VISUAL TEXT COMPREHENSIONStudy the brochure below and answer the questions that follow.
Two years ago, a survey was conducted among the youths in the country to find out their views on the family. More than 90% of them felt that it was important to have strong family ties. They felt that a close relationship with their family was crucial to a happy life.
Both parents and children need to make the effort to maintain a good relationship. With regular days being filled with activities, everyone must find ways to devote time to his family. This can be done on special occasions such as birthdays and festivals. It can also be done at special family events. Besides taking a break from
the hustle and bustle of daily life, it is also a good way to have fun. Competing as a family or learning a new skill together helps family members to support and get to know one another better.
At Mill & Jill Design House, we want to reward our employees for their hard work while at the same time allowing them to spend quality time with their families. Family Day started out as a day of fun family bonding at the beach and it has evolved over the years into an exciting carnival-like event suitable for everyone in the family.

After (34) consideration, I decided to work overseas. I was
not well-educated and employment in the city looked bleak. I could earn much more
if I worked abroad. My elderly parents would not have to fret (35)
money issues. My siblings could lead a better life. On the other hand, I was worried

Noughts and crosses, commonly known as tic-tac-toe, is a popular game
among children. This effortless game use two symbols, X and O and is usually
played by two players on a self-draw three-by-three grid.
The rule of this game is simple. Each player take turns to fill a box in the grid
with X or O. Usually the player who goes first takes X. The other player will then
choose a box to put his symbol, O, on it. This goes on unless one player forms a
vertical, horizontal or diegonel row of three symbols (3Xs or 3Os) and wins.

Each game can be played neumeros times in a short time period. A game
can be as short as a few seconds, allowing people to play it reapitedly. Besides
speed, it is also conveneint to play this game. Sometimes, writing material is not
even neccesarry. It is possible to draw the grid on midst formed on a window. The
patterns on a grid-like tiled floor can also be used.
This seemingly easy-to-play game require a player to think ahead in order
to win the game or prevent his opponent from winning. The player must be mindful
of every move as a wrong move will allow his opponent to emerge the winner.

COMPREHENSION OPEN-ENDEDRead the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow. (20 marks)
Many people have the misconception that the white tiger is an albino, that
its white covering is the result of a genetic condition. However, some white
tigers still carry a pigment that creates their fur colour. These white tigers
have an orange tint on their white fur. A white tiger is actually conceived by
two mature tigers that have white colour genes. This species, found in the
Indian subcontinent, have become especially rare today as the defective,
recessive gene is not always passed on from the parents. It is also rare that
the gene carrying adults actually mate.
The white tiger, can grow up to three metres in length. It usually has blue
eyes, a pink nose and brown stripes on its white covering. Each stripe on
the white tiger is unique. Armed with acute senses of smell and sight and a

15
set of strong jaws and teeth, the white tiger in the wild can capture its prey
easily on its own. The brown stripes keep it camouflaged among the grass
and trees while it hunts but compared to a normal Bengal tiger, camouflage is
not as easy. Interestingly, the white tiger, widely known for its great swimming
skills, likes to consume its food in the water. Sometimes, it might pursue, its
prey into the water. The white tiger is not an excellent climber or runner. This
intelligent creature spends most of its time resting and usually hunts only
at night. Today, it has become harder for the white tiger to find prey due to
excessive deforestation.
A mature female white tiger can give birth to approximately one to four
cubs each time, every two to three years. Her young usually depend on
her for their carnivorous diet and security for the first two years before they
become independent.
In the wild, white tigers can be found in a variety of habitats such as
tropical forests and mangrove swamps. They can also be found in jungles
with dense vegetation and a river.
Sadly, the population of the white tigers is on the decline due to poaching
activities. Their unique white coats as well as parts of their body believed to
have medicinal value are still senselessly sought after.
To prevent the extinction of the white tiger population, captive breeding
is carried out. The white tigers have a life span of ten to fifteen years if they
dwell in the wild. Those kept in enclosures at the zoo will usually have a longer
life span. Today, white tigers are often the star attraction in zoos around the
world.

COMPOSITION
PART 1: SITUATIONAL WRITING (15 marks)The pictures below show a mother talking to her son, Joe.Study the pictures carefully.
Mum, the June holidays start next week. May I invite my classmate, Mark, to stay over for a few days?
That’s a good idea, Joe! Dad and I were thinking of taking you to the Science Centre and Universal Studios. Would you like to invite Mark along?
Mark would love that! He loves to ride on rollercoasters and there are several of them at Universal Studios. He would also like to take pictures with the characters that walk around the park. I’m sure we’ll have a great time there!
That’s a great! We could have our meals at the different restaurants there too.
I’ll tell him about the Science Centre as well. He isn’t very interested in Science but he hasn’t been there in a long time. There might be new exhibits that will interest him.
Thanks, mum! I’ll tell Mark about our plans.
Yes, there is a new dinosaur exhibit there and the gallery on electricity and light has been revamped. I’m sure he’ll enjoy himself.
