Why We Volunteer
2
HOW DID HE GET INVOLVED?
“I was sitting at my computer in 2000,”
said Nick, “and did a search on The
Gunnery. While looking at the web site,
I was pleasantly surprised at the recent
progress on campus (i.e., campus plant,
caliber of students).” Shortly after, Nick
decided to become a class agent. He had a
wonderful time reconnecting with former
classmates. As time went on, he (and fellow
alumnus Stephen Garvan), picked up
multiple classes that didn’t have class
agents. Recently, he worked with Wykeham
Rise alumna, Shelly Caroe, to get her
classmates back into the school community.
“I am helping an organization that is a
benefit to society. It was also one that I
personally benefited from. This school
develops well educated students to bring
society to a better point than it is at today.”
For his efforts, in 2004, Nick was honored
with The Gunnery’s Alumni Award.
He volunteers his time at
his alma mater for three
reasons. First, he achieves a
level of SATISFACTION
RECONNECTING with faculty
and friends. Second, he feels
he is GIVING SOMETHING
BACK for future generations.
Finally, he feels FULFILLED
in working with the
school staff to advance
school goals.

To be an effective volunteer,
you need to have a passion and
interest for the school. Paper
doesn’t raise money. People
raise it. I am delighted to call
alumni and ask for money because
I truly believe in what the school

Dear Gunnery Family & Friends,
So many people helped to make the Annual Fund a success.
Alumni, parents, grandparents, students, faculty, staff and
friends have all played a significant part. Thanks to you,
this has been another record year for the Annual Fund.
This achievement reflects the strength of the school, the
commitment of our faculty, the excellence of our students,
and the inspiring leadership of our Head of School,
Susan Graham.
The Gunnery experience continues to prepare young men and
women for their futures in a very personal and special way.
We continue to help our students develop their character,
courage and resilience. Thank you again for your generous
support. It is deeply appreciated.
Regards,
Stephen W. Baird ‘68President, Board of Trustees

Among her many duties as
a Gunnery volunteer,
Rebecca Weisberg ’90
names “Event Planner” as
her favorite. She has been
instrumental in heading
several alumni-based events
in Manhattan including the
New York City Alumni &
Parent Reception and the
NYC Theater Party.
She works alongside the Advancement
Office in the planning, marketing, and
hosting of the event. “Seeing the alumni,
parents, and faculty socializing, laughing,
and having a good time gives me a great
sense of satisfaction,” she said. “All my
work really pays off when I see that.”
Since joining The Gunnery as a Class Agent
in the late 90’s, Rebecca has become one of
the school’s strongest supporters. She had
the distinction of being the first alumna
from the 1990’s elected to the Board
of Trustees.

core culture of The Gunnery was
close-knit. You really felt like part of
a community and family there. You
don’t get that at a public high school.
The Gunnery also had a profound
impact on getting me into college.
I wanted to give something back.

Since 1982, David has been working
tirelessly on the Annual Fund. During his
first year, $320,000 was raised. Shortly after
being appointed the Chair of the Annual
Fund, Harry Jones joined David in growing
it to what it is today. “David and I go way
back to the 50’s,” said Harry. “I told David
I would work with him as long as I don’t
have to make any speeches.” According
to David, “Harry is a wonderful steward
for the school. He and I have developed a
great working relationship over the years.”
Like his fellow co-chair, Harry carries a
close connection to the school. “I became
involved with The Gunnery in 1981. My
classmate, Ted Koven, and I returned to
play in a Gunnery student/alumni soccer
game. From there, I became involved.
My son Harry graduated in 1989. That
brought me even closer to the school.”

It is with pleasure that I extend thanks to allwho participated in this record year.
Our Annual Fund surpassed last year’s achievement by 13%.
Over 1,000 alumni, parents, past parents, grandparents, and
friends made a gift to the 2007-08 Annual Fund, showing
their strong support for The Gunnery. Above and beyond
the Annual Fund, The Gunnery also received support for
capital improvements and the endowment. Every gift makes
an impact on the educational experience provided to our
students. Your commitment to our school is remarkable,
and I am grateful to you for your generous support.
In addition to the many volunteers who worked on behalf
of our fundraising efforts, I would like to extend a special
thanks to our Director of Development, Thomas Hollinger
for his tireless leadership of the Development Office for the
past 20 years. We could not have enjoyed our many
fundraising successes without Tom’s thoughtful guidance.
I know you will join me in celebrating our past and
approaching our future with confidence.
Regards,
C. Russell McKee, ’72 & P ’06Development Committee Chair

The Annual Fund provides essential operating support to The Gunnery. Unlike
capital monies, these unrestricted funds are spent in the year in which they are
raised. Every dollar is put to immediate use supporting faculty compensation,
academic programs, financial aid for students, and a host of other items needed
to run the school. The tuition and fees paid per student do not cover the actual
cost to educate each student. The Annual Fund provides every student with a
“silent scholarship” to make up the gap. To illustrate the impact of our Annual
Fund — the school would have to more than double its current endowment of
$20 million to earn the same $1.2 million the Annual Fund raised this past year.

