Local Talent a big hit at the 5 Rivers Outback Festival
Although numbers were down
relative to last year’s festival
weekend which included a school
reunion, this year’s 5 Rivers
Outback Festival still attracted a
mass of people and there was a
large focus on promoting local
and regional talent. The
Festival’s open mic session was
extended this year and has
become very popular and a
wonderful medium to showcase
up-and-coming local and regional
talent.
With the river full and flowing and
the lawn green and lush, the
Balranald Caravan Park was
once again a picturesque
backdrop for the Festival’s
Riverbank Bash which truly
highlights the community’s
connection to the river systems,
and the natural assets that
surround our Shire and the
bordering communities that
strengthen our region.
The Festival’s headline acts,
Robinvale’s country music star
Paul Costa and award-winning
country music star Aleyce
Simmonds really got the crowd
rocking and wanting more.
New events were added to this
year’s festival including “A Night
on the Green” on Friday evening
which featured local bands and
artists on the lawn of the
Balranald Caravan Park. Another
new addition this year was the
successful dog jump at the
Riverbank Bash.
The Festival began with the
retailers’ market day, which
always gets locals and visitors
buzzing looking for goodies and
specials around the business
district.
The region’s best culinary and
crafting skills were on show at the
Cooking and Craft Show which
was even bigger and better this
year and wonderfully organised
by Connie Rasmussen and her
team.
Once again, the Balranald Gallery
team put on a fabulous exhibition
titled “Homegrown” which
featured artwork of known artists
who had their beginnings in
Balranald.
Another popular exhibition was
the South West Art’s “Threads of
our Communities” display which
featured fabulous fibre artwork
from all around the region.
The festival finished off on a high
on Sunday with stalls lining the
main street of Balranald, while the
fun fair at the Discovery Centre
had the kids smiling with laser
tag, the big slide, jumping castle
and sausage sizzle hosted by the
Men’s Shed.
The Festival Committee would
like to say a BIG THANK YOU to
all the community groups for their
fabulous food and drink stalls that
kept everyone happy and to all
the corporate sponsors, local
businesses and volunteers who
help make the festival a signature
event for the area and to bring
visitors to the shire and region.
Country music star, Paul Costa

The General Manager and I along with other General Manager’s in the Far West recently attended a community consultation in Brewarrina and Bourke to discuss the Far West Initiative. I am proud to say that Balranald Shire residents have shown commitment through the numbers who attended our meetings.
Please ensure you get your submissions in - we need the Government to understand how passionate we are about our Shire. Written submissions close on Friday 28th October, electronic submissions close on Monday 31st.
The General Manager, Cr O’Halloran and I attended the Local Government NSW Annual Conference on Monday 17th and Tuesday 18th October. During this conference, we also attended the Western Division of Councils meeting and the Far West Initiative meeting with Minister Toole.
Council’s in the Far West Initiative are continuing to show support to ensure we all remain stand alone.
The 5 Rivers Festival was a great success and I would like to congratulate all the organisers and many volunteers who contributed to making the festival such a success.
The weekend saw a great variety of activities, from the South West Arts exhibition at the Theatre Royal to the open mic and various music artists performing. I look forward to an even bigger and better festival next year.

Intereach works in the local Balranald region to support carers, young people and people with a disability through services, support and information. They are a not for profit community based provider who work from nine regional offices across the Riverina Murray region of NSW and northern Victoria; primarily via the Buronga and Deniliquin locations. Intereach services offered in the Balranald area include: ROAR (Reach Out and Relax - Family Mental Health Support Service) Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre (CRCC) and Ability Links. ROAR (Reach Out And Relax) is a
new program that aims to improve the emotional health and wellbeing of children and young people. It provides early intervention support to people up to the age of 18 and their families, who may be showing early signs of, or are at risk of developing a mental health issue. Support offered can be short-term immediate assistance or intensive, long- term, early intervention case management. CRCC (Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre) is short term emergency respite and support for carers. Support may include information and resources, education, connecting with other carers, counselling and respite (short term emergency).
ABILITY LINKS is a new approach to supporting people with a disability aged 9 to 64 years, their families and carers in their communities. “ Linkers” assist, support and work alongside people with a disability to live the life they want as an equal and valued member of their local community. For more information on support available call the local Buronga office on 03 5051 7300 or Deniliquin office on 1300 488 226.

Sport and Recreation’s Swim and Survive lessons
What’s
on
Australian summers usually involve plenty of fun in and around the water, but no parent should forget how important it is to make sure children stay safe.
Sport and Recreation’s Swim and Survive classes for pre-schoolers and school-aged children help youngsters learn important ways to be safe and enjoy our pools, rivers, beaches and lakes.
The intensive nine-day programs provide wonderful results, and are great fun as well. Plus, family discounts make our program affordable for all the children in the family.
Sport and Recreation runs Swim and Survive classes in pools throughout regional NSW.
Our instructors are nationally qualified and screened for their suitability to work with children.
Prices for nine lessons are $70 for school-aged children and $50 for pre-schoolers (excludes pool entry fee).

This display will be complimented by 40 additional works presented by the Mildura Riverside Art Group, sculptures, collages and paintings from young aspiring artists from our local schools.
