Instructions for using the resourcesPractise saying the alphabet using the alphabet chart, pointing to each letter as it is said. Go back over
each letter and say the sound it makes (for example, we use the long ‘a’ sound for the letter name, but the sound it makes is the short ‘a’) Ask the children to identify objects (or think of things they know) which
begin with a particular sound. Model saying the letters carefully, asking the children to watch your mouth as you form the sounds.
Use the letter flash cards to practise saying each letter. When the children become better at this, ask the children to say the name of the letter, and the sound it makes. Show an item from the classroom, along
with the card showing an initial sound – ask the children if the card matches the item. Show some examples which are correct, mixed with one or two which are wrong.
Use the tracing mats to practise writing each letter in lower case and capital form. If children find pencil control difficult, let them practise in a tray of dry sand or using some shaving foam spread on a table top.
Complete the initial sound sheets (teacher can scribe for children who find letter formation difficult). Ask the child to say the name of the object slowly, and if they struggle to hear the initial sound, the adult could
say the word a few times to help. Compare the initial sound to the alphabet sheet used previously, and remind the children that the name of the letter is different to the sound it makes. Ask the child to think of other things which begin with the same initial sound. These sheets could be used at the beginning of term,
and then again at the end as an assessment tool.
Play the initial sounds matching game in pairs or small groups or use with the whole class in a circle. Put the cards down, mixed and facing up, and ask the children to make pairs which match the picture with the
initial sound. Give each child part of a pair and let them try to find their partner by walking around the room, asking the other children to say the initial sound they have. Show the children pairs of cards, some of which are correct and some which are incorrect, and ask the children to say if the pairs match or not.
Hide the cards around the room and challenge the children to find the pairs.
Play the initial blends matching game in pairs or small groups or use with the whole class in a circle. Use these cards in a similar way to the initial sounds game.
Complete the final sound sheets (again, teacher can scribe for children who find letter formation difficult). Ask the child to say the name of the object slowly, and if they struggle to hear the initial blend, the adult could say the word a few times to help. Ask the child to think of other things which begin with the same initial blend and write a list. These sheets could be used at the beginning of term, and then again at the
end as an assessment tool.
Use the missing initial sounds for further practise, or as an assessment tool. If a child struggles to form letter shapes correctly, a teacher can scribe or the child could use the letter fans to point to the correct
letter.
Use the letter fans to support children who cannot yet write the letter shapes clearly. Point to objects around the room and ask the children to find the correct initial sound using the fans.

Alphabet fans
Cut out and make a hole at the point of each letter and hold together with a split pin or piece of string. Use for showing individual letters. Make a set for each child in a small group and show them pictures of everyday items – ask them to find the correct sound in their fans.

Other suggested activities:
Collect together items beginning with the same sound and group them together on a table with the associated sound prominently displayed. You can bring
things you find in the home or garden to add to the collection.
Sit in a circle with some letter cards faced down in the middle. Choose someone to turn over one of the cards. He or she then has to think of a word beginning
with that sound, then the next person in the circle thinks of one and keep going round until it gets too hard for you to think of words before choosing a new
sound to start again.
Play ‘I Spy’ to practise hearing and saying the first sounds in words.
With your family, lay out ten items, five of which begin with one sound, and five with another. Ask everyone to identify the two different sounds and then group the items accordingly. As you become more proficient at this, introduce more
items or a third sound.
Play the odd one out game – similar to the game above, but show three or four items beginning with the same sound and one which begins with a different
sound. Ask them to spot the odd one out.
Draw a giant letter on a large piece of paper and invite each person to help draw items which begin with that sound. Be prepared to help them label their
drawings!
