The dHealth Lab commercialisation process for e-health innovations
Goal: to help entrepreneurs commercialise theire-health innovations by guiding them throughan optimised commercialisation process.
Problem: The failure rate among e-health start-ups is high: a good technological solution is notyet a successful business.
Objectives:• Identify main problems while commercialising
e-health innovations.• Co-design a commercialisation process that
addresses the above problems• Test the process with real-life cases
Expected output: A validated process tocommercialise e-health innovations
Intermediate results:• Prototype 3.0 of the process• Completed 3 rounds of expert evaluation• Running with 3 real-life cases• Self scan tool in development

Background:Many people use wearables. However, this does not always lead to a healthier lifestyle. The data collected by wearables and other sensors provide new opportunities for health self-management via personalized virtual coaching.
Definition of a virtual coach:A virtual coach is an automated system that assists the user, either as stand in or supplementary to a human coach, to support the desired behavior. The virtual coach channels behavioral insights into concrete advice for the user. This advice is personalized with regard to the user’s context and motivational preferences.
Applications:Fitness coach
• Reach 10.000 steps each day• Train for a 5k
Diet coach• Support users on pitfall moments
Coach on stressCoach on emotional wellbeing of employeesAnd in many other fields
Future steps:The proposed architecture will be tested and implemented for some of the beforementioned applications.

A roadmap for a personalized virtual coach
Basic architecture:The proposed basic architecture as shown in figure 1 consists of three modules and can be applied in different contexts (see Applications). The three modules are numbered in here.
1. First, a measurable goal must be set. Data on when the user reaches this goal or not must be collected so a machine learning model can be trained that can predict when intervention is needed. 2. An action that is suitable for the user is provided by using a hybrid recommender system. 3. Different people can be motivated in different ways. By means of a hybrid recommender system, an appropriate motivation technique is selected.
The proposed action and motivation technique are combined into an advice that is sent to the user.

|[email protected]

Developing innovative business models for small-scale production of biogas from swill
Producing biogas from swill is technologically feasible. So, it can be built. The question is: Should it be built? How can it be viable and desirable?
Results
We found that small-scale production of biogasfrom swill (organic waste) in restaurants hashigher payback periods than desirable forrestaurant owners if they would buy and operatea digester. However, this financial hurdle may beoffset if these novel ways of waste managementand energy production are part of a larger valueproposition: the corporate story of circularrestaurants. We basically changed our unit ofbusiness model design to developing a businessmodel portfolio for a circular value chain. Wedevelop business models for each process in thevalue chain:
Next projectsWe will explore three ways to develop a feasible,viable and desirable value chain:- Optimization: Collecting organic waste via
partnership agreements- Cashmakers: Commercialisation opportunities
for organic fertilizer- Business model innovation: Investment
propositions for circular restaurant concepts.

5. Conclusion & Recommendation• The analyzed ecosystems have similar structures and
struggles across the border;
• Ecosystems differ in scope and size: Groningen more developed compared to the others;
• Start-ups essential for the local economy and labor market;
• More Northern Dutch – North-West German start-up collaboration needed to achieve “critical mass”;
• Proposal: The EDR Start-up Center: a digital cross-border start-up platform to serve as interface between the Northern Dutch – German regions.
Start-up Perspectives - Start-up Ecosystems in the Ems Dollart Region (EDR) -
1. Problem Definition• Between February and November 2018, the
Professorship International Business has initiated and led the project “Start-up Perspectives”, in collaboration with its project partner, Hochschule Emden/Leer (Germany);
• The aim of the project was to explore regional start-up ecosystems in the EDR region and identify (existing) ways for cross-border collaboration between entrepreneurs and other stakeholders in these ecosystems (i.e. policy makers, consultants, incubators);
• The initiating factor for this project was the ongoing growth of the start-up industry in the region. On the Dutch side of the border, the Groningen start-up scene has been a prominent factor in the regional economy, while – on the German side of the border – Oldenburg also has a strong start-up culture. In light of this, the project aimed at proposing ways for start-up ecosystems in the Netherlands and Germany to collaborate sustainably.
2. Methodology• Market research and content analysis of four start-up
ecosystems in the EDR: (1) Groningen, (2) Friesland/Drenthe, (3) Oldenburg, and (4) Emsland/Ostfriesland;
• Desk research: identified participants and mapped the ecosystems; Definition: A start-up is started by individual founders or entrepreneurs to search for an innovative, repeatable, and scalable business model¹; Common frame of reference: Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Diagnostic Toolkit²;
• Primary research: a total of 53 in-depth interviews with ecosystem representatives (start-up entrepreneurs, policy makers, consultants, incubators) from all four ecosystems;
• Tool: AtlasTi used to identify barriers, enablers and collaboration potential.

² Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (2013). Available at: https://assets.aspeninstitute.org
3. Project Partners:
4. Results• Common barriers identified: physical distance,
loss of talent, insufficient market knowledge, lack of incubators, differences in legislation and regulations;
• Common enablers identified: a good network, a good business idea, a start-up friendly environment, good collaboration with academic institutions;
• Compared to the other ecosystems, Groningen stands out as a favorable combination of location, higher education, policy and legislation;
• Still very limited collaboration between ecosystems within and across the border, although the collaboration potential is there.
6. Contact informationDr. Diederich Bakker: [email protected]
Dr. Monica Blaga: [email protected]“The further the ecosystem is in distance, the more difficult it is often to maintain an exchange.”

How best to facilitate internationalization by northern SMEs
- a project in the making -1. Problem definition• The problem definition of this project is the lagging
internationalization by northern SMEs (22% exporting companies against 25% nationally, share in national export half as large as share in national bbp);
• This research is focused on the specific northern causes for lagging internationalization and on the effectiveness of internationalization support by (semi)governmental and academic institutions;
• The outcomes of this project will positively affect several stakeholders: northern SMEs, northern (semi)governmental and academic institutions, and the local population.
4. Expected results• From survey data:
• Knowledge of the obstacles northern SMEs perceive when starting internationalization;
• Awareness of the perception of effectiveness of external support for internationalization.
• From interviews:• Insight into content and range of the
internationalization support offered by governmental and academic institutions;
• Insight into the accessibility and coherence of support by the various institutions.
2. Methodology• The research uses a mixed methods approach:
• A large dataset is collected by means of a survey among northern SMEs;
• Qualitative data are collected through interviews with SME-owners and (semi)governmental and academic institutions
• Participants: 1 Bachelor student writing his graduation project in the academic year 2018-2019, and 160 first-year students carrying out their research project
• The Professorship allocates the topics of the research projects;
• Both the first-year research project and the graduation product focus on the specifically northern causes of lagging internationalization and the (perceived) effectiveness of external internationalization support;
5. Conclusion• The research results will enable better tailoring support to
the specifically northern background of SME internationalization;
• This project will enable governmental and academic institutions to coordinate and improve their internationalization support;
• This improved support will help northern SMEs in their internationalization efforts;
• This project strengthens the Professorship’s internationalization research agenda
