Physical changes in the hair
Hair in good condition is flexible andelastic. As hair is curled or waved it is bent
under tension into curved shapes. The hair is stretched on the outer side of the curveand compressed on the inner side. If it isdried in this new position the curl will beretained.

C hanging the shape of the hair
Alpha and Beta KeratinThe keratin bonds of un-stretched hair are
in alpha keratin state and the keratinbonds of stretched hair are in Beta keratinstate. This is the basis of cohesive or temporary setting.

Physical changes
Within the cortex the polypeptide chains of keratin are cross linked together bypermanent bonds, disulphide links, that donot get broken down in the setting andblow drying service and Hydrogen and saltbonds that are temporary and break downand are reformed into their new positionwhen the hair is dried.

HumiditySets and blow drys last much longer in dryenvironment, however, in the UK theatmosphere can sometimes be humid whichcauses the set to drop, this is because the hair isHygroscopic (it is able to absorb and retainmoisture). This means the stretched Beta Keratin isgradually returning to Alpha Keratin.
It is why it is important to ensure your set or blowdry is thoroughly dry to allow it to remould in theposition you want.

15/29
Hair Growth PatternsWidows Peak This is where the hairline grows forward at the front to form a strongcentre peak. It is difficult to create a full fringe because the hair tends to separate and lift.
it is better to style the hair back off the face or create a very heavyfringe so that the weight of the hair helps the fringe to lie flat
Double C rown If the hair is cut too short on the crown it is impossible for it to lie flat, the hair must be left longer

Hair Growth PatternsC owlick This is found at the front hairline and makes straight fringes on finehair difficult to cut. It is better to sweep the hair to one side (workingwith the cowlick, not against it)
Nape Whorl This type of hair growth patterns makes straight hairlines difficult toachieve. It is better to cut the hair shorter into a V shape or grow itlonger so that the weight of the hair holds it down
