Device Design

We built our device out of wood and car track.

PVC was also used for the rope to go around like a pulley.

A little remote control car goes along the top and runs into a balloon and there is a free weight at the end of the rope that’s attached to the balloon.

At the end a flag is raised.

Summary of Operation

Our Device contains several ramps that a ball travels down.

It falls into a cup and pulls a string that pulls the trigger of the remote control for the car.

The car moves toward the balloon and pops it and that releases a weight that opens a clamp

The opening of the clamp releases the string that holds the banner down so the banner is released

Calculations

We used the conservation of energy equation to find the speed at which the weight would hit the clamp:mgh= ½ mv^2

m = mass of the weightg = gravityh = Initial heightv = final velocity

Calculations (continued)

Torque (rotational motion): To calculate the number of revolutions the remote control car’s tires would turn before popping the balloon. T=(r)(F)(sin(theta))

Conservation of linear momentum: To calculate the amount momentum the weight had when it hit the clamp. F=(d/dt)(mv)

Conclusion

We had minor difficulties coming up with ideas at the beginning but in the end we accomplished everything we set out to from the beginning.

We had 2 people.
