e-mail: [email protected] Humanities I Distance Education On-Line Course- section #9445, 3 Units Class Orientation: Monday, June 22nd, 6:00pm - 8:00pm – Room #E10 Last date to drop without notation on record is on July 7th Last date to drop with a ‘W’ is on July 28th Final Course date, Thursday, August 13th Course Description & Objectives: An interdisciplinary study of art, music, painting, sculpture, literature, drama, dance, architecture, and Film, to reveal general traits of Western Civilization and culture.

1. Develop critical thinking skills in the context of human thought and creative production. 2. Practice written presentation of course content material. 3. Recognize the relationships among the various cultures in Western civilization. 4. Understand the complex nature of a given culture and the influence of historical events,

geographic location, and belief systems. Required Textbook: Martin F. David and Lee A. Jacobus. The Humanities Through the Arts, 8th Edition, The McGraw-Hill Corporation, Inc., NY, 2008, ISBN 978-0-07-313863-3 (The Humanities Through the Arts 7th ed. Study Guide, optional) Course Requirements: This course will be administered in Etudes on-line teaching modules. There are five elements to the course:

1. Textbook Chapter Readings. 2. Textbook Study Questions 3. Discussion Board Participation. 4. Chapter Quiz 5. Final Essay

. The only make-up exam allowed is the final exam, upon instructor approval. Late assignments will not be accepted. All assignments must be completed in Etudes. Grading Criteria: % Value: Points

Course Study Guidelines: 1. Textbook readings: Read each assigned chapter and take note of information that may be

useful for the Study Questions and the Discussion Board. 2. Study Questions: Answer the assigned study questions for each chapter. Post your answers

in Etudes - Tests/Tasks/Surveys section, so that you will receive credit. See the attached Study Questions guidelines & grading rubric for details.

3. Discussion Board: There were will a discussion topic for each chapter, you will be graded on your participation. See the attached Discussion Board guidelines & grading rubric for details.

4. Chapter Quiz – Multiple choice questions for each chapter to be answered in the Etudes Tests/Tasks/Surveys section.

5. Final Essay – Post your essay in the Etudes -Tests/Tasks/Surveys section. See the attached Essay guidelines & grading rubric for details.

It is the responsibility of the student to make sure that each module assignment is completed on-line by due date of August 10th at 11:59pm.

College Regulations: During the on campus orientation class meeting there will be: No smoking, food, or drink allowed in the classrooms. Only those enrolled in the class may attend the class. Please, do not bring your children or friends to class. Please refer to the documents on CLASSROOM POLICY and CHEATING OR PLAGIASM POLICY for further clarification of campus rules and regulations.

Discussion Board Guidelines and Grading Rubric You must participate in 8 discussion board topics for this course. Each topic is worth a maximum of 25 points. Rules:

1. Respect other student’s opinions and answers, we may disagree, but in a respectful way. 2. Support your opinions and answers with resources from the textbook, study questions, or website. 3. Use your own ideas and opinions; don’t wait for other students to answer and then copy their ideas or

Essay Guidelines and Grading Rubric Essay Paper is Due on August10th The student will be responsible for writing one (1) essay paper on a selected chapter reading or subtitle reading; it will be worth a maximum of 200 points. The essay should be 3-5 pages, type-written, double –spaced, with the font size either 10 or 12, margins either 1” or ½” on all sides. Please add a bibliography to your essay if you refer to any reading or website sources. This is not a research assignment, so please write the paper using mostly your words, thoughts, and opinions. This course will provide the following topics for essays:

a. Painting b. Photography c. Sculpture d. Architechture e. Literature

f. Drama g. Music h. Dance i. Film j. TV & Video Art

Rules: 1. Select one of the above chapter topics and describe how at least 3 different elements of the Humanities

are used. 2. Discuss at least 3 of the following elements of the Humanities: art, music, painting, sculpture, literature,

drama, dance, architecture, or religion. 3. Write your essay based upon your opinions that have been influenced by the readings, the discussion

board participation, and study questions. 4. Use proper citation methods – APA, MLA, etc. 5. Explain the important and significant contributions of your topic for society.
