Copyright The Open Group 2014The way that businesses use IT is changing. Users are becoming smarter and more able to use technology, and want to do so directly, rather than through a separate IT department. Business departments are taking in business technologists who understand how to use technology for business purposes. Some companies are closing their IT departments and using cloud brokers instead. In other companies, the IT department is taking on a broker role, sourcing technology that business people use directly.20 July 2014Copyright The Open Group 201227Business Use-Cases28
Copyright The Open Group 2014The Open Platform 3.0 Forum recently published a set of 22 business use-cases the Nexus of Forces in Action. These use-cases show the application of Social, Mobile and Cloud Computing, Big Data, and the Internet of Things in a wide variety of business areas.20 July 2014Copyright The Open Group 201228Use-Case Analysis29
Copyright The Open Group 2014The Forum has started analyzing the use cases in various ways. This slide shows an Archimate model of a possible implementation of the first use-case Retail Smart Store. As this and other use-case implementation models are developed, it becomes clear that there are a number of basic models that are used in different contexts over and over again. For example, the same basic model appears at the left and right hand sides of this slide. (TOGAF experts may recognize the original TOGAF Technical Reference Model, with an added business layer. This is an example of how the third platform uses and extends the first.) The Mobile Connected Device model, shown earlier, appears in the middle of the slide.20 July 2014Copyright The Open Group 201229The Development Cycle30

UnderstandingAnalysisSpecification
IterationCopyright The Open Group 2014The White Paper results from a first pass through a cycle of understanding the value of the platform by considering use-cases, analysing those use-cases to derive common features, and documenting the common features in a specification. Further iterations of that cycle will result in further white papers, snapshots and, in due course, in Open Platform 3.0 standards.20 July 2014Copyright The Open Group 201230Architecture Integration31
Copyright The Open Group 2014Enterprises develop their architectures independently, but engage with other enterprises in business ecosystems that require shared solutions. Increasingly, business relationships are dynamic, and there is no time to develop an agreed ecosystem architecture from scratch. Use of the same architecture platform, with a common architecture environment including elements such as principles, stakeholder concerns, and basic models, enables the enterprise architectures to be integrated, and shared solutions to be developed quickly.20 July 2014Copyright The Open Group 201231The First Platform32Operating SystemCommon Application EnvironmentPrevents vendor lock-in Copyright The Open Group 201420 July 2014Copyright The Open Group 201232The first platform provided a common environment for applications and delivered freedom from vendor lock-in. These include solutions based on Social, Mobile and Cloud Computing, Big Data, the Internet of things, and potentially other new technologies. It uses and extends the first and second platforms. In Conclusion35Copyright The Open Group 201420 July 2014Copyright The Open Group 201235Because We Believe in Open SystemsBoundaryless Information FlowEnabling the achievement of business objectives Through IT standards36
