When Rick Quinn bought some prop-
erty on Paso Robles’ east side in
1995 and planted a vineyard, he
simply wanted to make sure his home wine-making hobby always had a reliable source.
The vineyard, which normally supplied
him with Merlot grapes, came up short that
year, Quinn recalled, and he decided “that
won’t happen again.”
From that modest start sprouted Opolo,
one of Paso Robles’ most popular wineries
which has earned a reputation as a place to
taste superb wine and have a great time.
Opolo is owned by Quinn and Dave
Nichols, Quinn’s neighbor in Southern Cali-
fornia who bought vineyard property
adjoining Quinn’s on the east side of Paso
Robles. Together, they now own about 300
acres, including approximately 100 on the
west side of Paso Robles, where the hillside
winery and tasting room are located on a
picturesque country road.
The original business plan, drawn up by
the pair, envisioned growing grapes and
selling them to winemakers. They didn’t
intend to make wine commercially.
That changed as they saw more and more
acres planted to grapes.
Quinn joked that he “slept through my
econ classes in college,” but he still under-
stood supply and demand. With vineyardssprouting across the landscape, he decided
starting a winery would be a good “insurance
policy.”
Turned out to be something more than
that.
Opolo’s first vintage, 1999, sold out 1,000
cases in about three months, said Quinn. The
following year, 5,000 cases sold out in the
same time. Since then, Opolo has steadily
increased its annual production to approxi-
mately 40,000 cases.
“We didn’t know what to expect,” Nichols
recalled, “but we didn’t expect that.”
Quinn and Nichols share the winemaking
responsibilities along with consultant Robert
Nadeau. Their “winemaking by committee”
philosophy ensures quality year after year.
“Opolo is fun,” said Quinn. “We’re making
wine more user-friendly. People don’t need to
be intimidated. When people come through
the door, they have a great experience.”
Visitors to the warehouse-style tast
room quickly establish an easy rapport wi
whoever is pouring that day, whether it be o
of the winemakers, or a friendly employee.
While the winery’s production has stead
increased in the eight years since its firelease, Nichols said there are no immedia
plans to continue that kind of growth.
“We’re at the limit of what our facilities c
accommodate.”
Plus, he said, both men are determined
remain hands-on winemakers, controlling t
fruit source from vineyard to bottle.
“We’re the farmers,” said Nichols. “We
in control of the grapes.”
Opolo’s signature wines are a series of fu
bodied, fruit-forward Zinfandels made wi
fruit sourced from westside vineyards. Th
also produce a velvety, dessert-style La
Harvest Zinfandel that pairs well with choc
late.
“People really enjoy the style of wine th
we make,” acknowledged Nichols.
Curiosity mixed with a sense of adventu
motivates Opolo’s owners to produce mo
than two dozen types of wine, including a fe
unusual blends.

“We haven’t met a (varietal) grape we haven’t liked,” mused
Nichols.
Wine club members appreciate the novelty as well, he said.
“It makes it fun, because they’re not always getting the same thing
over and over again.”
Among the wines bottled by Opolo are a Spanish-Italian coupling
of Tempranillo and Nebbiolo and another blend featuring Sangiovese
and Barbera.
Opolo’s staples include “Fusion,” a blend that marries Syrah,
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and “Rhapsody,” a Maritage made
from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes
harvested from Opolo’s east side vineyards and Merlot and CabernetFranc fruit from the west side.
Don’t get the idea, however, that Opolo is a reds-only house.
Using grapes grown in the Santa Ynez Valley region of northern
Santa Barbara County, Quinn and Nichols make a Viognier and Rous-
sanne. Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay are also produced by the winery.
Special events at the winery are popular, thanks in part to the
relaxed atmosphere fostered there and also the scrumptious barbecued
meal typically served. With a nod to Quinn’s Serbian heritage, whole
roasted lamb, cooked over an open pit, is a mainstay. Alternatively,
guests can munch carne asada tacos and beans with all of the fixings.
Guests gather on a spacious plateau offering sweeping views of the
vineyards, along with walnut groves and coast live oaks in the
distance. With the right timing, you might also take in a spectacular
sunset.
Next on the calendar is Opolo’s Labor Day Weekend Barbecue, on
September 1 and 2. Lunch is $10 and wine tasting an additional $5.
Free to wine club members. No reservations are needed.
Opolo Winery is on Vineyard Drive, a shade less than five miles
north from Highway 46 West. The tasting room is open daily from 10
a.m. to 5 p.m. at 7110 Vineyard Drive. Call (805) 238-9593 for more

