I have always loved stories and reading. Many years ago when I was
a pupil at Marshside School I used to write stories. I copied Enid
Blyton’s writing style and described the improbable adventures of
myself and various friends. Occasionally I presented these
unpunctuated reams to teachers who duly read them and passed
kind comments. It was while reminiscing about these adventure
stories that I realised how much I would have liked to attend a
writing club and before I knew what had got into me, I found myself
offering to organise one.
Writing Club has been running for four weeks. This is our
first publication. Due to time constraints, and for the sheer fun of it,
we have looked at fairy tales. The children have used imagination
and humour to depict original plot twists and alternative endings to
familiar tales. Many of the stories are a little gruesome but then
fairy tales often are.
Some of the children, particularly the older girls, are writing
much longer stories which do not feature in this issue. However,
every member of Writing Club has contributed at least one story to
the magazine and many have been involved in the creation of the
original illustrations that accompany their stories.
I’d like to say well done to all of the children and I look
forward to lots more stories and fun after the summer break.
Mrs Bray.

Once upon a time there lived a young girl named Rapunzel.
Rapunzel had been locked in a tower all her life, never to be
let down. She had very long hair, but instead of the hair being
“hair” it was spaghetti!
One day Rapunzel was looking out of the tower when a big
fat man came along.
‘I’m your Prince,’ said the man untruthfully.
‘Then come and rescue me,’ said Rapunzel.
But instead of rescuing her he sprinkled cheese on her
spaghetti hair and ate it all up.
‘Are you a food critic?’ Rapunzel said.
‘She’s on to me,’ he said and ran away.

Once upon a time there lived three little pigs.
One pig built a house from straw. The wolf
came but he had hay fever so he ran away.
The second pig built his house from twigs.
The wolf came, but when he was little he’d had a
splinter, so he ran away from that too.
The third pig built a brick house. When the
wolf came to the brick house the brick dust made
him do a massive sneeze and he died.

Once upon a time Hansel and Gretel were sent into the
forest by their Dad and their Mum and they got lost.
Hansel and Gretel were wondering through the
forest when Gretel bumped into a long stalk.
‘Hey Hansel, look at this.’
‘What?’ Gretel asked curiously.
‘A...mushroom!’ Hansel said in disbelief.
Gretel walked around the mushroom to find a
doorknob. She pulled on it and a witch appeared.
Hansel and Gretel ran to the river and tried to jump
over it. They couldn’t and the witch drowned them.

There once was a beautiful girl named Cinderella who lived
with her step-mum, her 2 ugly sisters and all the cute animals.
Her favourite was an old horse named Bruno. One day the
Prince invited all the ladies in town to a ball. Chloe and
Daphne, the ugly sisters, were squealing with delight.
‘Can I go to the ball too?’ Cinderella asked.
‘If you get all your chores done, yes,’ Molly the step-
mum replied.
Cinderella got all her chores done. ‘I’d better get my
dress ready,’ she said. Then she thought, ‘I don’t really want
to go to the ball. I would like to have another horse for me
and Bruno can have a friend who is the same type of horse.’
Then Chloe came up and started ripping up Cinderella’s
dress. Cinderella ran out of the house as she couldn’t go to the
ball.
‘You will go to the ball my dear, with a flick of my wand.
You will get me a pumpkin and a mouse.’
Cinderella stared at the fairy who had just spoken to
her.
‘I’m your fairy godmother, Fiona. Now go and fetch the
pumpkin and the mouse.’
Cinderella ran around the garden grabbing the pumpkin
and one black mouse. The pumpkin turned into a carriage and
the mouse turned into a beautiful appaloosa.

‘Fairy godmother, I don’t want to go to the ball, but I
want to keep the horse please,’ Cinderella asked in her
sweetest voice. ‘I want to be a famous show jumper.’
‘All right, keep the horse. Her name is Magic Feather.
Look after her well, she was my best friend,’ Fiona said in a
sad voice.
Cinderella jumped onto Magic Feather and galloped
back to the farm.
‘Bruno, I’ve got a friend for you. Her name is Magic
Feather and she will help me win competitions.’
~
10 years later and Cinderella has won many different
competitions on Magic Feather, all 1st
places.
Cinderella and Magic live happily ever after.

