During his sadly short life, Gibbons composed in almost every important genre of the day, including sacred and secular vocal music as well as instrumental pieces for con- sort and keyboard. He was the youngest of three composers whose keyboard music was published in Parthenia, the first book of keyboard music printed in England (the others being William Byrd and John Bull). He also published the first book of English consort music to be printed using engraving instead of movable type (the Fantazies of III parts). February 2 2018

March 2 2018 April 13 2018 May 11 2018

As our members entered the parish hall of the Maple Leaf Lutheran Church for our first meeting of the New Year they found the chairs arranged not in our normal concentric half-circles but in an open V formation with four rows of chairs each Whats going on Vicki Boeckman had reorganized the seating for a double choir piece in rows for each SATB choir with sopranos in front and basses in back

There was no opening concert this month so after announcements those who wished to play under Miyo Aokis gentle hand in the Back Room trooped down the hall with her and the rest of us reorganized ourselves as Vicki directed I need more tenors for Choir Two Who are my sopranos for Choir One Would one of you altos volunteer to switch to soprano Thank you Finally she was satisfied with the balance and we tuned

This is the Deutches Magnificat Meine Seel erhebt den Herren by H Shuumltz Vicki explained It was originally for two choirs with sackbuts cornettos and strings written without bar lines The composer wrote it when he was in his 80s This modern version was produced by Nimura in Japan who has edited many works for recorders This was a gorgeous piece that alternated between duple and triple time with wonderful tone painting My soul magnifies the Lordand holy is his name Repetitions illustrated the word magnifying while the word strong was emphasized by agitated music Choir Two would echo Choir One Vicki pointed out in the various sections how the music and the words were intimately tied together - most of our parts did not have the words in-cluded so the explanation was very helpful We worked our way through all 160 measures then played the whole piece through from start to finish Look for this on YouTube Vicki suggested there is a wonderful version done in Denmark with the original instruments sackbuts and cornettos

Following the Magnificat we rearranged our chairs back into our normal concentric half-circles altos in back of sopranos on one side of the center aisle and basses in back

of tenors on the other side Vicki passed out the next piece - Five Variants on Wonderous Love by Eric Haas Those of you who may have stopped in at the Von Huene Workshop in Brookline Massachusetts or attended the Boston Early Music Festival will have met Eric a kind and practical man who will sell you just the right recorder a baroque flute a piece of music or a music stand He has also been composing for recorder orchestra the Recorder Orchestra of Puget Sound played this piece a couple of years ago and I was quite happy to play it again Wondrous Love is a lovely old shape-note tune which we first played in unison Its a hexatone scale with neither a major nor a minor minor third in it Vicki explained quite sexless The piece has both an old and a new feel to it For one of the middle versions Vicki slowed the tempo way down for sight-reading as it was a very black section filled with 32nd notes After a fair amount of practice we played it through from beginning to end Wonderful

Heres something fun to end with Vicki passed out the music to Handels Halleluia chorus arranged in C Major for SATB recorders by Stan Davis Of course we all were familiar with this piece which made the sight reading and the en-semble work a lot less of a challenge than the previous two pieces But it was fun - and we were required to use our baroque articulation

Miyo reported afterwards that the Back Room Gang had worked on a setting of Drive the Cold Winter Away and a three-part sinfonia by Rossi They finshed their session by reading Isaacs In Meinem Sinn which they will work on again She said that everyone is coming along nicely and some of the participants said how much they enjoy working with Miyo

The evening ended with refreshments good conversations and the opportunity to look through SRSs music library Thanks so much to everyone who helped with cleanup We look forward to seeing everyone in February
