New orderA new breed of regional business leaders is being born. Their mission: to stimulate new economies,
create fresh markets and break down cultural and geographic barriers.
Regional business and its forward-thinking leaders have long recognized the importance
of innovation and the critical role in plays in economic development. MENA’s transition
towards a knowledge-based, diversified economy with reduced reliance on oil will
depend on its progress and growth in entrepreneurship, technology and
innovation.
Around the world, a wave of peer-to-peer, access-driven businesses is
shaking up established markets. Whether borrowing goods, renting homes, or serving up micro-skills in exchange for access or money, consumers are showing a robust
appetite for the sharing-based economy.
Today, the sharing economy together with the digital revolution are driving economic diversification efforts
across the region. But technologies are only as good as the political and social context in which they are
employed.
A sharing economy is intrinsically borderless. The new generation of business leaders is breaking down geographic, cultural and tribal barriers by opening opportunities and access to products and services to build social solidarity, economic prosperity and sustainability.
MENA’s economies are in the midst of a collision between technological breakthroughs, resource dependency challenges as well as social, political and demographic shifts. These colliding forces are shaping new business models that challenge the current concentrated monolithic private sector dominance by few.
XX’s research on economic multipliers and current trends in the employment of nationals show there is a “sweet spot” where regional strengths, economic impact and nationals’ employment preferences meet, allowing all three factors to be achieved — our New Markets business represents the majority of sectors that fall into the economic sweet spot.
Now our task is to build a movement to harness the power of the shared economy within and outside these sectors to drive economic diversification across MENA in different ways. This is the new order of New Markets.
