Introduction Main activities Expected results
A new, validated open-source/
open-access tool for epidemiological
studies linking GMO feed consumption
A database with information
for monitoring possible health
impacts of GM crops
Recommendations, training and
guidelines related to the use of the
tool developed as well as necessary
actions for further improvement of
post-market monitoring.
Contribution to a harmonized approach towards post-market monitoring of the health impacts of GM animal feeds;
Greater insight into the occurrence of certain health
and welfare impacts related to feed consumption.
Impacts
Improved assurance of safety and quality of animal feeds;
Identification of existing studies, data, initiatives, and networks, on
epidemiology of health impacts of both GM and non-GM feeds
in livestock animals;
Exploration of GM animal feed exposure
measurement possibilities;
Definition of health indicators for monitoring of four types of
potential health effects;
Development of a conceptual epidemiological model to link
exposure of an animal to GM ingredients and assessing feasibility
for its use in the EU;
Establishment of a database with data for
monitoring health impacts of GM crops;
Formulation of recommendations to European policy makers, risk
managers, risk assessors, biotech company regulatory officials,
and veterinary professionals;
Provision of training related to the use and translation of the results
of the model.marlonhealth

GM feedconsumption
open-source/access epidemiological tool
Marlon aims to support
post-market monitoring
of the link between
health impacts in
livestock and GM feed
consumption through
the development of an
open-source/open-
access epidemiological
Before genetically modified organisms
(GMOs) can be brought to the market in
the European Union (EU), they need to
undergo a rigorous pre-market
assessment. Besides this, GMOs can also
be subject to case-specific
post-marketing requirements based on
risks identified during the pre-market
assessment.
Since there is no general approach or
system in place that can be employed for
post-market monitoring of GM-crop-
derived animal feed health effects in
livestock animals, there is a need to
establish a scientific approach towards
demonstrating the linkage between
animal health and GMO consumption.