ON THE COVER WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK
When Doug and Nancy Beckett, a
couple of school teachers looking for
a better life, moved to Paso Robles in
1982 with their two sons, Joshua and Jacob,
they never new the life they would lead today.
The labels start came in 1988, thanks to a
load of Zinfandel grapes from Benito Dusi’s
vineyard. Though only amounting to a
couple hundred cases, the premiere release
centered the label’s reputation for premium
red wines.
Today, the Becketts brand has become
nationally distributed in 49 states and select
international destinations. This coming year
production is set for 84,000 cases, their
largest production yet. In order to secure
premium fruit, Peachy Canyon sourcesgrapes from over twenty local growers in the
Paso Robles AVA and 100 acres of their own
vineyards. The winery is still headed by
founding vintners Doug and Nancy, as well as
the family’s second generation. After years
away from home, both Josh and Jake
returned to Paso Robles and Peachy Canyon
to work for the family business. Josh has been
with the winery for nine years and has been
the winemaker since 2003. Combining his
varied experiences with different winemakers
and regions, Josh keeps an open mind in
order to create the most exciting wines
possible. Jake wasn’t able to resist the lure of
the family business either. For years, Jake
worked as the vineyard manager over-seeingthe four Peachy Canyon Vineyards and
working with local growers to ensure fruit
quality is kept at their high standard. In
2005, Jake wanted to learn other aspects of
the business and joined the sales team. Jake
now is the General Sales Manager and travels
the country promoting the family brand.
Although Zinfandels dominate the Peachy
Canyon tasting menu, you will find Caber-
nets, Merlots and special blends that are
available to sample. Each wine poses unique
characteristics with distinguished qualities
and is why the whole Peachy Canyon team
works so hard to pick only the best Paso
Robles fruit while supporting the local
growers. Doug Beckett also makes sure “each
wine is released in the peak of its youth,” the
Becketts feel they give their customers the
choice to either enjoy the wines young or
cellar them for a later date.

You are not likely to find the Black Monukka grape mentioned anywhere in a wine
book. That’s because it is a raisin grape seldom used to make wine. But the wine-
maker at Paso Robles’ historic Rotta Winery saw Sherry-style dessert wine potential in
the grape’s relatively high-fructose level and unique flavors. Unique as well, was their
vision to allow the intense Paso Robles sun to “bake” the wine as it ages for two years
in French oak barrels – outdoors! Slow evaporation of the wine, without refilling the
barrels, intensifying the wine’s richness. The end result is a true handcrafted wine of
unmatched smoothness, with distinctive caramel, nutty and vanilla flavors and
aromas. “We are the only producers of dessert Sherry in the U.S. to use this varietal,”
explains Barbara Milburn, Rotta Winery Tasting Room Manager. “It has won count-
less awards, including Double Gold, Best of Class, Gold and the Jefferson Cup.”
Taking the dessert Sherry wine to the next step is Chef Matthew Riley, who owns
two restaurants in Paso Robles. The original “Matthew’s” is located at the quaint and
stylish Paso Robles Regional Airport, while his second, opened in 2007, is conve-
niently situated in the heart of downtown. A California native, and beloved Paso
Robles resident, Chef Matthew knows grapes, both table and wine varieties, and
creates a simple yet impressionable dessert with the 2003 Rotta Black Monukka
Dessert Wine.
His creative recipe, Pave paired with Rotta Black Monukka, marries the sweet, nutty richness of the dessert wine with the sumptuousness of melted shaved choco-
late mixed with boiled cream and topped with figs.
Rotta Winery, founded in 1908, is the oldest originally family-owned winery in
San Luis Obispo County. The original vineyard and winery were started in 1856 by a
Frenchman named Adolph Siot, who later sold the successful enterprise to Joe Rotta
in 1908. Today, the Rotta label is being revived by one of their grandsons, Michael
Giubbini, who, in 1990, replanted the old family vineyard mostly to Zinfandel.
The Rotta tasting room is located in Templeton, open daily 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at
“Cider Creek” on Highway 46 West, just east of Vineyard Drive.

