28 JULY 1991
[WALKING IN CITIES]When I walk through the city facing countless steel and concrete. I have always had a question, what our cities need, and what is that humans really need in cities? Do our demands really be satisfied? I keep walking. I keep trying to find solutions with urban design strategies. Therefore, I follow a certain order to walk through the cities, realizing them. I believe what I insist on the urban design will receive affirmation and promotion one day then to make my long-cherished dream come true, namely a better city to satisfy human need.

Sukkah looks simple but it tells a story, a story of a tradition, a story of the life. Sukkah is the shelter; it is the reason and space for the community to sit together, to talk, to eat, to study and to live together. Inside of a Sukkah is dynamic, it is alive, flexible and responsive. This temporary pavilion explores the interaction of conceptual design thinking and the use of digital tools with hands on construction techniques. Additionally, the project aims at utilizing the students potential working with digital modeling and expediting construction of the complex geometric pattern.

The conceptual approach to the realization of this pavilion explores sustainable structures. The organism constituting of more than 3000 recycled cardboard pipes has an identity ofsustainability and resembles the notion of up cycling.

The cuboid is inspired by the traditional and vernacular form of the Sukkah. However, this simple cuboid shape has a more complicated form on the inside. The tubes are cut with different heights and are attached to the walls. The roof structure follows the same logic and creates a ow of different sizes of tubes extruded inside the cuboid.

All cities have some form of informal spaces within them and these spaces grow along with the city. This growth in informal spaces is perceived as disorganized and chaotic. The traditional role of city planners is to eliminate or curtail this disorganization. In an attempt to organize the growing city structure, planners are still looking at conventional approaches, and, as a result, they end up designing static spaces. But these disorganized structure, when looked closely, are self-organizing system. The planners need to understand the self-organization of informal spaces and need to take it into account while designing them.

The best way to address these informal spaces is to evaluate the conventional approach taken by the authorities. The research looks at the case of Mumbai’s informal markets as an example of complex systems, these complex systems are interdependent on each other for their smooth functioning. Two cases of informal railway markets and a market built by the authority to replace the informal markets were selected for this study. The markets were studied during a field visit, and were analyzed and compared to understand their pattern and how they work as system. Issues of congestion, messy image, safety, and security were studied to understand the problems of the informal markets. The solutions proposed by authorities and counter proposals were then evaluated to arrive at a more effective solution for the markets.

PHASE 2: The site in consideration had flyovers and bridges to increase the connection within the city. While the bridges are planned primarily for improving vehicular flow, the spaces under the bridge structure are left unplanned, ending up as harhazard parking, encroachments and garbage dump. The conceptual project is a solution to the research and study of the public spaces. The proposed uses under these bridges are context specific and based on the detailed study of the adjacent neighborhood, on-site documentation of the bridges and general use and activity pattern.
FOOD PLAZA: Mumbai being in one of the hot and humid
regions of the country, people prefer staying out in the evening
when its cool. Open plazas are ideal locations where people generally gather. Addition of
food kiosks to such plazas increase their usability and
become an attraction.
![Page 13: [LOOKING TO THE FUTURE BECAUSE THAT IS … GK 2017 Portfolio... · ACHIEVEMENT HUDCO Trophy NASA - Slum Rehabilitation Finalist JAN, 2012 Winning Team MAY, 2017 Exhibit in Avon Duck](https://reader031.vdocuments.site/reader031/viewer/2022020413/5b6444c97f8b9a3c5e8d112e/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
The existing vending areas are given a dedicated zone for vending with required facilities of shading,
watersupply and storage.
Design Components: Alternatives for kiosks have been proposed which are legalized and given to
the vendor according to their uses. The kiosks are provided with water supply, electricity, storage
space, and advertising space.

In planning for a future where Georgetown continues to experience linear population growth, many gaps in the current structure of the urban fabric become apparent. While formulating a plan for the future, stage one included infrastructure study, stage two included understanding gaps in streetscape inconsistency, voids in development, etc. and the final stage was designing new construction guidelines for downtown Georgetown studding the zoning codes.
![Page 15: [LOOKING TO THE FUTURE BECAUSE THAT IS … GK 2017 Portfolio... · ACHIEVEMENT HUDCO Trophy NASA - Slum Rehabilitation Finalist JAN, 2012 Winning Team MAY, 2017 Exhibit in Avon Duck](https://reader031.vdocuments.site/reader031/viewer/2022020413/5b6444c97f8b9a3c5e8d112e/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
GOAL MAPGAPS
In the analysis, it became apparent that while downtown Georgetown is well accessible from the surrounding city and region, it prioritizes the car over the pedestrian. Streets are wide and parking is ample, but as a result the walkable core of Georgetown is surrounded by moving and parked cars – cutting it off from surrounding neighborhoods and stifling further growth.

GOAL DIAGRAM 1
To create an engaging downtown core steps will be taken to diversify businesses and opportunities and activate public spaces. The first step to diversify businesses and opportunities will include establishing a “Main Street” Organization. This organization will partner with multiple stakeholders, including the Scott County Department of Tourism, the Scott County Chamber of Commerce, and the Kentucky Heritage Council. Short-term action to activate public spaces will incorporate three components to produce a highly populated, walkable environment that will naturally draw people out to participate in public spaces and activities.

The 2016 competition challenged multidisciplinary teams of graduate students to propose ideas for transforming the transitional site and complete the vision for Midtown Atlanta as a thriving, sustainable, mixed-use, walkable, and transit-accessible neighborhood. The exercise included taking advantage of the site’s proximity to downtown and Technology Square, its adjacency to Peachtree Street and public transportation, and its strong regional access. The competition is designed as an exercise; there is no intention that the students’ plans will be implemented as part of any revitalization of the site.
