February’s Boomerang Asset #27 Equality and Social Justice took center stage during the January 17th Youth Peace and Social Justice Summit, an afternoon that brought close to 500 students and facilitators together at CB South HS. The event began with three students sharing their own personal stories about experiences of discrimination. Each story was very different yet similar

as it related to being treated by their peers. The students broke out into facilitated groups to discuss the speakers they had just heard. In the break-out sessions they identified positive solutions which addressed ways to educate others. The Summit concluded with each group presenting their ideas and solutions for change to everyone in attendance. Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick and Commissioner Diane Marse-glia provided closing remarks.

On December 23rd, students traveled to Kensington, Philadelphia to share the holidays with the most deserving and gracious of children. The experience is heartwarming—laughs, hugs, and tears are standard. The untold story, however, is the work needed to make the day’s activities possible. The expectations placed upon the leaders of this project are extraordinarily demanding. Since September, Eric has arrived early and stayed late after school nearly every day working on endless tasks—filming promotional videos, facilitating committee meetings, shopping for massive quantities of gingerbread house sup-plies, wrapping gifts, writing cards, collecting toys, writing agendas, counting money, orga-nizing closets, and much more. Yet, the moment that most impacted the advisor was experi-enced on the bus ride home. After sharing our “highs and lows” of the day, Eric addressed the bus of C.B. South students. His words were spoken with the pride of a parent. He had accomplished what we as teachers strive for each day. He felt and shared the joy in serving

others rather than himself. Kudos to Eric!

Middle School: Yvonne Burke, Middle School: Yvonne Burke, Middle School: Yvonne Burke, Middle School: Yvonne Burke, 7th7th7th7th grade, grade, grade, grade, TamanendTamanendTamanendTamanend Yvonne believes that the primary reason we live is to be of service to others. One of her heroes is Martin Luther King, Jr. Yvonne volunteers extensively, including at the YMCA; Special Olympics; MLK day of service; and at Christ Home for Children. She has also participated in various community service projects that benefit organizations like Aid to Friends and A Women's Place. Yvonne’s younger brother is disabled. She has seen others tease and bully him because of his disability. She is one of his strongest advocates. Yvonne wants people to look at their abilities, not focus on their disabilities. An excellent student, Yvonne is happiest when she is able to help out a fellow student or teachers. She serves as a student council representative, plays basketball, and performs in our musical. Outside of school, Yvonne gave away prize money she won in a competition to help missionaries in Cambodia. These missionaries were helping very young girls who sell their bodies so they can have food and shelter. Her heart breaks every time she thinks about the situation in which these young girls live.

Elementary: Liam Peterson, 4th grade, Barclay Elementary: Liam Peterson, 4th grade, Barclay Elementary: Liam Peterson, 4th grade, Barclay Elementary: Liam Peterson, 4th grade, Barclay Liam quietly helps his classmates feel cared for every day. He shares supplies, welcomes others who are alone, and greets everyone with a friendly smile. He has also done outstanding things to promote service to others. First, he volunteers to supervise a lively group of kindergarten students weekly. He takes his responsibility seriously. Liam is always kind, yet he can be firm too. Second, Liam created a Costumes for Cancer contest with his neighbor. Liam and his mom designed a flyer. He delivered them to neighborhood friends and brought some to school. Liam made a box of materials himself that included supplies to make posters and an "agenda" for the contest. He designed a system for judging, and decided that he wouldn't be in the contest since that wouldn't be fair. He and his family, hosted the event at Meyer Way Park, and ended up raising $400.00. They, along with neighbors and friends, brought snacks and hot chocolate to the event and donated the proceeds to "Cookies for Cancer,” an organization that contributes 100% of its donations to pediatric cancer. Many children and families showed caring on Halloween!

Technology before bedtime: It’s a slippery slope. Before you turn in, you’ve got to send one last text… write one last email… check Facebook one last time. Three hours later it’s 2 a.m., and you’re watching a chimpanzee ride a Segway on YouTube. But you’re not alone. A National Sleep Foundation (NSF) poll found that 95% of Americans use technology within the last hour before lights out. This study and others like it reveal that our brains and bodies pay the price for these late-night tech fests.

Time for a technology curfew – it’s essential for a healthy life and family. By establishing a nightly digital wind-down ritual, you’ll benefit in the following ways: 1. “Unplug” two hours before bed. This gives your brain a chance to unwind and get ready for sleep. 2. Create a schedule and stick to it. Confusion and arguments will be kept to a minimum once your kids

understand that the technology curfew is a nightly event that’s here to stay. 3. Make family fun time a part of the nightly ritual. Idea: Assign a night to each family member and make

him or her in charge of choosing the activity. 4. Don’t forget to add some invaluable me-time to the mix. This could include, reading, writing, pampering

or meditating. 5. Store all digital devices (e.g., smartphone, tablet, laptop, etc.) in an area of the house other than the

bedrooms. 6. Use an alarm clock rather than your smartphone or tablet as a wakeup device.