For small lot, boutique wineries that don’t have a tasting room, a
sales force or the ability to capture the attention of a major distributor,
there is another option to get their names and wines out in the market-place.
San Andreas West Wines calls itself “a boutique wine distributor,”
and can help a small winery with a range of services. Bill Bogue
founded the business in 2004, initially as a hobby to help his daughter
and son-in-law. It turned into a solid business venture as the number
of small wineries on the Central Coast grew over the past few years,
and he saw the special needs of fine, boutique wineries going unmet.
Bogue enlisted his three daughters to form the core of the business.
Tracy brought nine years of tasting room management experience to
her role as director of sales; Kimber, a web specialist with 20 years of
customer service experience, heads up the sales department; and
Robin, a graphics artist, has developed all the marketing materials, and
along with her husband Jim, provides logistics and assists in day-to-
day operations.
The firm currently represents nine wineries from the Santa Barbara,
Edna Valley and Paso Robles areas, including Cayucos Cellars,
Madison Cellars, Pozo Valley and William James Cellars. Their reach
extends to more than 100 wine shops and restaurants – also mostly on
the Central Coast – and they are looking for both new wineries to
represent, and new accounts to sell those wines.
Their proposition is simple: “We can go out and be your face in the
market,” Tracy explains. “Especially when it’s a mom-and-pop opera-
tion, it’s really difficult for them to even know who to talk to at one of the big, national distributors.”
San Andreas West’s goal is to simplify that process. They purchase
wines at the winery’s wholesale price, and re-sell it to retail and restau-
rant outlets with a mark-up that depends on factors such as volume
and price point.
In addition to picking up and distributing the wines, they can
represent the winery at pouring events, introduce the wines to publi-
cations such as Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast, and set up wi
tasting dinners, cross-marketing local restaurants and wineries.
“We’re out tooting their horn, and basically providing a service th
they either don’t want to do themselves, or don’t have the time to d
themselves,” Tracy says.Their target client generally produces less than 5,000 cases a ye
and often lacks a tasting room that provides a sales outlet for most
that production. Robin and her husband Jim Porter, owners
William James Cellars in Santa Maria, are typical clients. With produ
tion of 3,800 cases a year, they are too small to get attention from
large distributor, and yet produce too much to sell themselves witho
a tasting room. San Andreas West provides the feet on the street to g
their wines into restaurants and wine stores.
With an emphasis on personal service, the family intends to ke
the business intimate, but they are currently also looking to grow t
business. “Our goal is to grow the number of wineries we represe
and also to grow the accounts we sell to,” Tracy explains. They a
expecting to open a new office and warehouse facility in Santa Ma
in the very near future to accommodate that growth, and to provide
central meeting place for the family’s meetings.

Forty acres of strawberry fields, not vine-

picture window of the Costa de Oro
Winery’s tasting room. That’s no coincidence.
The tasting room is part of the Gold Coast

Costa de Oro’s award-winning wines.
There’s even a drive-through window for
purchasing strawberries.
“It’s definitely not your typical wine-tasting

Gold Coast Marketplace.
Gold Coast Marketplace, which opened a
year ago, is an attractive shop with exposed
wooden beams and earth tones exuding
warmth. A stone fruit’s throw from Highway

attracts both travelers just passing through
and wine enthusiasts launching a day of
tasting along the Foxen Canyon wine trail.
“We have everything you need for a day of

gourmet cheeses and artisan bread.
Gold Coast boasts fresh, locally grown

at farmers’ markets. Artichokes from Lompoc,
avocados from Santa Maria, roses from

1870s, the height of the Impressionist

tiny inn in Giverny, France, where the
Impressionism movement kicked into high

Enjoy paintings from some of today’s best
Impressionist painters, use the community

The Artiste story began with winemaker,Bion Rice, whose vision of becoming one of
the world’s finest cuvee wine producers led
him down the path that would eventually
bring the two worlds of art and wine together
like never before. Bion discovered his passion
for winemaking early on at his family’s
Sunstone Winery, where he honed his skills at
assemblage, the art of blending wines
together to yield distinctly complex cuvees of
balance, grace and power.
Now, with those skills as his tool belt and
California as his palette, Bion selects the
vintages and varietals that hold the nuances
and characteristics he needs to create his next
wine, each one a unique vision itself. Like an
Impressionist painter who uses individual,

