Newsletter, Wednesday 2nd September, Term 3
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Last Friday we celebrated Science Week 2020: ‘The Deep Blue Innovation
for the Future of our Oceans’. Staff and students dressed up as someone or
something related to Science. The day saw a group of Year 6 students host
a morning Science Show, performing cool Science experiments for the Early
Childhood and Middle/Upper Primary students. Each class completed an
activity related to the theme, The Deep Blue Innovation for the Future of our
Oceans, which saw students design and make boats, create ocean
habitats and make art pieces exploring underwater themes. Staff and
students thoroughly enjoyed the activities.
Each school in the NT has an external school review every 4 years. Last
week, our school had a school review and a national tool was used to
cover nine domains/areas regarding the explicit school improvement
agenda, data, learning culture, resources, curriculum, teaching team,
teaching pedagogies, differentiation and partnerships. A school review is a
rigorous process, with reviewers working in the school for 3 days. The
reviewers read school documentation, school data and spoke to the
leadership team, school board members, parents, staff and students.
Our school review report was outstanding. The school is high-outstanding in
each of the nine domains. The lead reviewer informed us that Larrakeyah
Primary is in the top 3% of Australian schools and we should be extremely
proud of our achievements. In fact, the lead reviewer stated that he has
completed more than 200 school reviews and we are the first school that he
has given an outstanding rating for the whole domain on teaching
pedagogy. We are celebrating our success, the long journey and hard work
that has made our school the outstanding school it is today. Our school
community should be very proud. When we receive the final report, we will
place it on the school website.
Regards,
Fathma Mauger
Principal

Defence School Mentor
Week 6 I was able to attend the DSM Workshop at DCO. It was great to hear from various
speakers. One being Padre Ricky from 5RAR of the Tiger Tribe, who gave us a brief insight to
the challenges he and his family faced during his last deployment. Your local padres and
chaplains are another wonderful support resource both physical and spiritually for ADF
families. Another was the visit from therapy dogs. They are used widely within the
community with positive outcomes including veteran groups, schools and libraries. So if
you have a reluctant reader, get them to read to a dog. Calm dogs are non-judgemental
listeners so can help reduce reading aloud nerves and anxieties to make reading fun.
Happy Father’s Day to all our Dads and Grand-dads on Sunday. Due to COVID– 19 we are
unable to hold our annual Defence Dad’s Lunch so instead the children have been busy
making little gifts for their Dads at Defence Kids Club.
Those families that are interested in purchasing a Medallion and having it presented to their
child for being brave on the Home front while a parent was away on Deployment please
let me know so I can try to help organise something special. See Military Kids Recognition at
https://www.opptsd.org.au/shop for the purchase of medallions.
Some families are already receiving posting orders as students are mentioning that they
are leaving. This is already showing some early signs of emotional change in some students
and parents. I understand that many of you have done this multiple times but it is still a
very busy time and difficult to juggle house hunting, school hunting, with big emotions in
little bodies…… There are a number of Farewell activities that the students like to do in the
lead up to their departure to help prepare for the new posting, move and school
mementos. Please let me know of your posting so I can help support your child’s
upcoming transition to a new location as early as possible. Some links to help with the
preparation to move:

Defence Gate Walking Bus has continued this term with students acting as the driver; so
students are showing responsibility for each other, independence of packing their own
bags, and confidence to lead others. If you would like your child to be collected from
class and delivered to the Base/school gate for your pick up on Monday, Tuesday and
Wednesday afternoons please let me know or they can just join the walking bus fun.
If you have a parent currently away on exercise, training or deployment please remind me
and your teacher so we can help support your child and give them that extra TLC if
needed. Currently you can register for Family Absent Support via Defence Family Helpline
1800 624 608 and order a bear and book pack for the kids or let me know you would like a
bear, supply your serving members PM Keys so I can get a bear through the DCO Darwin
branch for you.
