Our rotational seating planSeating in professional orchestras was, for the longest time from best to last, strongest to weakest, favored to less. It is the easiest way for the director and teacher to assign positions, and for the audience to identify the elite players. It develops fewer leaders and more disappointed section players. In the orchestra seating at LVA, we have a rotation plan that allows more players to be 1st chair and for the best to, also, sit within the section. Additional advantages to rotation seating are; the opportunity to learn from the different strengths of more players in each concert rotation, preparing more leaders, and avoiding “I’m the 2nd crummiest” as my brother once said as a little kid. The huge factor, though, is that, those sitting the farthest from the conductor have the biggest ob-stacles to overcome, timing, sightlines and not hearing other instruments easily. Our plan takes the playing test score for the piece, the ranking in the other concert pieces so that most players do not sit next to the same player again, and spreads leader players on the outside (nearest the audience) of each stand:
1 23 84 95 106 117 12
The Chicago Symphony (one of the most esteemed orchestras in the world), the Las Vegas Philharmonic, and many other orchestras have a ro-tation plan that keeps the first two or three players at the front and rotates all of the others over the course of the concert season. Most of our violins will move between sections during the season and often during a concert.
Thank you - The Directors