If you’ve ever had the good fortune to visit a winery in Italy, you
know what it’s like to enjoy the combination of great wine, beautiful
scenery and most of all, warm and welcoming people. Now you don’t
have to endure a 12-hour plane flight to experience the delights of
Italy. Falcon Nest Winery is the creation of Francesco Grande and his
lovely wife, Carolynn. Francesco was born in Calabria and grew up in
the Tuscany region of Italy. Like so many of his fellow countrymen, his
passion for food and wine has been the focus of his life.
For twenty-eight years he ran a successful and very, very busy
restaurant in Los Angeles. It took a long-time friend and customer to
convince him that he needed a little vacation. A trip up to the Paso
Robles wine-growing region was just supposed to provide a little rest
and relaxation. But with only one look at the stunningly beautiful
rolling hills of Central California, Francesco knew that it was time for
a new challenge. It was time to return to his roots.
“Wine has been in my family for centuries. My father was a wine-maker, my grandfather was a winemaker as was his father before him
and his father before him! In Italy, it is a way of life,” says Francesco.
With the gusto he gave to his cooking, Francesco has turned his
land into some of the finest vineyards in the area. His picturesque little
winery on the top of the hill looks over a seemingly endless sea of
vines. He now has fifty-five acres planted in Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah,
Petite Verdot and Zinfandel.
“I love the art of cooking, but once the food is on the table, it
soon gone. There is an art to winemaking as well plus it lasts a l
longer. With aging wine becomes better. Food becomes worse!” sa
Francesco.
Francesco has not totally hung up his chef’s apron, though. Th
tasting room offers an array of his handmade sauces and Italia
specialties. Guests are often treated to tasty morsels along side the fi
wines of Falcon Nest.
Falcon’s Nest Winery is located on Union Road in Paso Robles. Th
tasting room is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. For more info
mation, call (805) 226-0227 or go to www.falconnestwine.com.

even more unique: every label is a work of art
in and of itself. Artiste works with some of the
finest Impressionist artists across the country
to commission a painting for every newcuvee, and each wine then takes on the name
of the masterpiece that graces its bottle. In the
end, it’s the ultimate synthesis of art and wine:
a liquid work of art created by a master wine-
maker within the bottle, and a painted work
of art created by a master painter without.
Every quarter, Artiste releases new wines
featuring new paintings from the artists. Each
release opens with an Art & Wine Release
Party featuring delicious food paired with the
new wines and the entire tasting studio filledwith new artwork for the show, along with a
visit from the featured artist to talk about
their work and autograph bottles for
customers. Throughout the year, Artiste also
holds special events such as blending sessionswith the winemaker and painting seminars
with the resident artist, Christina LoCascio.

Cellar Door has announced the launch of Hayman & Hill Inter-
change, a new white blend from Santa Barbara County. Interchange
represents the natural flow between nature’s elements and the art of
winemaking. The 2006 Interchange features a blend of aromatic whitevarietals from Santa Barbara County’s diverse landscape, and is the
latest in Hayman & Hill’s venture to create single-appellation wines
produced from California’s top winegrowing regions.
“Interchange symbolizes many things,” said Rebecca Stead,
Marketing Manager for Cellar Door wines. “It is the winemaker’s
careful hand over the winemaking journey; the cooling flow of mild
coastal breezes through hillside vineyards; the subtle hint of pineapple
aromas in the glass from distinct parcels of land. Interchange discovers
what’s new on the horizon, which in this case, is the magnificent Santa
Barbara County.”
“Our aim is to produce wines that are authentic expressions of
their varietal type from the appellations we love best,” said DavidHayman, Hayman & Hill Winemaker. “They hit a sweet spot at
$13.99 and deliver top quality. For Interchange, we traveled off the
beaten track, and found just what we were looking for in the diverse
terrain of Santa Barbara County. We set our sights on a white blend
that packs a punch of intense fruit with effortless balance and
finesse. A lick of oak and careful barrel fermentation delivers a
distinctly rich, yet refreshing palette.”
Expressive of its appellation, Interchange is a luscious, rich blen
of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat, Malvasia Bianca, Semillo
and Gewürztraminer grapes. This latest addition to Hayman & Hilappellation-specific line-up has a bright floral nose and a luscio
tropical palate with bright acidity.
Interchange will be distributed nationally with a suggested ret
price of $13.99. The Hayman & Hill winemaking philosophy
simply to seek out the finest quality grapes where they grow best.
