Greetings from the Beverly Heritage CenterI am Darryl DeGripp and I am the new Executive Director at the Beverly Heritage Center. I recently resided in Mor-
gantown where I was a City appointed commissioner for the Morgantown History Museum. I started with that commis-sion in 2005 when the museum was only an idea on paper and over the next 7 years I assisted fellow board members ingoing from idea to a 3800 sq. foot state-of-the art facility. My educational background consists of Associate degree inBuilding Technology from Stanly Technology Institute, a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design with an emphasis inhistoric interiors from WVU, and a Masters Degree in Public History with a Graduate Certificate in Cultural ResourceManagement from WVU.
I am looking forward to continuing Beverly’s ongoing events, as well as creatingsome new events, and offering a quarterly rotating exhibit and other community activi-ties. One such activity is a community garden which will include not only a historicallyaccurate vegetable garden but an herb garden as well. Both gardens will bring togetherthe community while offering everyone who visits a chance to view and learn moreabout gardening and its traditional role in the community.

Wine tasting and heritage music will be fea-tured during a brand-new Beverly Heritage Cen-ter event on August 17. The first ever Rhythm &Wine ticketed event will feature wine from areawineries and an assortment of music represent-ing a variety of heritage traditions. Featured per-formers are expected to include traditional mu-sic by Gerry Milnes and Friends and FallingBranch String Band, Americana songs from CalebKarriker, swing music by Jump Start, and bluesby the Dennis McClung Blues Band. In addition tothe wine tasting, concessions will include BBQby the Tygarts Valley Lions Club and local craftsand demonstrations.
Changing ExhibitsFrom February 16 through May 12, the Beverly Heritage Center
has two rotating exhibits. One is on Beverly’s favorite nativedaughter, Laura Jackson Arnold, sister of Stonewall Jackson. Theexhibit features some unique artifacts connected to Laura, includ-ing a scrapbook, quilt, and family tombstone on short-term loanfrom the Upshur County Historical Society. The Images exhibitportrays an array of photographs, paintings, and prints from Bev-erly and around the state.
Opening June 15th, Chairs: The Seat of Knowledge, will featurea variety of types of chairs, with explanation of wooden chair andcane seat manufacture, and innovations in furniture makingthrough the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries. A workshop isbeing planned to provide information on conservation and preser-vation of wood chairs and cane seas, with an instructor to showthe re-caning process.
This summer’s visitors will have a new introduction for theirvisit to the Beverly Heritage Center museum. The short back-ground film, produced by The Walkabout Company of Wheeling,will give an overview of the Beverly story.
Beverly Heritage Center Summer Hours 2013BHC will switch to summer hours following the May 4 & 5 Reenactment. Thismeans we’ll be open every day including holidays, 11 to 5 Sundays throughWednesdays, and 10 to 6 on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Museum admissioncharge of $5 for non-members will begin at the same time, to help fund museumexpenses. Watch our website for the return to winter hours in the fall.

May 4, 5 – Confederate Raids on Beverly, 150th Anniversary Reenactment150 years ago this year, the Confederacy launched ambitious raids into the western Virginia counties that would be-come West Virginia. Come commemorate the spring Imboden raid and summer Mudwall Jackson raid on Beverly withliving history of an occupied town, a reenactment skirmish of the raids, Civil War Ball, and small town welcome. Freefor the public. Soldier and civilian reenactors and sutlers welcome. Find more information to enjoy the event, as wellas registration forms for reenactors, on our website.
June 15 - West Virginia Statehood 1863 and Chenoweth DayAuthor Hunter Lesser presents a program about West Virginia statehood, Gov. Pierpont & Sen. Carlisle talk about theirroles in the new state, and we will celebrate West Virginia Statehood. Enjoy period music and demonstrations on ourannual day that also recognizes Beverly’s favorite son, Lemuel Chenoweth. Free.
July 13 – Beverly in the Civil WarWest Virginia’s 150th Celebration in Beverly will continue with demonstrations and Civil War activities for childrenstarting at 10 am, a History Alive presentation of Porte Crayon at 3:30 pm, church ladies home-cooked dinner at 5:30pm at the Beverly Presbyterian Church, followed by The Blue and Gray Choir at 7pm. Free except for meal.
August 17 – Rhythm and WineEnjoy wine tasting, heritage music, and an assortment of vendors. Multiple wineries will be available for tasting, andbands will be playing throughout the day. Vendors will be displaying everything from jewelry, to food, to one of a kindart. Admission.
September 14 – Harvest Lawn Party & History Hitting the Road!The Harvest Lawn Party is a free event in honor of our community. Jackson’s Mill History Hitting the Road! will sharethe opportunity for children to learn and participate in old-fashioned crafts and Appalachian life. Everyone is welcometo enjoy homemade food, musical jam sessions, and lawn games. Bring your appetite and your instrument! Free.
October 12 & 26 -- Lantern TourBring a flashlight and your courage to tour Historic Beverly, listening to stories of its darker side. Admission.
October - Archaeology Dig and Demonstration(to be scheduled during Archaeology Month)
November 2 - Night at the MuseumCome enjoy a new twist on an old favorite. Admission.
December 7 - Beverly Old-Fashioned ChristmasJoin us in Beverly for Old Fashioned Christmas. Each shop in Beverly offers unique, handcrafted, and homemadegoods for the holidays. Come see Victorian Santa and Beverly’s Historic District at her finest. Free.
