An international network of volunteers, many of themsailors, united with a common goal sharing our love
of sailing with children.
Most are entrepreneurs committed to community
service and volunteerism.
Our staff and board members include a pediatrician,neurosurgeon, nurse, therapist, two attorneys, an
accountant, and several financial planners.

Program Description
While therapeutic and educational, the focus is also onrelaxation, fun, family time, bonding and making memories. Theultimate field trip for the family.
Parents and children are encouraged to participate as crew hoisting and trimming sails, steering the boat, assisting withnavigation and learning rescue procedures.
Daysail Program A family oriented on-the-water sailing trip,which includes boating safety, sailing instruction, and activeparticipation in operation of the sailboat.

Social Interaction: Small environment/cockpit
requiring close interaction. Helps counter physical andsocial boundaries and improves physical and emotional
comfort in small spaces.
Teamwork: Team building and collaboration. Participantscrew the boat to the best of their ability. Participants cooperateto assist in pulling the lines, wrapping them around the winchesand securing them. Learn importance of cooperation for man-overboard procedure. Cooperative environment of everyone
having a job on the boat.
Communication/Comprehension: Ability to listento instructions and follow procedure. Communication
required between crew and captain to identify andname potential hazards and to navigate.

Concentration/Focus: Children
with limited ability to sit still orconcentrate are able to focus on
tasks on boat and are visiblycalmer, relaxed and focused.
Ability increases to concentrate ontask(s).
Relaxation: Reduced noise stimuli:primarily rhythmic sounds of waves
lapping the hull and wind in sails.Rhythmic movement of boat is also
comforting, yet heeling providesexcitement.
MotorSkills/Coordination: Eye-handcoordination to hoist sail or pull lines.Balance when ambulating around the
boat, using hand holds. Visualstimulation to watch for hazards, and
align boat with object indistance/horizon while steering.

control while steering and maneuvering the boat as well asbeing part of team. Sense of accomplishment at facing
fears and completing tasks

including birds/fish/mammals. Understanding of effects ofpollution on environment and species.
Adventure/Exploration/Imagination: Children dream ofbeing explorers, pirates, etc. Opens up the world to them.
Encourages imagination. International program andvirtual programs provide opportunities to learn about

Layers of light clothing, plus ajacket (as it is always cooler on
the water), white rubber soleshoes (tennis shoes or similar -flip flops are not suggested) and
don't forget the sunscreen!Youre also welcome to bring
water and extra snacks.

Volunteer Opportunities
Sailboat owners to provide their time, experience and/orboat for use in the Daysail Program
Volunteers must pass background screening
Captains/Skippers must complete training and abide by all
policies and procedures outlined in Operations Manual Administrative help, Event Coordinators & Grant writers
Ask us how your talents and expertise can contribute
(everything from writing an article for our newsletter,
attending local charity events on Heart of Sailings behalf,participating in walks and other similar events, as well as
helping with press releases and promotional events).

Heart of Sailing will host its 3nd
Sail-a-thon, International Fundraising Event in conjunction withSummer Sailstice, all summer 2009 to benefit our sailing programs for special needs children
The Sail-a-thon is an international event to benefit Heart of Sailings Daysail program, enablingspecial needs children and their families to enjoy the therapeutic benefits of sailing at no cost. Sail-a-thon is held in more than 30 regions across the U.S., Canada and Europe including sailing excursions,
boat parties, beach picnics, and cookouts, as well as door prizes and awards for fundraising.
Calling all sun, summer and sailing worshippers. Join the Heart of Sailing Team and sailors
worldwide in our 2nd annual Summer Sailstice celebration of sailing on the weekend of June 20/21 Our largest fundraiser on the longest sailing weekend days of the year!
Join us to help expand our program to new horizons where we can serve more families. You caneither join a Sail-a-thon or create your own in your area.
