Dear student,
The purpose of this lesson is to learn the important differences between Ser and Estar, the frequently
used Portuguese verbs that both mean "to be." After close study of the circumstances that
determine the choice of verb, you will then use the correct verb in a series of practice exercises. When
you check your answers in the Answer section, you will find explanations along with references to the
original rules as stated at the beginning of the lesson. This is a circular process that
combines repetition and practice, a sure way to enhance your learning experience.
Everyone learns a little differently, but it may be helpful for you to follow these steps:
1. Begin the lesson on Page 1 by reviewing the irregular conjugations of Ser and Estar so that you are
at ease with correct subject and verb agreement.
2. Carefully read the rules that are listed under Ser and Estar. As you do so, it might help to
recall commonly used constructions with which you are already familiar. For example, if you already
know how to tell time in Portuguese, then you recognize the use of Ser and the form são, as in São
duas horas, it is 2:00. Or, in commonly used Portuguese greetings, you know to say Cómo está? for
How are you? In this way, you can see how your prior knowledge fits into the rules of usage, and this
could help you in your efforts to recall the correct verb in other sentences.
3. Finally, complete the exercises, and check your answers in the back. Some students find it helpful
to complete only one section of the exercises at a time before checking their answers. If you do this,
try to do at least 10 questions before looking at the answers. Depend on your memory as much as
possible to provide the answers! Of course, you will review, as needed, any of the rules stated in the
lesson.
I believe you will find this an enjoyable way to learn a difficult subject.
Good luck, and keep practicing!
Maria Oliveira
