Isitmeordidthismonthliterallyjustwhizrightpast?Iamcertainlyreadyforspring,andIthinkweareallreadyforsomestabilityhere,weatherorotherwise.Onethingwecancountonisaplethoraofactivitiesandconcertstonourishandsateourrecorder-playingcravings.Don'tforgettoscrollallthewaydowntothebottomofthisnewslettertogettotheever-growingcalendarofevents.Evenifyoudon'thavetimetotakeitallinnow,youcanstarthemessageandreturntoitlater.

ForourplayingsessiononMarch3rd,I'dliketostartwithtwo5-partmadrigalsbytheDanishcomposerMogensPedersøn:“EccoLaPrima-vera”heraldingthespringand“SonvivoenonsoVivo”abouttheconflictsoflivingalifewithoutlove.BothcomefromthecollectioncalledMadrigaleacinquevocifrom1611,publishedafterPedersøncompletedhisstudiesinVenicewithGiovanniGabrieli.WewillthenmoveontoplayoneofmyfavoritepiecesbyLassus,“LaudatePueriDominum,”whichisastunning7-partpiecewrittenattheheightofLassus'mastery.Noconnectiontospringotherthanthatitisupliftingandbeautiful.ThenI'dliketoendtheeveningwithmovementsfromTelemann'sdelightfulWaterMusicsuiteinCmajor.LookingbackatmynotesIseethatweplayeditin2009,soIthinkitcanstandtoberevisited.EveryoneisfamiliarwithHandel’sWaterMusicsuites,andTelemann’sworkbythesamenameisequallyrewarding.HandelandTelemannhadamutualadmirationforeachother,andTelemannnevermissedanopportunitytotraveltoaneventthatwouldreunitethem.

TheUniversityofWashingtonLibrariesSingershasbeenacherishedtraditionforover35yearsinSeattleanddrawsfromtalentedLibrariesstaffwholovetosing.
Recentlythesingersperformedwithotherstaffandinvitedmusicianswhoplayedrecordersandviols.Thiswonderfulgroupistheresultofthatcollaboration.
WebringyouadelightfulconcertwithmusicinspiredbythewritingsofWilliamShakespeare(1564-1616):incidentalmusic,lovesongs(ofwhichmanyhavebeenwritten!),andmadrigals.ProgramselectionsincludemusicperformedinorinspiredbyplayssuchasAMidsummerNight'sDream,AsYouLikeIt,andTheTempestcomposedbyDowland,Morley,Arne,andothers.Wehopeyouenjoyit!

Forthoseofyouwonderingwhatamasterclassis,itissimplyafancynameforan“open”lesson.Thereisastudent(theactiveparticipant),ateacher,andanaudience(theauditors).Thebeautyofamasterclassisthatitisawin/winsituationforauditorsandparticipantsalike,becauseeveryoneisarecipienttothesameinstruction!Auditorswhoarenot“performing”learnatremendousamountbyfollowingalongwiththeteachingandlearningprocessofsomeoneelse'slesson,withoutthedistractionofgettingnervous.Itisafascinatingwaytoabsorbinformation,beitconfirmationofwhatyoualreadyknow,orintroductiontosomethingnew—aninvitationtolookatthingsthroughadifferentlens.Pleasejoinusforthisinvigoratingdayandhelpcheeronyourfellowplayers!

SeveralfolksfromSeattle(MikeWoolf,SusanBurris,EllisHillinger,SusieKeithly,andMollyWarner)attendedthisone-dayworkshopentitled“ItMightAsWellBeSpring.”Ittookplacefrom9:15am-4:30pmatSt.Paul'sEpiscopalChurchinBellingham.DebbieMcMeelwasoneoftheprimemoversingettingitgoing.PhilandGayleNeumanandLauraKuhlmanweretheinstructors.
Aboutthirtypeople
attended,comingfromvariouscornersofBritishColumbiaandWashington.Forthemostpart,thedaywasorganizedintolarge-groupplayingwiththethreeinstructorsrotatingpiecestheyhadchosen.InonesessionwesplitintothreegroupswithGayleinstructingthestringplayers,Philthehistoricalwinds,andLauraalltherest;anothersectioninvolvedanintroductionto
bagpipesbyLaura.Thethemewas“ItMightAsWellBeSpring,”withmuchofthemusicfromtheRenaissanceperiodbuiltaroundtheideaofspringandlove,butwealsoventuredintothe20thcenturywithpiecesbyRichardRogers.ManyofthearrangementshadbeendonebyPhil.EdMcMeelprovidedadeliciouslunch,withentertainmentprovidedbytwoyoungbrothers,studentsofDebbie's,whoplayedfamiliarRenaissanceairsongarkleinorbassclarinettoDebbie'sdrumaccompaniment.
Theeveningbroughtawell-attendedconcertinthemainsanctuary
withPhil,Gayle,andLauraplayingahostofdifferentinstruments(mostbuiltbyPhilandGayle),playingasatriooraccompanyingGaylewhohasagorgeous,lightsopranovoice.Theacousticstherewerefabulous!Thankstoallwhoorganizedthisfineday!

