Back to school already! Hello key clubbers! Welcome back from summer vacation hope everyone had an eventful summer and is ready to get back to work. Summer of 2013 was filled with active key clubbers volunteering their time for various organizations and activities. We all appreciate dedicating your time and service. I would also like to welcome the freshman joining our Key Club family as well as other newcomers. Our mission statement this year is “Leadership Through Service.” I believe with our motivation and commitment we can achieve even more than that. You will be able to experience helping others in ways you may have not known. We enjoy helping others and accept any challenge that is given to us. You will get the opportunity to meet new people while gaining community service hours. In this issue I have a quick rundown of summer events, a review about Key Club and getting to know your 2013-2014 Key Club officers. Let’s get ready to make a change and start the school year. Welcome to the K-Family! -Giselle Mulato Bulletin Editor

This year Capital High School Key Club collaborated with our Key Club’s Relay for Life team. Key Club dedicated the team to Coach McDougall who was diagnosed with a brain tumor last September.

Mariah Fore and Giselle Mulato were the Team Captains of our team, Students for Coach McDougall. The experience was unbelievable; everyone devoted their time and donated money to the American Cancer Society.

Congratulations we raised

$1,554 dollars!

SENIOR

Hey Key Clubbers, I am Mariah Fore, your 2013-2014 Treasurer. I am excited to be working beside you this school year to serve our community. I joined Key Club my freshmen year as a way to become involved with school that would also look good on college applications. Since freshmen year, I have been involved in a variety of service projects, such as helping clean up the streets of downtown Olympia, lending a hand to the Food bank and walking myself in circles to help raise money for a cure to cancer. With the experience of being an officer from last year, I am more aware of what needs to be done and how to get them done. Being the Treasurer, I will keep track of our finances and make sure we have enough to keep the fun coming. As a freshman, I was involved in Key Club but never knew why we were there. Once I became more involved my sophomore year, I realized that Key

Club isn't about having a club that would look good on college applications or to be involved with school, it is about serving and caring for your community; to make a difference. Now let’s go out and make a difference together! Your Treasurer, Mariah Fore

Hey Key Clubbers!

My name is Varshi Bachu and I will be your Secretary for this upcoming year. I have been an active member in Key Club since freshman year and I am so delighted to be an officer this year. I originally joined Key Club because I wanted a club that would let me help my community. Not only has it let me make a difference in the community but it has also let me gain leadership skills. While helping my community and gaining new skills I have made new friends. Some of the volunteer events that I have enjoyed are the pumpkin fundraiser, Christmas Forest, and helping out at the local food bank. This year as an officer I will be taking minutes at all meetings and submitting monthly reports to the PNW District. All records and notes will be kept with me so if you couldn’t make it to a meeting I would be the one to ask for the minutes. I hope all of you have a wonderful year and enjoy what Key Club has to offer you.

Hi Key Clubbers I'm Giselle and I will be your bulletin editor for this 2013-2014

school year. I'm very pleased to become an officer my senior year since I've been in key club throughout my high school experience. I first joined Key Club freshman year because I wanted to join a club that meant something, and I knew being involved with key club would look good on applications to colleges. But as years came by I became more involved in different volunteer opportunities, I enjoyed giving up my Saturday morning to go to the food bank, or even tending kids at Christmas Forest. In Key Club I've met new people and have met with different organizations that Key Club sponsors. As bulletin editor I will keep

members notified of upcoming events and remind them what they will sign up for. I will make a newsletter every other month of

activities we've done and members will be able to see themselves in pictures where they volunteered at. I hope Key Club is what you imagine to be and better, hope this year will be a big blowout!

Hey Key Clubbers, my name is Stephanie and I will be serving as your Vice President for the 2013-2014 school year here at Olympia High School. I am thrilled to work hand in hand with future and current members as I begin my Junior year. About 2 years ago when I entered the world of high school, I wanted to do something to make myself part of something bigger. Sports and music were out of the question because of my mediocre skills and other clubs just didn’t really interest me. Then I found Key Club, a global organization where I could use what extra time I had on the weekends to support my community. With my closest friends by my side, I truly created some of the best and funniest memories of my life while doing Key Club activities. From rolling up newspapers at midnight before Thanksgiving to yelling for people to buy roast beef sandwiches at Lakefair, I couldn’t even imagine my life without this amazing club. As Vice President, I will assist the Key Club President and the other officers in their duties to make this club run smoothly. I hope you will join me as I try to make an enjoyable and fun atmosphere as we provide service to our community.

Hey Key Clubbers!

My name is Briana Cruz and I am your 2013-2014 Key Club President! I hope you guys are just as thrilled as I am for this upcoming year. There will be a lot accomplish! I joined Key Club not exactly knowing what is was. Once I got more involved and saw what the club had to offer I knew it was the perfect club for me. I knew it was an excellent way to give back not just to the community but to the world as well. One of my favorite experiences with Key Club was when I got to meet people from all over the PNW in the same exact club at the district convention. It was a great way to celebrate

our accomplishments from that year. As president I will plan service events that everybody is able to attend and make sure all

Key Clubbers are enjoying the service they are offering. To me Key Club means everything! I love what we do and I'm glad I found such a great organization to be a part of.

Hello Key Clubbers!

It is a privilege to be working with you all this year as your Division 38 Lieutenant Governor. I joined Key Club my freshmen year to get more involved in the community and do my part by using my leadership skills to help promote service. What really made Key Club different for me compared to any other service organization is the atmosphere at every service event you go to. You’re surrounded by likeminded people who really want to make a difference and change our world for the better… not just some people who are “forced” to be there just so they can make their college resume more impressive. Service should come from the heart. You should feel gratified for your work after every volunteer event knowing that you made some small difference in a person’s life. Another thing that really sets Key Club apart is the fact that we’re an international organization. In total, we span 34 different countries. This means that we have the opportunity to team up with Key Clubbers from literally across the world to help promote service even more. In fact, one of Key Club International’s largest projects, the ELIMINATE Project, is an international fundraising goal to help eliminate MNT (maternal neonatal tetanus) from the face of earth. To date, along with the help of Kiwanis International and UNCIEF, we have raised over 37 million dollars towards this wonderful project. Our motto, “Caring-Our Way of Life”, is more than just some words on a piece of paper. We exemplify this motto through each and every single volunteer event we participate in.

One of my main goals this year as Lieutenant Governor is to create a more unified division by having inter-division service events. This way, Key Clubbers from across our eight schools get to know each other while serving our community at the same time. More people per volunteer event also means a larger scale impact. Another thing I hope to do this year is for our division to raise funds for the ELIMINATE Project. With the help of your club officers, we will come up with a fundraiser that everyone can actively participate in. Finally, as the school year has gotten underway, I hope everyone has adjusted well. Hopefully you’re enjoying each and every single one of your classes. In my closing remarks, let me remind you that even though your “school life” might get busy at times, the need for our help in our community never ceases. Continue to serve your home, community, and the world. I hope to see you all soon at a future service project! Yours Truly in Service,

Kevin Zhang Kevin Zhang Division 38 Lieutenant Governor Pacific Northwest District Key Club International

What is MNT? Maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) can quickly turn the joy of childbirth into tragedy. MNT kills one baby every nine minutes. MNT is caused when tetanus spores come into contact with open cuts during childbirth. The disease strikes the poorest of the poor, the geographically hard to reach and those without health care. Left untreated, newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. There is little hope of survival, but MNT is highly preventable.
