EDUCATION THROUGH CHESS – INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR IN BUCHAREST, ROMANIA
The Romanian Chess Federation organized
together with the National Education
Ministry the "Education through chess"
seminar in Bucharest which was held on
June 4-5, 2013 at the Romanian Academy.
This event was honored by the presence of
the Minister of Education, Mr. Remus
Pricopie, the Deputy Minister of
Education, Mrs. Stefania Duminica, six
members of the Romanian Parliament, two famous members of the Romanian Academy,
managers of education authorities and schools and many chess lovers.
The event was supported by the important contribution of some great friends from
abroad: there were present Boyko Hristov, Press Director of the European Chess
Union and Sergei Bargan, General Secretary of the Moldovan Chess Federation, who
shared during the two days of the seminar their expertize and useful information
from their organizations.
The other contributions were the Garry Kasparov's video message addressed to the
participants and skype live presentations of the President of the European Chess

Executive Secretary of FIDE CIS Commission, Alessandro Dominici - Federal
Instructor, member of the Italian Chess in School Commission.
The organizers have received relevant information regarding chess in schools from
the USA by the courtesy of Mrs. Susan Houston, US Chess, from Mr. Esteban
Jaureguizar, Uruguayan Chess Federation, from Mr. Leo Battesti, France and, of
course, from many Romanian collaborators.
The key support was offered by the Educational Sciences Institute of Romania, the
national authority in the field of educational system curriculum.
The organizers concluded that the seminar was extremely useful in achieving its
goals, thanked everybody who supported the event and expressed hopes to improve
in the near future the developing of chess in Romanian schools.

Delia Duca (left), a chess player representing Romania at several championships for
problems solving, ranked VI-th at the last National Championships for problems
solving, was crowned Miss Universe Romania 2012, has a master degree in computer
science and works as a software engineer.

BIDDING PROCEDURE FOR ECU COMPETITIONS IN 2015
In the Circular Letter No. 1/2013
European Chess Union published the
Invitation for Bids for the competitions
in its calendar in 2015. You can find
complete documentation and more
details on the website in the section
"Resources – Bidding Procedure".
All the bids must reach the ECU office by 01 July 2013, 4 p.m. (CET). According to
the decision of the European Chess Union Board, competitions related to national
federations – members of the European Union or other groups of countries (EU
Youth Championship, EU Individual Championship, Mitropa Cup) will not be part
of the calendar of the European Chess Union, nor will there be any bidding
procedure open for them.
In addition, these competitions will be excluded from the existing bidding procedure
for 2015 and no bids for them will be collected.

THE SPANISH WOMEN CHAMPIONSHIP AND THE SPANISH
RAPID CHAMPIONSHIP WILL BE INTERNATIONAL OPEN
TOURNAMENTS IN 2013
The historic Chess City of Linares will be the
venue of a big Chess Festival this summer. Five
Spanish Chess Championships: Individual,
Women, and Rapid, as well as the Teams:
Primera Division (“First League”) and Division
de Honor (“Honor League”), will be held in
Linares from August 19th until September 14th.

Both the Women and the Rapid Chess Championship will be played consecutively
and will be open for any foreign player.
The Women Championship will be played by Swiss system (9 rounds) and will be
valid for norms.

JUGOVIC WINS THE SERBIAN CLUB CUP
‘SVETOZAR GLIGORIC’
The team of Jugovic (Kac) won the Serbian
Club Cup ‘Svetozar Gligoric‘ with the final
result of 20.5 game points. Novosadski ŠK
DDOR was second in the final ranking
with 19.5 game points, while Vodovod
(Kragujevac) won the third place with 18
game points.
The tournament was held from 20-26 May,
2013 in Banja Koviljaca.
The Serbian Club Cup was played in 7 rounds, according to the Swiss system with
time control of 90 minutes for 40 moves + 30 minutes for the rest of the game + 30
seconds increment per move, starting for move one.

GM DAVID NAVARA WINS CZECH CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP
GM David Navara won the Czech Chess
Championship with the final result of 8 points out of
maximum 9. GM Vlastimil Babula finished second
with 5.5 points, whereas GM Igors Rausis was third
with the same result like the second in the ranking.
The Championship was held from 21-29 May, 2013 in
Ledeč nad Sázavou.

IM NINO KHURTSIDZE WINS THE 70TH GEORGIAN WOMEN
CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP
IM Nino Khurtsidze (ELO 2428) won the 70th Georgian Women
Chess Championship with the final result of 8.5 points out of
maximum 11. GM Nino Batsiashvili (ELO 2390) finished
second with 8 points, while IM Salome Melia (ELO 2423) was
third in the final ranking with 7.5 points.
The 70th Georgian Women Chess Championship was held from 27th May to 7th June,
2013 in Tbilisi. Chief Arbiter of the tournament was Margalita Tandashvili.

CROATIA WINS MITROPA CUP 2013
Croatia won the Mitropa Cup 2013 with
the final result of 13 match points.
Germany was second with 12 match
points, whereas the Czech Republic
finished third with 11 match points.
Mitropa Cup was held in Meissen, Germany, from May 31st to June 9th. It is a team
event for ten European federations playing a Round Robin tournament in two
sections, open section and women’s section.

