Molecular Biology and Immunology -We have fully equipped labs that facilitateimmunological & molecular biologicalapplications that regulate the outcome ofhuman diseases including dengue andmalaria.
Evolutionary Biology - Ongoing researchinvolves molecular systematics of insectsand birds shedding light on factors that
drive speciation. Research looks at thegenetic basis of Sri Lankan endemicspecies.
Physiology - Prof. W. D. Ratnasooriya, who is a leading researcher in Asia, working on b ioactivity & health benefits ofnatural products (e.g. herbal compounds, tea, rice), and on aspects of mammalianreproductive physiology andpharmacology.
Ecotoxicology - Many research projectsmonitoring the levels of environmentalcontaminants (agrochemicals & heavymetals) and their impact on humans, fishand other aquatic fauna and on theecosystems at large. We offer a Postgraduate Diploma on Ecotoxicology andEnvironmental Management.
Conservation Biology - Research undertakencovers applied ecological, behavioural andgenetic aspects of bats, small mammals, amphibians and reptiles that facilitateconservation efforts in the country. Manyprojects and field sessions provide hands-ontraining and impart knowledge on managingwildlife-related issues. We offer a Diploma inBiodiversity Management.
Ornithology - Prof. Sarath Kotagamaspearheads many projects that deal withbiology, ecology, behavior and conservation ofbirds. FOGSL, Department of Zoology, which isthe local affiliate of Bird Life International, offersstudents hands on experience in bird ringingand outreach activities.
Environmental Science Expertise lies inareas of environmental impacts and monitoring.Other areas of expertise are Wetland andLandscape Ecology, Limnology andEcotourism. We offer a M.Sc. in EnvironmentScience.
Climate Change - We have expertise inClimate Change Science: areas of researchinvolves the carbon cycle, air pollutionmonitoring and modeling green house gasemissions in Sri Lanka and developingadaptation plans and policies. We offer a Postgraduate Diploma in Climate Change andPollution Management.
Welcome to theDepar tment of Zoology!
Established in the 1930 s theDepartment of Zoology is one of theoldest of such entities in theUniversity System of Sri Lanka. It
has progressed from its inception toa department that is currentlyoffering a range of courses that areat the cutting-edge of research anddevelopment in the country.
Our courses are designed to Take on a multidisciplinaryapproach and hence will give
students a wide range of basic andapplied knowledge and skills
P rovide an opportunity toparticipate in field practicalsessions and residential workshops
Allow students to engage in aresearch project of their own choice
P rovide training for students thatwould enable them to obtainscholarships for foreign and localPh.D degrees
Expose students to local andforeign expertise.
P rovide opportunities for on -the job training
