RIDING for the DisabledAlice Springs celebrated aspecial horse’s 25th birthdaylast Thursday with a classparty.

Jacko was presented witha carrot cake in the shape ofthe number 25 and a colour-ful card from Acacia HillSchool after the usual ridinglesson.

Special horses and ponieslike Jacko are the heart andsoul of the RDA riding pro-gram, so the dedicatedcoaches, handlers, trainers, riders and volunteers takeevery opportunity to show

their appreciation for theirfurry friends.

RDA horses and poniesmust be fit and healthy andmust also have particularattributes for this specialis-ed work.

The intense training in-volves desensitising thehorse or pony so its intuitiveflight response is not acti-vated in stressful situations,as well as familiarising itwith equipment such aswheelchairs.

Each horse or pony isselected to meet differentabilities and the particular

needs of the riders it will beservicing.

RDA coaches, handlersand trainers also like toknow the history of thehorse or pony to ensure theyhave a good understandingof what is required whentraining.

Each of the RDA’s horsesand ponies are foundthrough advertisements, are generously donated orare on long-term free leases.

All the RDA horses andponies are well cared for byeach centre, rider and vol-unteer and are found homesor returned to their ownersonce they retire.