In the open section each team consisted of four players, while in the women’s section
of two women. One reserve player in each team was allowed.

The rate of play was 90 minutes for 40 moves + 30 minutes for the rest of the game
with an increment of 30 seconds per move, starting from move one.
In the open section there were 21 holders of GM title and 19 holders of IM title,
whereas in the women’s section there were 3 holders of IM title and 2 holders of
WGM title.
Mitropa Cup 2013 was organised under the patronage of the German Chess
Federation in cooperation with Umweltgerechte Kraftanlagen GmbH & Co. KG
(UKA).
Mitropa Cup is a European chess tournament, gathering especially strong young
players. It was held for the first time in France, in 2011, and last year it took place in
Croatia. This year the tournament was brought to Germany.

SERGEY KARJAKIN WINS SBERBANK TOURNAMENT

Sergey Karjakin won the Sberbank rapid
tournament with the final result of 6.5 points
out of maximum 9. Veselin Topalov finished
second with 6 points, while Peter Leko was
third with 5 points.
The Sberbank rapid tournament was held from
5-8 June, 2013 in Kiev, Ukraine.
The tournament was a 10-player 9 round-robin event.
The time control was 25 minutes for all moves + 10 seconds increment per move,
starting from move one.

GM Tigran Petrosian (ARM) won the Grand Europe
Albena Tournament with the final result of 8 points out of
maximum 9. GM Mircea-Emilian Parligras (ROU) finished
second with 7 points and a better tie-break than the third
in the final ranking – GM Hrant Melkumyan (ARM).
Grand Europe Albena Open was held from 01-09 June,
2013 in the Black Sea resort Albena, Bulgaria.
Chief Arbiter of the tournament was IA Nikolay Yordanov. One hundred and fifty
chess players took part in the competition.

FORTHCOMING TOURNAMENTS
EUROPEAN INDIVIDUAL WOMEN'S CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP
2013
The 14th edition of European Individual
Women's Chess Championship will take place at
the hotel Metropol in Belgrade, from July 22nd to
August 4th, 2013.
151 players from 30 countries are registered so far
and will compete for the prestigious title.
The top seed is GM Nana Dzagnidze from Georgia, with rating 2550 and apart from
her, there are 7 more players with rating 2500 or higher.
The country with the largest number of participants is Russia, with 37 registered
players, followed by Serbia with 25, and Georgia with 15.
12 holders of GM title, 23 holders of IM title, and 41 holders of WGM title will
compete in this Championship.
It is worth mentioning that two former Women’s World Champions are among the
participants: GM Antoaneta Stefanova (ELO 2531) and GM Alexandra Kosteniuk
(ELO 2489).
The official hotel of the Championship is hotel Metropol, which is located in the very
centre of the city, and you will need only 15 minutes on foot to the main street and
the pedestrian zone – Knez Mihajlova.
European Individual Women's Championship is organised under the patronage of
the Serbian Ministry of Youth and Sports.

European Individual Women's Chess Championship was held for the first time in

2000, in Batumi, Georgia, as a 32-player knockout event. Since 2001 the Tournament
has had a Swiss system format, and apart from a short switch to a 12-round schedule
in 2004-2005, was played with an 11-round schedule.

EUROPEAN YOUTH CHESS CUP 2013
European Youth Chess Cup will take place
in Ureki, Georgia, from 16-26 June, 2013.
The championship will be held in 3
categories for girls and boys (up to 8, 10, 12
years old). The players should fulfill the
conditions that they have not reached the
age of 8, 10 and 12 by January 1st, 2013.
The championship will be played according to the Swiss system in 9 rounds, in
accordance with the ECU Tournament Rules and Fide Rules of Chess. The time
control will be 90 minutes for the whole game with an increment of 30 seconds per
move, starting from move one.
All players and guests are invited to stay in the official hotel of the European Youth
Cup hotel “Kolhida” *** http://kolkhida.ge/. Ureki is a seaside town and a resort on
the Black Sea coast. Black Sea water temperature at this time will be about +28.

(October 2013, Prague – Regensburg – Innsbruck –
Salzburg – Český Krumlov - Prague)
Prague Chess Society and České Dráhy are preparing
another year of the chess tournament associated with a trip
around five beautiful Central European cities.
Chess Train 2013 has chosen the trail Prague – Regensburg (Germany) – Innsbruck
(Austria) - Salzburg (Austria) – Český Krumlov (Czech Republic) – Prague in the
period between 11th and 15th October 2013.
From Friday to Tuesday again, you will have the possibility to play 5 days rapid
chess tournament in a specially launched train and to see several nice towns –
ancient Regensburg, Innsbruck sunk in the Alps, thereafter Mozart´s Salzburg and
also two most beautiful Czech towns - Český Krumlov and Prague.
Tournament regulations
- 13-round rapid chess open tournament by Swiss System
- rate of play: 2x 20 min with increment of 10 s per move
- number of participants limited by the capacity of the train (the organizer decides
about the acceptance based on the order of received applications)
- all games are played in the train
- entry fee 1.490 CZK (60 EUR)
- train ticket 2.990 CZK (120 EUR)
Prize money: 50.000 CZK (2.000 EUR) and other material prizes and services in the
value of at least 50.000 CZK (2.000 EUR).
