Hi CenLa Rose Society,
October was a busy month! We had a
very successful time at Kent House Herb
Day demonstrating the “Not-so-Secret
Secrets to Rooting Roses”. I still have
my quart Ziploc with the ‘G. Nabonnand’
cutting sitting on my carport wall. It’s looking good, and I’m
just waiting for those little white roots to start showing. A lot
of our members were there to answer questions and Clyde
Bartlett shared his rooting tips to interested crowds in 3
separate demonstrations!
I am happy to announce that our Rose Show was also a big
success! I owe a big Thank You to Billie Flynn for acting as
Rose Show Chairman. And, with the help of our members, it
all came together and filled up with beautiful roses! The
Queen Hybrid Tea was awarded to Floyd and Tina Hebert
for their beautiful “Randy Scott”. After lunch, we had a
special presentation of the Bronze Honor Medal award to
our very deserving member Forrest Peil for his outstanding
service to the Central Louisiana Rose Society. It couldn’t
have been a better day!
I think we all agreed that the Main Street Community Center
was an ideal location for our rose show. So, in order to use
the facility again this spring I reserved it for Tuesday, April
16th. (All weekends being previously booked).
You don’t want to miss our last meeting of 2018. Our annual
Holiday Social is on Sunday, November 11th. We will be
meeting at the Gallery Room and bringing pot luck dishes!
Yum! I’m looking forward to seeing you there!
Kelly Texada
p.s. Don’t forget to make plans to join us in Shreveport for
the Gulf District Mid-Winter Workshop February 8-9, 2019.

The Personal Adornment Award modeled and created by Susan Hathorn was the topic of much conversation.
The new class added to the arrangement section this year was a big hit. Ideas for decorating a hat with roses are already being discussed for next year's
spring show.
First time rose show exhibitor, Angel Milstead from the Shreveport Rose Society, is helped and encouraged by Lynn and Mary. Angel went home with 2 trophies and a new excitement for showing and growing roses.
Karen and Gregory Constant from the Baton Rouge Rose Society were King and Queen of the Austin Roses. Their roses added a beautiful display to the entire room.
Ms Anna Ponthieu surprised everyone with a visit thanks to her sweet son, John. Mr Adam was not able to attend. Everyone asked about him and sent their love.
Another beautiful rose show was enjoyed by rose society members throughout the Gulf District thanks to Cenla Rose Society members. The success of the show was a team effort by members who planned, organized, prepared, unloaded and loaded supplies and displayed their beautiful roses.

Information compiled by CRS editor
Recall what happened in Central LA last year after a hot, dry summer. Rosarians didn’t spray
in the 95+ temperature. The air was dry. Blackspot fungus spores did not germinate. No
problems. But, the spores were not gone. They were not dead. Instead, they were lurking,
waiting for a time when the leaves would stay wet for eight or ten hours. Then it happened.
The welcomed rains came. It rained off and on for a couple of days with nice cloudy days and cool nights. The
summer was over. Within two weeks leaves on every rose bush started to show signs of blackspot. Some
bushes were affected more than others; some lost most of their leaves. The ground was covered with yellow
leaves. Don’t let it happen again this year.
The best way to control blackspot is to spray a contact fungicide plus a systemic fungicide.
Spray the stems, top and underside of all leaves plus the surrounding area.
Contact fungicides such as Mancozeb, Manzate, Daconil or Dithane M-45 kill the blackspot spores
on contact but they do not protect the leaves from spores that germinate tomorrow.
Add a preventative fungicide to your mixture. Preventative fungicides are labeled
as Systemic fungicides such as Honor Guard, ferti-lome/Systemic, Bayer/Disease
Control, Protect the bees. Do not use fungicides with insecticides such as Bayer 3-1.
If possible remove infected leaves from the bush. They will not get better.
Remove leaves on the ground. Maybe you sprayed and killed the fungus spores or just
maybe you missed the underside of one leaf.
Dispose of infected leaves in the trash, not the compost.
Warm, Wet November and December Ideal For Blackspot
November is a beautiful season in Louisiana. Cooler temperatures invites rosarians to walk through the garden
enjoying the vibrant colored blooms while taking stock of plants that did not produce according to expectations.
Corrections to the soil and planting of new bushes are ideal goals to be accomplished in November. Fall is the
best time to transplant potted roses into the ground or refurbish the soil in large potted roses.
Visit the nurseries or big box stores to add a splash of winter and spring color to the rose garden by planting fall
annuals such as snapdragon, pansies, violas, dianthus (Sweet Williams or Pinks as my mom called them) or
petunias….advice from Dr Allen Owings.
Scoop it Up! by BJ Abshire
Most of the time when I buy a rose I put it in a large pot and let it grow a few months. This gives me plenty of
time to evaluate the plant before putting it in the ground.
Sometimes I make up my own concoction of potting mix. I mix together whatever I have on hand...like ready to
use potting mix, soil conditioner, compost, perlite etc. I dump some of each in a large wheel barrow then use a
garden hoe to mix it. I set the pot in the wheel barrow and use a large scoop to fill the pot as I plant the rose
bush. I found the scoop at Home Depot or you could use a large ice scoop from a kitchen supply or make your
own using an empty orange juice jug.

2019 Gulf District Rose Show - Tuesday, April 16, 2019
Before CRS members left the fall rose show they were eager to reserve the beautiful and spacious Pineville
Main Street Community Center for a spring rose show. It was soon realized with the late date for Easter 2019 all
weekends in April 2019 were already booked. After much consideration and discussion it was decided a rose
show during the week was not impossible since most exhibitors and committee members are retired. Therefore,
the beautiful Pineville Main Street Community Center was reserved for the afternoon of Monday, April 15th and
the entire day of Tuesday, April 16th with the hope this will not be too inconvenient for most members.
Prep and lunch area
New District Director Ken Kelley, along with the Gulf District Board, has been busy making plans
