In the compilation of this guide, there was a resounding number of bursaries for studies in engineering.
However, students must not be dissuaded by the amount of bursaries there are for studies in
engineering. Students need to make a concerted effort in ensuring that they research many other
possible companies for bursaries in their field of interest.
“-“ or “?” indicate that the option is not offered or that the information was not available before going to

Bursaries and Bursary Applications ExplainedMoney worries can often be a problem once you've decided on your study path. This section explores
more information on what a bursary is, as well as tips on how to apply.
A bursary is financial support towards your studies, which is awarded to students based on a
combination of academic achievements and financial need. While a bursary does not need to be paid
back directly in money, students are usually required to work for the company or organisation for a set
amount of time following graduation as a form of “pay back”.
Bursaries are usually awarded by a company, organisation or institution for study in a particular field.
Some bursaries cover students for only a year, while others last for the whole length of their studies. In
order to keep the bursary, you will need to keep your academic achievement high. Bursaries also differ
in terms of what they will cover. Some cover just the cost of your tuition, while others provide for living
costs and books, as well as other expenses.
In order to apply for a bursary you need to have high school marks (at least 60% or higher), and the
required subjects. Each bursary is different, so make sure you check their requirements. Even though
some organisations will offer bursaries based on financial need, they will also consider your academic
progress. You will need to apply to and be accepted at an institution, and in some cases, you will
require South African citizenship.
So, how do you go about applying for a bursary? Take a look at the bursary application process
diagram on the next page to get started.

and studies.
• Common documents that are required are:
◦ Photocopy of ID
◦ Academic records for Grade 11 and/or 12
◦ Passport photograph
6) Complete and Send in your Application
• Complete all the areas of the application form carefully. You might want to prepare your
answers on a separate piece of paper before copying them onto the form.
• Provide exactly the required documentation (nothing less, nothing more).
• If there is no space for a motivation, then you can provide a motivational letter (see example at
the end of this brochure).
• Post or e-mail your application to the correct address (or complete it online) well ahead of time,
and remember to also provide your correct contact details as requested.
• Keep a copy of your application form as you might be asked about it at your interview. If you fill
your form out online, then print out a copy.
7) Apply for a Number of Bursaries
• Competition for bursaries is tough, and thousands of people apply. Therefore, apply for a
number of bursaries to increase your chances.
8) Apply to University
• Applying for a bursary is a separate process to applying for a bursary.
• Apply to a few universities before their closing deadlines, as competition for places is tough.
101
Bursary Information Pack distributed by Sci-Bono
• The degree that you are applying for a bursary to study, should be the same as the degree you
have applied for at University.
9) Shortlisting and Acceptance
• While it is reasonable to check if your application has been received, it is best to wait patiently
for news on the bursary.
• Applications will be shortlisted to a few candidates, and you might be invited for an interview or
an aptitude test.
• If you are successful, then conditional acceptance (based on your final marks) will be granted.
• After you've matriculated, send through a certified copy of your final grade 12 marks, to prove
that you have achieved the final results.
• You will then get a Bursary Confirmation Letter to register at their approved institution. Before
signing the bursary contract, please take time to read and understand the terms and conditions
as most of them are binding.
10) No bursary? Look at Alternative Options
• Many companies simply do not respond if you don't receive a bursary.
• If you do not get a bursary, consider applying for a NSFAS loan (explained in this brochure), or
explore the other funding options available to you. Remember that you may be able to apply for
certain bursaries once you have passed a year of university.

RE: APPLICATION FOR A BURSARY – MINING ENGINEERING
Dear Sir/Madam
I am a grade 12 learner at Kwadengeza Secondary School and would like to pursue a career in Mining Engineering. I have already applied for admission at several universities such as University of Johannesburg, Wits, Pretoria and Cape Town and am awaiting confirmation of provisional acceptance from them. I obtained the following results in the first term of matric / grade 11:
ENGLISH 67%MATHEMATICS 80%PHYSICAL SCIENCE 61%LIFE SCIENCES 65%GEOGRAPHY 63%AFRIKAANS 72%LIFE ORIENTATION 65%
The reason I have chosen to be a Mining Engineer is because I am highly numerate, curious about how things work, very analytical and critical in my approach to situations. I relate well to people and have above average communication skills. I am also creative and able to organize, as well as delegate tasks in order to achieve results through others. My election to the position of head boy in the previous academic year, as well as my results, all attest to these abilities and skills.
I am drawn to the Mining Engineering profession first, because of the enormous career opportunities South Africa has to offer, but also the contribution I believe I can make towards the betterment of myself, family, community as well as the country as a whole. I am confident that I have the potential to develop into an astute mining engineer one day.
I note that BHP Billiton is a renowned and world class mining resources company, placing it at the cutting edge of mining resources technology. I believe that I have a contribution to make towards this phenomenal success.
I shall appreciate it if you could forward me a bursary application form as soon as possible.OR (Select the appropriate type of ending for your letter)I would appreciate it if you would consider me for a bursary to study towards a career in engineering.
Yours faithfully

Other Finance OptionsIf a bursary doesn't work out for you, what are your other options? This section explains the different
types of funding available to students.
1. ScholarshipsA scholarship refers to money that is given towards a student's tuition based on academic excellence,
and that does not need to be repaid. Scholarships are a reward for outstanding academic
achievement, and competition is tough, as only a few are offered. The sum of money that is granted
differs for each scholarship. Some scholarships provide a set amount, or pay for extras, or only for
tuition.
2. LoansA student loan refers to an amount of money that you borrow from a bank or other institution in order to
pay for your studies. The amount of the loan has to be paid back, either starting immediately, or at a
later date (for most student loans). Interest is a charged on loans, and is a percentage of the amount
you have borrowed.
The major banks in South Africa provide specially designed student loans to assist students in paying
for their studies. For full-time students, loans can be payed back once you have graduated. For part-
time students, you need to start repaying your loan immediately. For a bank loan you need a “surety”,
which is someone who can pay back the money if you are unable to once you have finished studying.
Your surety needs to be in regular employment, and have enough income to be able to pay back your
loan, should it be needed.
EduLoan also provides loans that are less restrictive about your surety than a bank, but which require
the person who applied for the loan to start paying the loan back immediately. EduLoan will only lend
you an amount of money that you can afford, and therefore they may not cover all of your study
finances.
3. NSFAS Loans/Financial AidNSFAS loans (also known as “financial aid” at many institutions) are government-funded, low interest
loans which are paid back once the student is working. NSFAS loans are only available for needy
students, whose family earns less than a certain amount. A portion of an NSFAS loan can be
converted into a bursary, which does not then need to be repaid, depending on academic progress. A
100% pass rate would result in a 40% decrease on the amount that needs to be paid back.
All NSFAS applications must be made at your institution, after you have registered and covered your
registration cost. Applications are quite complicated, and must be completed carefully, including
certified copies (you can get this done at a bank, post office or at your educational institution) of all the
necessary documents.
For students who are unable to get a bursary, taking an NSFAS loan at first, and applying for a bursary

after you have passed your first year at university may be a suitable option. Many companies prefer to
award bursaries at students who are performing well at university, rather than students fresh from
matric.
To find out more about NSFAS administered funds, send an SMS query to 32261, visit
www.nsfas.org.za, visit their offices, or send an email to [email protected]
4. Self-funding OptionsIf your parents or you are able to fund your studies, then this is a good route to choose. Other
alternatives include studying via distance education while working, studying part-time, working to save
before you begin your studies, or getting involved in learnerships.
