1. Why does leadership matter?
Improving leadership delivers value to key stakeholders
inside and outside the organization. As a result of better
leadership,
Employees will be more productive
Organization strategies will be implemented
Customers will increase customer share
Investors will have more condence
Communities will have better reputation
We will quantify the value of leadership for individuals who
want to be better leaders and for organizations trying to build
better leadership.
2. What makes an effective leader?
By examining trends in leadership thinking, we will identify
the keys to being an effective leader. We will talk about the
shift from leader (the individual as a leader) to leadership
(the collective leadership within an organization). We will
also talk about the shift from leaders focusing inside the
company to outside. These two trends create a logic for a
leadership brand. Effective leaders follow a leadership brand
by doing both the code and the differentiators.
Leadership Code identies ve core factors for effective
leader:
Strategist: leaders set direction for the future of theorganization
Executor: leaders get things done with accountability and
ability to change
Talent manager: leaders communicate and coach people
Human capital developer: leaders develop future leaders
Personal profciency: leaders build personal trust so that
others follow them
We will identify specic actions and tools that leaders can
master to deliver on these leadership basics.
Leadership differentiators identies how leaders behaviors
inside a company should reect the expectations of customers
outside the company. We have found that the 3040%-
ofsustainable leadership requires thinking about how external
expectations are related to internal leadership behaviors. We
will review the six steps in building better leadership in a
company. Leaders who do these six steps can assure better
leadership in their organization.
As a result of this module, each participant will be able to
identify what they can do to be a more effective leader.
3. How do we sustain our leadership goals?
We have found that many leaders want to improve and know
what to improve, but they are not able to sustain their goals.
This module summarizes research and practice on how leaders
do what they know they should.
By synthesizing research on change, self-discipline, inuence,
habits, and leadership development, we will discuss 7 factors
for how leaders can sustain what they intend:
Simplicity: how can I focus on a few key actions and
behaviors that have the highest impact?
Time: how can I make sure that my aspirations show up
in my calendar?
Accountable: how can I ensure that I am accountable for
making my change happen?
Resources: how do I resource (through coaching and HR
practices) the ability to sustain change?
Tracking: how do I measure my progress?
Meliorate: how do I continually learn and grow?
Emotion: how do I bring personal emotion and passion
to my work?
Leadership sustainability occurs when leaders master these
seven principles for themselves and when the help those theylead master them as well. Leaders matter. Leadership matters
more. Leadership sustainability matters most.
