Assessment Objective 3
Joe Holland
Overview
• Private – Local Businesses
• Public – Provided by the government
• Voluntary – Parents or Volunteers
Private Sector
The private sector provides sports facilities and services which are run to make a
profit, not by the government, and can be on a local, regional or national level.
Private Sector
• The private sector is run by businesses who aim to make good profits from providing those sport facilities.
• Facilities are typically of a high standard and are at the upper end of the price range.
• Need membership to attend (costs anything between £35-£1000, depending on the facilities and the sport)
• Over 4,400 private sports centres in the UK.
• 1,982 of those are private health and fitness clubs. These gyms have around 6.1 million consumers a year.
• Celtic Manor Resort charges £750 a year to be a member of two of its 18-hole golf course.

• CrossFit is part of the private sector because it does not rely on government funding and any money it makes remains in the business.
• It uses its own revenue to pay taxes and salaries within the business.
Public Sector
Public Sector
• They provide for the socially excluded who are unable to join clubs or pay commercial rates.
• The public sector provides sports facilities and services which are funded by the government, which can be on a local, regional or national level.
• Examples could include a local swimming pool/sports centre or a local park where football matches are played.
Ashleigh Road Golf
• A small 10 hole golf course is located next to Ashleigh Road playingfields.
• The course has no handicaprequirements so it is ideal for beginners of all ages and those who just want to have some fun.
• The quality of the course is moderate. Obviously it is not the same quality as professional courses where you might need to pay for membership etc.

• One Round: Standard £4.70, Concession £3.35,

• Golf Ball Purchase: £0.50
Voluntary Sector
Voluntary Sector
• The voluntary sector provides sports facilities and services which are non-profit making and are usually run by unpaid helpers or volunteers.
• They often use public sector facilities and can get sponsorship from private sector organisations.
• Examples could include a local cricket team or tennis club.
• Voluntary clubs are often free, but may need some funding from the participants in order to buy kit and/or pay the public sector to use their training facilities.
• This is a small amount such as £10 a month.
• Some kit may be provided by sponsors.• Some money may be funded from the
main club.
Dunvant RFC Youth
• Dunvant RFC’s wide range of youth teams are perfect examples of the voluntary sector.
• From under 6’s under 19’s, none of the coaches get paid, and are usually parents.
• Depending on the age group, different sponsors pay for the kit in return for their name and logo on the shirt.
All three sectors link together!
Private
Public
Voluntary
V uses the PU facilities to train and play. E.g. West End FC train on the pitches in Townhill.
PR may receive funding to allow the
V section to use the facilities. E.g. a
gym is given a grant to introduce
weightlifting.
PR may allow people to enter for a low price on promotional offers. E.g. Ashleigh road in the summer charge
£1 to use the astroturf.