Ah,theplayingsession!MiyoAokiledusall,includingsomeoftheBackroomGang,infouraccessiblepieces.
Firstwehadsomefunwithhemiolasinsecularmusic,beginningwithJohnDowland's“TheEarlofEssexGalliard”inthevocalversion,“Cansheexcusemywrongs.”Thedancewaswrittenin3/2,sixquarternotestothemeasure.While3/2impliesthreegroupsoftwoquartersineachmeasure,itcanalsobedoneastwogroupsofthreequarters,whichwecallahemiola.Thethirdsectionofthemusicfeaturedtheseinabundance,reallytuggingagainstthethree-groupmeasures.Miyohadusallreadourrhythmsvocally,andthenjustthetenorsreadtheirs,whichwasespeciallyoffsetanddifficult.Theothermainideawastokeepthebounceandlightnessofthedance,givingan“up”feeling.
AnotherworkrichinhemiolaswasWilliamByrd's“MyMindtoMeaKingdomIs.”Againwithsixquarterstothemeasure,thisone'smainideawastwogroupsofthree,someasureswiththreegroupsoftwoprovidedmuchinterestasthepartsalternatedbetweenthetwoorganizational(continuedbelow)

schemes.Miyofirstdealtwithourtendencytodragthethree-groupmeasures,andthenhadustryaninterestingtechnique:playeachnoteveryshort,withsilencebetweenitandthenextveryshortnote.Thistrickcangreatlyclarifythewayrhythmsfittogetherinensemblemusic.Finally,Miyocoachedustoplaythestepwisemeasuressmoothly.Theworkfeltjoyful!
WewentontoasettingofPsalm103,“Benedicanimamea,”byFrenchcomposerClaudindeSermisy.MiyotranscribedthislovelyRenaissancepieceforus.Shehadustunetheopenfifththatpervadesthepiece,andpaycloseattentiontointonationthroughout(notetoself:thiscanimprovetheperformanceofprettymuchanywork!).Thepiecealsogaveopportunitiestopracticeatechniqueusefulwhennotesareheldaverylongtime:ratherthanletthetonebegintowaver,stopblowingimmediately.Thenre-enterthenotewiththecorrectbreathpressure,andwithoutanysortofarticulation.Theclosingdeservedsomework,too;itsharmonieshavetheendofthepiecefeelingunfinished,asifanotherpiecehadbeenintendedtofollowitimmediately.Again,intonationwaskey.
Finally,weplayedamovementfromtheRachmaninoffAll-NightVigil,againadaptedforusbyMiyo.It'snotoftenyougetthechancetoplayRachmaninoffonrecorders!HewrotethisforRussianOrthodoxChurchservices,andonlyacoupleofyearsafterhewroteitin1915,sacredmusicwasbannedinRussia.
Thissecondmovement,“PraisetheLord,OMySoul,”madeadmirableuseofthegreat-andcontra-bassrecorders.Itaffordedanotheropportunityto“practicesurreptitiouslyleavingandenteringlongnotes;”Miyotoldusthatthelongdronesareforthesingerstosingagainst.Thepiecealsochangedmeternumeroustimes,including4/2to9/4andback;playershadtopaycloseattentiontotheconducting,whichhadbeencarefullyprepared.Theslow-moving,meditativeworkwasabeautifulclosetotheevening.Thankyou,Miyo!