I was wondering through the forest blending into the
shadows when I saw a little girl dressed in a scarlet cloak
with a little hood. She spun around, looking around trying
to see where I was. I shot off in the direction that she was
headed – north.
I was hurrying to her Grandma’s house even though
I was surely faster than her. I let myself into her poor old
Grandma’s house. I couldn’t see a thing. I struggled to
find the light. When I did, I saw Grandma, lying on her
bed.
‘She’ll be here in a minute,’ Grandma said. ‘She’s
much stronger than you! Aaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!’
‘Shhh! Sheesh, what is your granddaughter, a
vampire?’ I asked sarcastically.
The door opened behind me.
‘Maybe, maybe not,’ said the little girl dressed in
the red cloak standing in the doorway. ‘Do you believe in
fairy tales? Well you must because you are a talking wolf.’
Red riding blood glided across the floor to me,
faster than any human.
‘Yes...yes, I do believe.’

I was backing toward the door now. She grinned
and then touched the edge of her teeth, two fangs
appeared.
She disappeared.
Then there was something heavy on my back and a
tearing at my neck. Great, I thought.

Once upon a time there was a land called Fantasia. The
people there were all afraid of the dreaded pigeons,
especially one called Evil Alvin. He was the leader of the
underworld of pigeons in their land which was called
Smellymania.
The brave Matthew Upson stepped forward to
guard Fantasia from the dreaded pigeons that ate the
small men who lived there.
One night Matthew Upson was bored while he was
guarding, so he shouted, ‘pigeon.’
The small men of the town ran to the field with
their pitch forks and chainsaws but when they got there,
there was no pigeon and the men were so fired up that
they killed Matthew instead.

One really hot day a Princess came into the Prince’s

John stood watching the half-human, half-wolf figure loom over
him, turning as he stalked around him in a circle. He couldn’t take
his eyes off the huge, hairy creature. Fangs burst from his upper lip
as his brown mouth expanded into a frightening smile.
‘Why are you here?’ the beast snarled.
‘I-I-I travel...’ John stuttered, blind with fear. What was this
thing? ‘I-I-I didn’t mean to in-in-intrude, or-or-or...’
The beast laughed a loud, rumbling noise that almost shook
the ground with its volume. ‘Didn’t mean to intrude?’ he bellowed.
John nodded frantically, silently pleading for mercy. ‘Very well,
leave.’
John’s sigh of relief was highly audible.
‘On one condition.’
‘What?’ John asked, feeling a wave of fear so sickening he
forgot to stutter. Not Belle...Please not Belle...
‘You must give me the first living thing you see on your way
home,’ the beast announced. John had no clue how to react to this
news. Good or bad? He could pick up a flower or...
‘Leave now,’ the beast commanded powerfully, waving to
the huge iron gate. ‘Goodbye.’
The second John was outside his grounds, the beast
slammed the gate forcefully and stamped off into the dark night.
When John looked around, he saw nothing but darkness.
Although he was certain he was surrounded by grasses teaming
with life, he couldn’t see them. The beast wouldn’t be bothered
with them, only something he’d seen. So he strained to see

something. Peering into the distance, John was certain he could see
a light, a lantern. No.
‘Belle!’ he screamed. But it was too late. In the distance the
beast roared.

Belle cowered in fear as the Beast loomed over her, hairy face
contorted into an ugly grimace.
‘Your father promised me,’ he glowered, angry at being
defied by a weak human being no less.
An idea came into Belle’s mind and she sat up.
‘Who is my father to dictate my life?’ she demanded.
The beast blinked.
‘I make my own choices,’ Belle said.
‘But he’s your father.’
