Retail System Installations
System SolutionsBuilding on the company’s strengths in IP
streaming, these products offer future-proof
options to simultaneously deliver QAM signals to
digital TV sets, while also delivering IP video to
computer networks and displays. Blonder Tongue’s
system solutions accept SD, HD, UHD MPEG-2,
H.264, or H.265 content with source delivery via
satellite, internet, a private network or CDN.
Virtual Video Showroom Blonder Tongue’s Virtual Video Showroom (VS) supports all video resolutions, from SD to 4K/UHD, encoded in MPEG-2, MPEG-4 (H.264) and HEVC (H.265) formats. It can distribute video over an existing RF coax network or over an IP network to a single TV or an entire wall of TVs – there is no limit to VS scalability. The VS is ideal for all types of retail applications that leverage video content, such as auto showrooms, bars and restaurants, clothing stores, electronic retailers, and more.
4K is one of the latest CATV buzzwords. It has a resolution of approximately four times what the current 1080 resolution is, (1920x1080 vs 4096x2160). With this new standard, information on each frame will require a new type of modulator.
Blonder Tongue’s 4K modulator takes in up to four data streams from a GigE IP input. Sources can be computer servers, satellite, private networks, or other 4K video sources. The modulator takes the data and modulates each program onto individual, adjacent QAM RF channels. A single combined RF output provides the four QAM channels on one output connector, ready to be combined with other sources in the headend.
Standard CATV distribution delivers the signals to the set-top box or 4K-ready television. If delivering signal to non-4K ready televisions, 4K decoders can be used to convert the signal to HDMI.

Functionality
Blonder Tongue’s 4K modulator will take up to four input signals from IP video on a GigE port. It will produce four QAM signals on a single RF output port. This signal then gets combined with other analog and digital signals in the system for distribution to 4K set-top boxes or compatible TV displays.
TV tuners or set-top converter boxes have limitations, as they are not designed to recognize 8VSB off-air digital signals in the cable channel assignments. In order to mix off-air digital signals with other sources, and maintain lower frequency assignments, transcoding of the 8VSB signal to QAM is necessary.
Blonder Tongue’s AQT8 series of transcoders decodes digital data from the 8VSB carrier. It then encodes the same data onto the QAM carrier. Known as pass-through transcoding, no data manipulation is available during this process; whatever the broadcaster sends on 8VSB is carried over to the QAM signal.
The AQT8-QAM provides one RF output port with eight QAM signals on it, and combining is done internally. There are two QAM modulators creating four adjacent QAM channels each. The user can define the first channel of the four being output for each modulator creating a customized channel-linup. Example: Mod. 1 creates channels 2, 3, 4, and 5; Mod. 2 creates channels 23, 24, 25, and 26.
Functionality
Most TV tuners only accept 8VSB-format signals in the off-air frequency range, which can be a much different frequency from the cable channel of the same number. Example: off-air channel 14 = 473 MHz, cable channel 14 = 123 MHz. In order to mix the off-air signals and local digital content or cable signals, transcoding from 8VSB to QAM format is required. Then all channels can follow the cable format numbering scheme.
Digital off-air signals are sent from the broadcaster in a format known as 8VSB. The native digital format for cable television is called QAM. In order to mix off-air signals with cable signals or locally generated digital signals, the 8VSB signal must be converted (transcoded) from 8VSB to QAM.
Off-Air Content Delivered via QAM/RF
4K resolution is still very new in the television industry. So new, in fact, that not all “4K capable” televisions can actually receive the 4K signal directly from IP video sources. In this case, a set-top converter box is required to receive the 4K signal and convert it to something the television can understand. HDMI is the format used to send the signal from the set-top converter box to the TV.
Functionality
For televisions that cannot directly receive 4K resolution IP video signals, a set-top converter
box is required to convert the signal to HDMI, a signal that the television understands.
Blonder Tongue’s HDDM (High-Definition Decoder Module), is a high-quality HD or SD
decoder that supports both
MPEG-2 and H.264 video
streams. When paired with
Blonder Tongue encoders,
it can provide a valuable
end-to-end IP video delivery
solution. The HDDM supports
both IGMPv2 and IGMPv3
protocols, which allows
flexibility when configuring
your IP network.

Blonder Tongue’s AQT8-IP takes digital information off of the incoming 8VSB (off-air) or QAM (cable) signals, and transcodes it into an IP format video stream. The AQT8 does this by adding specific headers or wrappers around the data blocks, so they can travel on the IP network, and be identified at the receiver as IP video.
Unlike standard cable TV systems, with amplifiers, splitters and taps, IP networks rely on switches and routers to distribute the signals. Switches and routers must have specific features enabled in order to properly send IP video without traffic congestion. IGMP Snooping, IGMP Querier, and IP multi-casting must be enabled on switches and routers in the IP network to accomplish this.
The AQT8-IP sends out the IP video in a multi-cast format, meaning it sends one copy of the video out to the network, and any receiver, computer or set-top box that wants to view that video will point to the same multi-cast IP address that the transcoder is sending out on. Routers and switches that have the proper features enabled, will only pass the video stream to the receivers that request it. That way, only one copy of the video stream is on the network, and it only goes to where it is requested, drastically cutting down on IP traffic.
Functionality
It is becoming more common for TV signals to be delivered over an IP network. With the proliferation of network IP outlets, video signals can be delivered anywhere on the network.
Blonder Tongue’s AQT8-IP will take in any 8VSB (off-air) or QAM (cable) signals and transcode them to an IP format, ready for distribution across an IP network. Then any computer or IP set-top box can plug into any network connection on the network and view the IP video signals.
