterical.
Later! when she inds out that her ather is the culprit who %ills &adhuri! she eels no
anger but regrets that it has to happen. She understands her atherNs anger and shame
because &adhuri has been having an illicit aair with Ashra although she is already married
to (5 Mhani. A"reen also shows a lot o strength because ater all that has happened to her
amily! she stays composed and strong and returns to 2ngland or her e$aminations.
Clearly1In conclusion! there are many ?ualities in A"reen that I admire and she is the
character that I li%e most in the story. Hou might also li%e0 The Curse @ ,ractice *Chapter 7+

in this novel portray many %inds o traits in order to capture the attention o the readers. As
or me! the character that I admire most is o course! the pretty and charming &adhuri.
&adhuri is A"reen’s elder sister and she is about :> years old. &adhuri is li%ed by everyone
in the village and also by her parents because she was very ilial and obedient. As a good and
obedient daughter! she helped her parents in household chores. &adhuri used to coo%
chic%en porridge or her mother and eed her. #esides! she had never gone against her
ather’s wish when she married the man that her ather chose or her. She was married to(a5i Mhani who was the village headman and he too% her as his second wie. 2ven though
she %new that (a5i Mhani was married but 5ust to obey her ather’s wishes! she was ready to
be the headman’s second wie. The sense o obedience in &adhuri’s character really attracted
me and I learnt to love my parents more ater reading this novel. The second reason why I
admire &adhuri is because she was very pretty and charming. She was introduced to the
readers when A"reen recalled about her sister’s beauty during her 5ourney bac% to &alaysia
rom London. &adhuri was eatured in many photos and in school concerts when she too%
