COOKIN CRACKLINS AT PALMETTO This was an Awesome event I know that the weather probably kept a lot of you away but we sure enjoyed
those of you (100+) who joined us To start we had 5 pots of cracklins cookin We shared cracklins that
were seasoned and some with just salt We offered vinegar dips Steen Syrup and cracklin salad (Mrs
Venola Broussard) to give you and idea of the different ways that they can be enjoyed We also provided
tastes of fried sweet potatoes bananas apples smoked sausage and donuts Robbie didnrsquot disappoint us
with his grilled boudin (Love it) Everything tasted great What I liked the most was how everyone seemed
to be enjoying themselves both cooks and visitors I was treated to stories of how people remember their
families cooking crackins and the different tips and techniques they remember It did my little Cajun heart
good to bring a little of our culture to the park We had so much fun wersquoll probably do it again and wersquore
thinking of how we can make it even better THANKS to our cooks Meaux Brothers Carl Leblanc Joey
Lemaire and their helpers We couldnrsquot have provided this program with out you

MANAGERrsquoS MESSAGE
Louisiana Reptile and Amphibian Enthusiasts
LARE is a group of local individuals who are very interested in reptiles and amphibians
They have volunteered to inventory and catalog the species of reptiles and amphibians that call
the park home They will do this by setting up wooden or metals covers in strategic places
around the park and then counting examining and photographing the animals that they find
taking cover under these false shelters They will also put out turtle traps and use nets They
never harm any animals or collect them either
Their first excursion to the park was last Sunday and it yielded a surprising number of spec-
imens Here is a list of what they found
Green Frog - dip netted 20+ tadpoles saw about 6 juveniles and one adult
Southern Leopard Frog - saw 7 egg masses 1 juvenile and 1 adult
Eastern Narrow-mouthed Toad - saw 1 juvenile and 1 adult
Spring Peeper - heard 1 male calling
Eastern Newt - saw 1 aquatic adult male 1 aquatic gravid (full of eggs) adult female and 1 ter-
restrial eft
Small-mouthed Salamander - saw 1 adult female
Green Anole - saw 2 adults
Little Brown Skink - saw about 15 adults
Did you know that this is the breeding season for many amphibians I was very surprised to
learn this It seems like it would be too cold And yet they found eggs and tadpoles We will be
posting more information and pictures on our Face Book page in the future By the way if you
are interested in joining this group they are on Face Book

Plant of the Month
Sesbania drummondii
known as Rattlebush Rattlebox and Poison bean Submitted by Fred Densdrof
These woody-based shrubs grow from 1ndash3 metres (33ndash98 ft) tall It is usually much branched
in the upper portion Branches are thin and widely spreading The medium green leaves are
alternate deciduous (lose their leaves in late fall) and pinnately compound There are typically
12-24 leaflets and occasionally as many as 60 are found Each leaflet is oblong shaped and 2ndash3
centimetres (079ndash12 in) long The orange-yellow pea-like flowers occur in a drooping raceme
on a long stem They are often found with red lining The seed pods are four-sided four-winged
and about 10 centimetres (39 in) long The peas rattle inside giving this plant its common
name of Rattlebush Inside the pods the seeds are separated by transverse partitions
These plants flower from May to October usually retaining many of the seed pods which re-
main attached until the plant dies back to ground level for the winter During the winter
months they lose all of their leaves and die back until spring
This plant prefers moist soils of ditches and frequently-inundated meadows as well as depres-
sions and the open edges of lakes ponds and streams
The seeds are poisonous containing the toxin sesbanimide Animals raised with the plant learn
to avoid it because of the foul taste of the green and flowering plants However naive cattle
goats or sheep placed on pastures containing dried plants in late fall and winter are frequently
poisoned Sick animals often die within 24 hours

Jan 15 Palmetto Island State Park ndash Earlier this month Abbevillersquos Friends of Palmetto Island
State park in partnership with the LSU AgCenterrsquos Youth Wetlandrsquos Program hosted 20 high
school Environmental Science students from assembly Christian Academy of Iberia Parish in
an effort to replant over 200 hybrid Irises in low lying areas of the park ldquoWe dig up these hy-
brid irises so that they donrsquot cross breed with our Abbeville Red Irises in the boardwalk areardquo
said Friends of Palmetto director Shannon Neveaux ldquoThese are still native plants so they still
have a place at the park and we wanted to put them where people can enjoy them for years to
comerdquo The students were led by environmental science teacher and 4H director Monique
Sanchez who said she was ldquoalways looking for ways to get out of the classroom so students can
gain hands on knowledge of their environmentrdquo The LSU AgCenterrsquos Youth Wetlandrsquos pro-
gram a grant funded program that partners with LSU led by extension associate Natalie
McElyea provided all the tools and coordination for this event ldquoWe love to work with Palmetto

happy to highlight the Abbeville Red Iris which is such a unique feature of the parkrdquo Students
arrived in the morning and worked until lunch time planting the irises at four different sites

JANUARYrsquoS BIRD BANDING AT PALMETTO
Hi everyone
Thanks so much for all your help and company We skillfully processed 39 birds of 11 species
including highlights of Red-bellied Woodpecker and Golden-crowned Kinglet Our Swamp Spar-
row perhaps not as gaudy was actually a new capture for the site and in pretty unusual habi-
tat White-eyed Vireo is always a challenging bird to find in the winter so it was interesting to
catch an unbanded adult in a spot where we caught a breeding pair this past
summer I was also really pleased to have 13 of our birds be recaptures
from previous banding sessions ndash these recaptures are the foundation for
setting up survivorship analyses so wersquore in good shape for eventually de-
riving survivorship estimates to compare against those from Bluebonnet
Swamp
Other birds of note that I heard or saw around the park included Gray Cat-
bird Eastern Towhee Hairy Woodpecker and Winter Wren No woodcocks
today but I hope the weather will cooperate enough next time to allow me to
set up the afternoon before and then open the nets in the dark on the morning of banding with
the hopes of perhaps catching one I was able to get 3 nets open in the dark this morning (in the
presence of hooting Barred Owls) but those nets didnrsquot produce anything interesting in pre-
dawn minutes

Island State Park it is the perfect site to teach students about the swamp ecosystem and I was
happy to highlight the Abbeville Red Iris which is such a unique feature of the parkrdquo Students
arrived in the morning and worked until lunch time planting the irises at four different sites
around the park They stayed for lunch and then enjoyed a canoe ride to finish the day Anyone
