Holidayat homeby design

This original design with Bali stylingand materials caters for every family’svision of a holiday dream home, according to the judges.

They noted its indoor-outdoor bar, coconut poles, racked timber ceilings, and bi-fold doors that open fromliving and dining areas to the patio.

Creating a private haven with“tropical Australian” styling and theatmosphere of a luxury resort was theambition of the owners.

Moya and Rob Mulvay workedwith the builder Mark Mulvay (Rob’sbrother) and designer GaryHardman, of Dolphin Design andDrafting, to translate their dreamsinto reality.

Moya said creating a home thatsuited their needs and lifestyle wasthe guiding principle.

They wanted to feel comfortableand relaxed, with spaces to call theirown as well as areas to entertainindoors and outdoors.

The result is a warm, welcominghome with abundant natural light, lots of rich timber, splashes of boldcolour and a unique layout.

Built on a big corner block, withdouble garages on each elevation, thehome has plenty of street appeal.

It surrounds a sheltered atriumwith a raked, cedar-lined ceiling. Afreestanding pavilion is supported bycoconut poles and has kapur decking.

Both features are set amid exoticgardens with timbered bridges, tranquil water features and beds ofdecorative pebbles.

The couple had a container ofconstruction materials and decoratoritems imported from Bali to completethe casual look.

Incorporating two sitting areas thatalso serve as home theatres reflectedthe couple’s lifestyle. Moya likes torelax in “her” space while Rob canwatch his favourite Foxtel programswith a few friends in “his”.

Both rooms have generousproportions, coffered ceilings anddirect access to the atrium, creatingthe perfect venue for entertaining.

At the front, the main suite is aprivate oasis, with park views andcedar-and-glass doors to a courtyardwith a cedar-lined gazebo, kapurdeck and frangipani water feature.

Shoji screens open to the spaensuite and a deep walk-in robe istucked behind a long wall.

In the lofty foyer, slim coconutpoles and a deep-red feature wallprovide drama.

In the main living zone, a sittingroom and dining area wrap aroundtwo sides of the atrium, with bi-folddoors opening to eliminateboundaries.

The well-designed kitchen hasmodern stone and glass finishes.

A wide passage leads to thespacious home office, which has twosmall windows high in its externalwall and an internal panel facing thealfresco area.

The passage continues past abathroom and powder room to the

minor bedrooms and the secondsitting area.

The indoor-outdoor bar is tuckedout of the way, with its benchtopextending out to the alfresco spaceand bi-fold windows opening wide tocreate a servery.

Two double garages provide spacefor cars and a boat, with a separatestoreroom and storage space in a loft.
