Prez Mukherjee recallsIndira’s decisiveness as PM
NEW DELHI, May 13:
Describing Indira Gandhi asthe "most acceptable" PrimeMinister of a democratic countryeven today, President PranabMukherjee recalled her decisive-ness while giving a subtle mes-sage to the Congress leadership.
Mukherjee, in a veiled mes-sage to the party leadership tospeed up decision-making inorganisational matters, recalledthe former prime minister's deci-sive style of functioning thathelped her party score comebackvictories in state polls a coupleof months after the secondCongress split of 1978.
With Congress vice presi-dent Rahul Gandhi seated on thedais, flanked by Vice PresidentHamid Ansari, former primeminister Manmohan Singh andsenior Congress leader AnandSharma, Mukherjee paid richtributes to Indira Gandhi on theoccasion of the release of a com-memorative centennial volumeon her life and works.
He also received the firstcopy of 'India's Indira - ACentennial Tribute' unveiled byAnsari. The Congress is cele-brating the centenary birthanniversary of Indira Gandhi.
"She was one of the remark-able personalities of the 20thcentury all over the world. Andto the people of India, eventoday after her passing away, sheis the most acceptable ruler orprime minister of a democraticcountry even today," he saidevoking a thunderous applausefrom the audience that com-prised of a galaxy of Congressleaders.
Recalling the second split in
Congress in 1978, PresidentMukherjee said Indira Gandhiwas elected party president onJanuary 2, 1978 and in a matterof few days by January 20 shecompleted the formation of theworking committee, set up theparliamentary board, PCCs andAICC structures and preparedthe party to face elections to thestate assemblies of Maharashtra,Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka,Assam, and NEFA in 1978.
Soon after that, he said, sheled the Congress to a decisivevictory by two-thirds majority inAndhra Pradesh and Karnatakaand went on to make her partythe single-largest in Maharashtrawhere it formed the Governmentalong with the breakaway fac-tion of the Congress. (PTI)
8 killed as nor’wester hits south Bengal,heatstroke toll rises to 5 in Odisha
NEW DELHI, May 13:
Another person today died ofsunstroke in Odisha, taking thedeath toll this summer to five,while eight persons were killedand 14 injured when a nor'westerhit a number of south Bengal dis-tricts.
This was the third heatstrokedeath reported from Angul inOdisha this summer, while twoothers had died in Balangir andBargarh districts, the SpecialRelief Commissioner's officesaid.
Meanwhile, most parts ofnorth India, including the nation-al capital, reeled under intenseheat conditions with the maxi-mum temperature of Delhi set-tling at 41.8 degrees Celsius.
The searing heat intensified inmost parts of Odisha withTitlagarh being the hottest placein the state at 44.5 degreesCelsius, the MeT office said.
The mercury breached the 40-degree mark at 14 places in thestate.
State capital Bhubaneswarand neighbouring Cuttack cityrecorded a maximum temperatureof 39.2 degrees Celsius each.
Lightning strikes claimedseven lives in East and WestBurdwan districts of WestBengal. Four were killed atMongolkot, Galsi, Ausgram andPurbasthali in East Burdwan,while the toll was three in WestBurdwan district -- one inJamuria and two in Salanpur.
One person was killed whenan uprooted tree fell on him atPara in Purulia district, while 10persons were injured.
The other districts hit by thenor'wester were Birbhum,Bankura and Murshidabad,Nadia, Howrah, Hooghly andKolkata.
Officials said a large numberof trees were either uprooted ortheir branches broke as a squallaccompanied by a thundershowerhit the districts.
As a result, train services of
both Eastern and South EasternRailways were badly hit with anumber of trains delayed.
Airport sources said flightswere also affected in the thunder-storm this evening.
The IPL match between KKRand MI at the Eden Gardens inKolkata was delayed due to thenor'wester.
Rajasthan continued to battle asevere heatwave with Kota andChuru recording the highest max-imum temperature of 45 degreesCelsius each.
Bikaner, Jodhpur,Sriganganagar, Barmer and Ajmerrecorded maximum temperaturesof 44, 43.8, 43.6, 43.5 and 43.1degrees Celsius respectively.Jaipur, the state capital, registereda maximum temperature of 42.3degrees Celsius.
While there was light to mod-erate rains at a few places inJodhpur division, the MeT depart-ment has forecast a dust storm atisolated areas of the state tomor-row.
Hisar was the hottest place inHaryana with a maximum tem-perature of 43.8 degrees Celsius,while in Punjab, Patiala andLudhiana recorded a high of 42.4and 42 degrees Celsius respective-ly.
The MeT department has fore-cast the dry weather to continue inboth the states tomorrow.
Isolated parts of south Biharwitnessed a light rain while theweather remained dry in the otherparts of the state. Gaya was thehottest place in Bihar with a max-imum temperature of 40.8 degreesCelsius.
Bhagalpur registered a high of38.4 degrees Celsius, while it alsoreceived 4.66 mm of rains.