I consider the trustee appointment a great honor.
We (the trustees) have one thing in common.
We love The Gunnery and want to give
something back ... I feel our success will rise or
fall by getting more people involved. It’s very
easy to talk about our school in a positive
manner because I love it. There is a warmth
here that other schools don’t have.

There was a need at The Gunnery for additional
ways for alumni leaders to plug into this great
institution. In a short time, the council has
made many decisions regarding planning and

All of the volunteers agree that new
blood is a wonderful thing. “I would
encourage anybody with a little bit of
time to give back to the kids,” said
Leigh. “I’ve really enjoyed meeting
and making friends with the
volunteers. We all really get along.”
“This is Leigh’s and my last year,” said
Laurie. “I’m excited to see what next
year’s parents bring to the party. There
is room for growth, and I have no
doubt it will get better and better.”
Several parents volunteered their time
and talent to the 2007 Parent Auction.
They included Kay Caroe, Charlene
DeGrazia, Ted DePaolo, Kate Grandin,
Betsy Johnson, Jeri Kirk, Susan Lussier,
Lynn O’Neil, Adrienne Parkman, Karen
Prado, Charlene Sarris, Nancy Stein,
Karen Tesch, and Chris Tolley.
When asked why she
volunteered to work on the
Parent Auction, Leigh Graham
P ’09 said, “I am the type of
parent who always got
INVOLVED at my child’s
school.” Laurie Ryer P ’07 &
’09 felt that with her previous
experience in fundraising,
SHE COULD MAKE A
DIFFERENCE. “This is my
fourth year of co-chairing
the Parent Auction with
DeeDee Hill P ‘07 & ‘10,” said
Laurie, “and I am extremely
proud of our growth.

The auction is a collaboration between
the auction committee and almost every
department in the school.” Laurie,
DeeDee, Leigh, and Dana Dayton P ’00,
’03, ’08 & ’10 are the driving leadership
behind this mammoth project. DeeDee
describes it as “the social event of
the year.”
Each member of the committee has
their own unique talents and skills.
“I like to brainstorm new and fun ideas
with the committee,” said Laurie.
DeeDee and Dana have the nuts and
bolts experience from their auction
time at Rumsey Hall. Leigh is a very
hard worker and incredibly reliable.
She works with DeeDee on the
logistics and processing of items.”

I accepted being on the Board
because I think of this school as a
huge anchor for Washington, CT

giving of grandparents
Since 2006, they have solicited the
grandparent constituency for Annual Fund
donations. “My wife and I have always
volunteered our services,” said Mr. Ryer.
“So when The Gunnery asked for our help,
we were glad to volunteer.” The Ryers have
volunteered their time with other
organizations in the Ridgefield, CT area
including Buildings and Beyond, Chamber
of Commerce, and the Ridgefield Visiting
Nurses Association. For the latter, Mr. Ryer
is the Chair of the Development Committee
while Mrs. Ryer works with Accreditation.
And what is Mr. Ryer’s message to those
who have never volunteered? “You achieve
a great satisfaction through donating your
time. You also get to see what your hard
work does for the organization.”
Michael and Lynn Ryer were
IMMEDIATELY IMPRESSED
upon their first visit to The
Gunnery: first, by the
physical plant, second, by
the faculty. They knew that
THIS WAS A SPECIAL PLACE.
They decided to GIVE
SOMETHING BACK after
seeing what the school had
done for their grandsons.

The following Alumni, Parents of Current Students and Alumni, Friends, Grandparents,
Companies and Foundations have made generous donations to The Gunnery towards
the school’s capital funds which ensures the financial strength and health of the school.
c a p i t a l s u p p o r t
Gifts for capital purposes support the renovation and construction of campus
facilities and provide support for special campus projects and equipment not
covered by the school’s operating budget. This past year gifts for capital support
have been directed to recent construction projects such as upgraded technology
(Broadband width), enhancements to faculty apartments, renovation to the
art department dark room, construction of environmental classroom, and athletic
equipment. As we continue to implement our strategic plan, we will rely on
increased capital giving to support planned campus improvements.

My parents (John & Rose Dufour)
were very active at The Gunnery
when my brother, sister, and
I were there. That definitely
influenced me to get involved.
Eventually, I will be able to
increase my donations, but this
is my way to give back to
the community now.

carefully managed to provide a source of income in perpetuity. Currently the school

Donors have established endowed funds to support student financial aid, faculty
