The December speaker was Laura Zahm who gave an excellent
talk titled “Albian Cyclic Shelf Tidal Bar Complexes of the Upper Glen
Rose 'D' Formation, Alabama Ferry Field”. The
January speaker will be John Stroud who will talk
on the Williston Basin and the Bakken Shale. Get
your reservations in early so the Petroleum Club
can have an accurate count for seating. Morris
Nichols has lined up a full slate of speakers
through May, but if you have a good suggestion
for next year (2012-13), email it to me and I will
forward it to next year's Program Chairman. The
February meeting will be on the evening of
February 17. Kevin Hill will again present a geology and wine tasting
event.
A Message from
the President
Dan Scurlock
I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year. The holiday
and hunting seasons are coming to a close and it's time to get back to
work. In early 2010, oil futures were in the mid $70s and gas was nearly
$6. In 2011, oil was over $90 and gas over $4. As of this date, January
2012 oil is still over $90 but gas is now around $3.
The Shreveport Geological Society has nominated Bill Meaney
to the governor's office to be appointed to serve on the Louisiana Board
of Professional Geoscientists. This board was created by the state
legislature to oversee the registration of geoscientists. It is my
understanding that those in the oil and gas industry are exempt from the
registration requirement.

If you have any news or announcements for society members that needs to be put on the website or newsletter, contact Kevin or Rachel Hill. Go to the SGS website at any chance you get and see what's new.
The SGS/ALTAPL Christmas Party on December 8 at the Petroleum Club was well attended. Attendance was estimated at 150 to 175. Many toys were collected by the Salvation Army and $1672.00 was donated at the door. Trae Milam did a great job as our Entertainment Chairman.
In closing, I would like to share a quote I recently read in the Shreveport Times that was credited to Henry Kissinger. He is quoted as saying “To be absolutely certain about something, one must know everything or nothing about it”.

John Stroud
John Stroud received a B.S. in geology from
Texas A&M in 2008 and an M.S. in geology from
Colorado School of Mines in 2010. His graduate
research began as a broad study of unconventional
petroleum geology before becoming focused on the
Bakken petroleum system and the lower Lodgepole
Formation. John's involvement in the petroleum
industry began in high school when he worked
summers as a geo-tech for various independents in Shreveport, LA.
While at Texas A&M, John worked in the core repository at the
Integrated Ocean Drilling Project where he assisted the curator with
ongoing research projects. After college, he began an internship with
Unit Petroleum in Houston, TX where he mapped fault blocks in the
Wilcox trend. He continued working at Unit part-time through
graduate school. After graduating, John joined Whiting Petroleum
where he continues to work on the Bakken and lower Lodgepole
Formations.
Abstract
“The Williston Basin: The Bakken and Beyond…”
In April 2008 the USGS estimated that the Bakken petroleum
system in the US Williston Basin in Montana and North Dakota
contains about 4 billion barrels of technically recoverable resource.
Recently, some operators have estimated recoveries of over 20 billion
barrels. Assuming actual recoveries fall between 8 and 18 billion
barrels, the Bakken is comparable to Prudhoe Bay Field. Since its
discovery in 1953, the Bakken has been through several cycles of
drilling as technology has improved. The current cycle was begun with

the discovery of Elm Coulee Field in 2000 and was expanded and extended with the discovery of Parshall Field in 2006.
The formation produces high-gravity oil from a tight, argillaceous carbonate sandwiched between two source rocks. The reservoir is characterized by low porosity and permeability, variable mineralogy, high oil saturation, overpressure and abundant bed-scale fracturing. With few exceptions, wellbores must be hydraulically fractured to achieve economic production rates. The upper and lower shales that encase the reservoir are world-class source rocks with average TOCs around 12%. These mudstones are not only the Bakken's source rocks, but also form a regional seal and fracture barrier.
The Bakken play has pushed the Williston basin into the forefront of the domestic energy industry; however the Bakken is neither the best model for unconventional exploration, nor the only target in the basin. The Bakken play is really several plays within the same stratigraphic unit with each play working for different reasons. Additionally, there are at least 10 other significant oil reservoirs within the basin. Given the high rate of acreage consumption in the area, operators cannot dismiss these other reservoirs with potential resource additions. This realization has led companies to begin testing the Three Forks, Pronghorn, Scallion, False Bakken, and Lodgepole at sites around the basin. Continued technological development, coupled with creative thinking and flexible paradigms, will ensure continued success in developing this incredible resource.

Scholarship is now available online at The
deadline to apply is Friday, April 13, 2012. In honor of the
announcement, we've collected notes from past scholarship recipients
who were happy to talk about how the SGS helped with their educational
pursuits. We hope you'll keep this in mind when you're donating to the
scholarship fund, and that you'll spread the word to as many students as
may benefit from an SGS scholarship. If you would like to contribute to
the SGS Scholarship Fund, please contact Scholarship Chairman Gary

“The SGS scholarship has been most beneficial to me by cutting the cost of attending the university to complete my Ph.D. research. In addition to working through my dissertation research, I am currently taking two courses (3D Seismic Interpretation and Geodynamics) this semester to continue to broaden my knowledge base in the geosciences. The scholarship directly helped me with the cost of textbooks for those courses. Additionally, the greatest portion of the scholarship goes to helping cover university fees that are incurred each semester. As a supported graduate student, tuition is paid for five years. Unfortunately, each semester about $1,000 in fees (library fees, recreation center fees, etc.) are incurred for all students, which graduate students must either pay out of pocket or take out loans to cover. With a fall and spring semester each year, and some summers working as a research assistant in order to complete field work, these costs can add up to about $12,000 at the end of a graduate career (two years master's student, three years Ph.D. Student). For someone who tries to live without incurring debt, this is a large number. I am truly grateful to the Shreveport G e o l o g i c a l S o c i e t y f o r helping with these areas of c o s t s t h a t s u p p o r t e d u n i v e r s i t y g r a d u a t e students must pay out of pocket.

Brandon Lutz of the University of Alabama wrote in October
that he would use the first half of his scholarship from the Shreveport
Geological Society to attend the annual Geological Society of America
meeting in Minneapolis, where he planned to take a course in Arc-GIS
and share his research ideas with others in his field.
“There is a special session on the Basin and Range Province,
and numerous geologists conducting research similar to mine will be
there giving talks and presenting posters,” Lutz said. “I am looking
forward very much to speaking with these people in person and sharing
my ideas.”
He already had great plans for the coming year to continue
progressing his studies.
“The other half of the (SGS) funds will go toward my next field
session in Death Valley, California this December,” Lutz said. “I need
to do some mapping and sample collections in order to continue my
thesis research.”