The MeT department has fore-cast the possibility of rains orthunderstorms over Purnea andBhagalpur tomorrow. (PTI)
Pak knows it can’t fight waragainst India and win: Javadekar
BENGALURU, May 13:
Union minister PrakashJavadekar today said incidentslike the attack on an Army patrolin Kashmir by terrorists were partof tactics by Pakistan, whichknew it could not fight and win aconventional war with India.
"There are no two opinions.Pakistan knows that they cannotdefeat India. They cannot fight awar against India and thereforewhat they are doing is, it is theirstrategy. But it will be defeated,even as they are isolated in theinternational forum," he toldreporters here.
Javadekar was replying to aquery on terrorists opening fire ona patrol party of the Indian Armyin Tral township of southKashmir's Pulwama district earli-er in the day.
The Pakistani army also firedmortars and automatic weaponsalong Line of Control (LoC) inJammu and Kashmir's Rajouridistrict, where two persons werekilled and three injured.
Javadekar said the nationbelieves in Prime MinisterNarendra Modi's leadership and
recalled his warning after the Uriterror attack that it will not be for-gotten and the sacrifice of 18jawans will not go in vain.
"In the light of what Pakistanhas been doing, including thebeheading of two soldiers byPakistan's special forces alongLoC, our Prime Minister hadmade it clear (after the Uri attack)that the sacrifice of the soldierswill not go in vain."
"The nation believes in thePrime Minister," he said.
He was also asked aboutIndian national KulbhushanJadhav sentenced to death by aPakistani military court oncharges of "spying".
Javadekar said ExternalAffairs Minister Sushma Swarajand others were looking into thematter. "Also, we have won theinternational court verdict."
The Hague-based Internat-ional Court of Justice (ICJ) hasstayed the execution of Jadhavfollowing India's submission thathe was kidnapped from Iranwhere he was involved in busi-ness after retiring from the Navy.(PTI)
Cannot accept project that ignorescore concern: India on China’s BRF
NEW DELHI/BEIJING, May 13:
India is boycotting China'sBelt and Road Forum (BRF)beginning in Beijing tomorrow, aclear indication of that camefrom an official statement issuedtonight which said India cannotaccept a project that ignores itscore concern on sovereignty andterritorial integrity.
India has strong reservationover the China-PakistanEconomic Corridor, a flagshipproject of the connectivity initia-tive that is expected to figureprominently in the two- daymeet.
In a strongly-worded state-ment issued hours before theopening of the forum in theChinese capital, India said theconnectivity initiative must bepursued in a manner that respectssovereignty and territorialintegrity.
"Guided by our principledposition in the matter, we havebeen urging China to engage in ameaningful dialogue on its con-nectivity initiative, 'One Belt,One Road' which was laterrenamed as 'Belt and Road
Initiative'. We are awaiting a pos-itive response from the Chineseside," External Affairs Ministryspokesperson Gopal Baglay saidin a statement.
"Regarding the so-called'China-Pakistan EconomicCorridor', which is being project-ed as the flagship project of theBRI/OBOR, the internationalcommunity is well aware ofIndia's position. No country canaccept a project that ignores itscore concerns on sovereignty andterritorial integrity," he said.
Noting that India has receiveda formal invitation to participatein the six separate forums thatChina is organising as part of theBelt and Road Forum being heldin Beijing on May 14-16, he saidIndia is of firm belief that con-nectivity initiatives must bebased on universally recognizedinternational norms, good gover-nance, rule of law, openness,transparency and equality.
"Connectivity initiatives mustfollow principles of financialresponsibility to avoid projectsthat would create unsustainabledebt burden for communities;balanced ecological and environ-mental protection and preserva-tion standards; transparentassessment of project costs; andskill and technology transfer tohelp long term running and main-tenance of the assets created bylocal communities," he said.
Indian officials maintain thatNew Delhi has objections relatedonly to the CPEC traversingthrough Gilgit and Baltistan ofPakistan-occupied Kashmir(PoK). India treats the entire stateof Jammu and Kashmir as itsintegral part. (PTI)

JAMMU, May 13: Anunidentified man was founddead in a train at RailwayStation Jammu.
According to a policespokesman, yesterday at about11.30 am an unidentified deadbody of a man of age about 30-32 years was found in the bath-room of General Coach ofSealdah Express at Platform No1, Railway Station, Jammu.
"The dead body was shiftedto Government Medical Collegeand Hospital, Jammu for identi-fication and post mortem", thespokesman said, adding, thedeceased is 5 feet 6 inches tall,weatish in complexion and waswearing black pant withoutshirt.

JAMMU, May 13: One per-son was killed while three oth-ers including a motor cyclistwere injured near New BusStand Samba today after themotorcyclist hit a pedestrian.
According to police theidentity of the pedestrian couldnot be made. He was shifted toDH Samba where doctorsdeclared him as brought dead.
The three persons who wereinjured in the accident includ-ing the motorcyclist were firsttaken to DH Samba for treat-ment wherefrom they wereshifted to GMC Jammu.
