She is smart. Articulate. And remarkably self-assured. She has a manner that is mature, grounded
and thoughtful, a perspective that is global and other-focused and a deep passion for making the
world a better place. She values learning, friendship, faith and fun.
A Marymount graduate has the knowledge, skills and confidence to excel at top-tier universities.
She has the compassion and creativity to make a difference in her community. She is both exceptionally
poised and poised for excellence—ready to lead, wherever life takes her. There is no mistaking
a Marymount graduate. She’s the one helping, in her own unique way, to set the world on fire.PO

Academic excellence above all. Marymount students develop an intellectual life—a talent for critical
thinking and a passion for learning that sustains them through college and well beyond. Rich in math,
science and the humanities, equally grounded in the timeless and the technological, our curriculum
prepares young women for admission to the most selective universities—and to stand out once they’re
there. Marymount students’ SAT and ACT scores exceed the national averages. Girls here take a minimum
of six courses each semester and choose from among 17 AP and 10 honors courses. More than 80
of our courses are certified by the University of California. Each student receives individualized college
counseling based on her particular skills, personality and goals, helping to ensure she is admitted
to a college that is just right for her.

A culture that asks girls to step up. Our communities, corporations and governments are crying outfor innovative, ethical leaders with a global vision and an unshakable commitment to the common good.At Marymount, we treat every girl as an emerging leader. We cultivate leadership and character throughinstruction designed specifically for girls. We augment the high expectations of our academic program withleadership-development initiatives like mentoring and a speaker series that brings accomplished womento our campus. We spark an awareness of the world outside Los Angeles through our curriculum andthrough a growing global network of over 19 schools. We give every girl the opportunity to practice leadership in a variety of settings—in the classroom, on the playing field, on stage and in dozens of student-led clubs and activities. When a girl leaves Marymount, she is keenly aware of her role in defining the future and equipped with the skills, confidence and moral grounding to lead the way.

A signature emphasis on compassion, faith and justice. Success at Marymount is not defined by being the best in the world—it’s about being the best for the world. That’s why faith and service are fundamental to the Marymount experience. A Marymount girl benefits from the strong foundations in education, service, leadership and character development that only a Catholic, independent schoolcan provide. Students here learn that the highest purpose of an education is to serve others. They volunteer in their communities and abroad. They consider how the choices we make as a society affectthe most vulnerable. They reflect on their own circumstances and learn to live “lives of gratitude.” Marymount students are encouraged to explore faith as a foundation for service and learn how to defineand articulate their beliefs in a compassionate and thoughtful manner. Opportunities for contemplationare integrated into daily school life and across the curriculum. Girls leave Marymount with an abidingcompassion, a strong connection to their spiritual selves and a contagious enthusiasm for making the world a better place.

A time-tested pedagogy specifically for girls. “Girl Power” was probably not a phrase the Religiousof the Sacred Heart of Mary used when they founded Marymount Los Angeles in 1923. But it was at the heart of their mission nonetheless and remains at the center of Marymount’s mission today. Our instruction is designed expressly for girls and based on the most up-to-date understanding of how they learn, grow and engage with the world. During an exceptionally formative time in theirlives, our students connect with a peer group of strong, capable young women and are guided by accomplished teachers and mentors. They learn in a challenging, nurturing and supportive environment that prizes mutual success over competition. They explore what it means to be both powerful and female, and confront the complexities of being a woman in the 21st century. Studieshave shown that single-sex education improves tests scores, math and science learning, and achievementin college. Our focus on girls, sharpened over nearly nine decades, is one reason Marymount studentsare striking in their confidence, fearless in their learning and unabashedly themselves.

Each year, approximately 25 percent of our students receive financial aid. Since there are no better spokeswomen for our school than the students themselves, we asked several to describe theirMarymount experience.

Mysheika LeMaile-Williams ‘88 Medical Director and Assistant Health Commissioner,Columbus Public Health“Whenever I address the community, I rely on the skills I learned at Marymount – confidence, discipline and compassion. Marymount is where I was challenged, nurtured and encouraged to strive for excellence. As class vice president at Marymount, I learned to hone and apply my communication and leadership skills. I have utilized these skills again and again in my adultlife; while in the sorority during college, serving as class vice president in medical school, and in my current job when speaking to the media and community members.”
Daniela Taplin Lundberg ’94 Founder/Producer, Red Crown Productions, LLC“Whether it is raising money, sending notes on a script or closing a deal with an actor, I use the same skills in producing movies that I did in carrying out our “Under the Sea” themed prom in 1993. At Marymount, I learned what it was to take responsibility for something and follow throughwith it. I had opportunities to execute on ideas and plans that we as a group were developing. That is exactly what I do day in and day out in my career.”
Loretta Jitner ‘81 Founder & President, Media Matters, Inc. and Pencils for Kids, Inc.“Marymount laid the foundation for my educational path, as well as my new journey in philanthropyas founder of Pencils For Kids, Inc. The RSHM made a commitment to prepare young women to be leaders, and in doing so they have also instilled the firm belief to go out in the world and makea difference… because we can. This is a true gift they have given us, as it is the key to a fulfillingand joyful life. I cannot imagine where my life would be without the influence, guidance, support and love of Marymount… I am blessed.”
Lauren Nalepa ‘02 Systems Engineer, Raytheon“My incredibly unique years at Marymount High School, from essay writing in AP English Languageto managing elaborate productions with the Theater Department, inspired me to reach for the stars. When a group of my friends and I had already completed AP Physics in our junior year, the facultyoffered us the opportunity to investigate our future careers by studying engineering and building a robot in the inaugural Introduction to Robotics and Engineering class. This invaluable experienceinstilled in me the determination to pursue Electrical Engineering in college and follow my dreamsto engineering satellites — truly reaching the stars.”
Women living lives of consequence. The ultimate measure of an education is the caliber of the persona student becomes. Maire O’Keefe Byrne ’91 Owner/Chef, Thyme Café & Market“At Marymount, math was my subject, whereas English always presented more of a challenge. My freshman English teacher taught me techniques that helped me become a better writer. Yearslater, when I opened my restaurant, Thyme Café & Market, I quickly learned to develop techniquesthat would help me cope with many of the issues that did not come naturally to me. I reflected backon the techniques learned at Marymount that allowed me to meet the challenges of a new and difficultsubject matter. I credit Marymount for helping me to appreciate my strengths and weaknesses and to reach my fullest potential.”
