The voice of industry – celebrating years
This month marks the 30thanniversary of the =rst publication ofPlant & Works Engineering magazine(PWE). Since 1981 PWE has had theunique privilege to report on the
many changes in the manufacturingand commercial sectors, andwitnessed the ups and downs ofglobalisation and the consequencesto UK manufacturing andengineering.Although the UK is very di<erent
from 30 years ago, manufacturing isstill responsible for 55% of UKexports and its productivity regularlyoutpaces economic growth. All ofthis helps the UK maintain itsposition as the world’s sixth largestmanufacturing nation - a positionthat PWE has been proudlypromoting since it was established, and will always continue to doso. This anniversary year has givenPWE the opportunity to re>ect onsome of those changes andachievements, but also look to thefuture and the opportunities thatexist in abundance for this highlyinnovative and important sector ofthe UK economy.Happy 30th birthday PWE.

Cost-efficientenclosuresAn Escape Release allows someone trapped inside a
safeguarded area to leave and, in doing so, send a stopcommand to thecontroller. However, themachine won’tstop until theemployee isalready at thedoor (where theescape release issited) and bythat time anaccident couldoccur. Safetykeys stop theaccidentoccurring byblocking theinterlock oncethe door isopened. Once all safety criteria are met, the door will still notopen until an employee removes the safety key. Theoperator is therefore kept completely safe while the safetykey is in their pocket.
