Messages from Our Principal
Education Week Open Day - Thursday 15 August
Education Week is a celebration of Public Education. Our Education Week will be celebrated from 13 - 15
August. The theme for Education Week 2019 is
“Every Student, Every Voice”
Education Week is one of the most exciting events on our school’s calendar. It is a week where we open
our doors to allow you, our parents and friends, the opportunity to see quality teaching and learning that
students experience on a daily basis. As a working parent I understand how difficult it is to get away from
work to visit school, but if you have a chance to spend a couple of hours at Wideview Public School you will
be pleased with what you see.

Road Safety
As you would be aware, the roads around schools are very busy and congested during peak drop off and
pick up times. Often, we can be in a hurry to leave and some may be tempted to take short cuts and not
show expected courtesy to other road users. The safety of our students, families and staff is our prime con-
cern. Both your own children and others follow behaviours they observe by adults; please follow road rules
to ensure safety. While we remind students of road safety throughout the year, we urge you to also please
take the time to discuss safe road and footpath rules with your children.
Attendance
Attending school every day makes learning easier for your child and helps children to build and maintain
friendships with other children. Students are strongly encouraged to be on time for school and to attend
school every day. Establishing a consistent pattern of attendance is the right of every child and allows them
to achieve to their capacity.
Arriving at school on time:
ensures that your child doesn’t miss out on the important learning activities scheduled early in the day
when they are most alert,
helps your child to learn the importance of punctuality and routine,
gives your child time to greet their friends before class and therefore,
reduces the opportunity for classroom disruption.
Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained to the school the same way as other forms
of absence.

Stage 2 Writing Group
During Term 2, a group of talented writers meet weekly to develop their vocabulary and description of
characters and action to bring their imaginative stories to life. Below is a snippet of their fantastic
writing.
Left with no choice, he decided to head into the mines himself. It wouldn’t be a problem for other people,
as they had all left. Master Januit looked brave, but inside, he was really worried about Nate. It was a long
trip to the hole… but there it was. Master Januit hit the brakes on the mine cart really hard, determined to
save Nate. As soon as he saw that hole, he reached for the climbing gear he always kept with him, and
climbed down the cliff. But it turns out Nate wasn’t the only one expected to arrive… Lucas – Year 3
“Hello? Is anyone there?’’ called Grace. There was no answer. Grace slumped against a rock that helped
hide the little cave she was living in. As she stood there she wondered what life would be like with parents
and a proper house to live in.
Grace had been an orphan since she was a little younger than four. When she was three years old, the war
had been going on for about six months. After her father left to fight, her mother decided that they were
going to flee to India before the war got worse. After about five months on board a crowded ship full of
disease, Grace’s mother became terribly ill. Hanna – Year 3
We pushed our boards into the water, laughing. I felt my feet exit the hot, golden sand into the crystal-
clear water. Little waves sloshed against my thigh as I went further out. I climbed onto my board. I felt a
rush of excitement bolt through my body once more. By my side was my best friend is Emmeline Green,
one of the top junior surfers and her dad, Tomas Green, a professional surfer; famous in our area. Some
people even nicknamed him ‘Lord of the Waves’, which always made me laugh. Most days I try and go
surfing but sometimes I am not allowed.
As I started paddling, Tomas warned me, “Be careful Elizabeth. Its shark season” he muttered, a tone of
worry was creeping up his throat. I was more than a little surprised. Normally, he would be so amazingly
confident. I was often in awe of his confidence. Suddenly, a wall of water engulfed us. I swam to
the surface gasping for air. My friends coughed and sputtered next to me. “Some big wave, huh?” he
yelled. Then we went out into the waves again. Demi – Year 4
I opened my eyes.
The wind howled and blew a bitter chill past the dying trees -- it danced with the leaves and dragged them
away from the autumn ground. The forest seemed to never end; tall silhouettes shadowing the ground,
vultures circling overhead, and screams echoing through the wind.
I walked through the twisted forest and it looked like a dream. I found it hard to control myself, and ended
up walking in completely random directions, not one I chose. It was empty, apart from trees and grass.
Voices came from my head that sounded like familiar yells. ‘Run!’ ‘Stop!’
Yelling and crying was all I could hear apart from leaves crunching below my feet. Leaves from the trees
didn’t rustle, and the rain dripping onto the ground didn’t make a sound. My crying for help wasn’t even a
whisper anymore. My throat hurt as well as every part of my body. Myles – Year 4

After several days of walking, a surge of hunger started to rise in my stomach. I….Must…Find…Food, I
thought. As I struggles to walk further I came out onto vast fields, the sun was shining a beautiful gold, and
animals were scattered everywhere, grazing on dark green grass. ‘Beautiful’, I said to myself and ran onto
the fields. All of a sudden, I saw a large lake, the water shimmering in the sun. A sudden wave of relief
came over me.
AS I came to the beautiful lake, I bent down on my knees and cupped the water in my hands. I brought the
water up to my mouth and took a great sip. The water flowed through my body, hydrating every inch of
me. L uke – Year 4
Ellie took a tentative step forward, and pressed the vial to her lips. The liquid inside tasted incredible, like
honey and vanilla mixed together. She stepped off the stand, and looked to the right, to welcome her spirit
animal. There was a blinding flash, and a fox appeared on the stand. Everyone gasped. Zara – Year 4
One not so lucky day, Lezzy had arrived home from another awful day at school. School felt like being a
trapped tiger in an enclosure made of bulletproof glass and the only thing you can do, is pace up and down
the cage. But home was different. At home she felt as free as a bird, probably because she didn’t have to
deal with the foolish talk that came from the bullies’ mouths. Once again she smelt that sweet smell that
had permanently scented her corridor for the past 20 years. Once she had reached her room she heard a
faint voice coming from downstairs. Scarlett – Year 4
I sneaked up to the office window and peered in. A high-pitched shriek came from the meeting. I heard
footsteps going through the corridor. “What happened?” someone grunted. I knew it was the principal. I
grabbed my film camera with shivering hands and crept up to the door.
“I will take over the school no matter what you try to do!” she snapped at Amy.
By now my hands were trembling so much I nearly dropped the camera. Suddenly, the principal turned to-
wards the window. I quickly ducked out of view, but it was too late. She dropped Amy to the ground and
ran outside. I was frozen with fear. Tara – Year 2

our annual Book Character Parade on Tuesday 20 August starting at 9:30am. Stu-
dents can come dressed as their favourite book or movie character. The parade
will be held under the infants’ COLA. We would love to see parents and grandpar-
ents in the crowd to cheer on the children as they parade in their costumes!
